Splatoon |OT| Squidstyler

Just came across this on my tumblr feed. I thought the updates would be weekly. These people are fast!

AFAIK, they never announced any fixed schedule. The Splatoon Direct for NoE said that new maps would appear "every few weeks", but I think that's the most specific statement.

In the recent NintendoLife interview with producer Hisashi Nogami, he said:
"We'll be adding more stages and weapons as we see how the community matures. We'll also do something similar with further game modes too."

Has it been confirmed anywhere that the majority if not all of the content that they will be doling out over the summer is on disk?

I think, if so, it is an interesting approach to growing an online shooter.

I know some people are upset that they don't have instant access to it all, but by going this route Nintendo can ensure the community grows along with the game and I bet they have all the releases tied to community milestones.

This also allows them the room to make sure the actual dlc that comes in August is completely finished and working great and that the community is totally ready for it.

I think it's an interesting balance to strike and the discussion may be new thread worthy but I can't find a resource that straight says all of this is on disk and we are just getting server side unlocks

A good number of the upcoming multiplayer maps are already in single player. So it's more than likely almost everything in the near term is on disk.

Well I'm sure it's already done and the maps are too. They are just releasing them weekly.

I'm looking forward to trying it out. Hope they release a new map next week.

it's really interesting. they seem really focused on ensuring that the community has a solid knowledge base of the mechanics and maps before adding in more technical content. the one thing I noticed is from the camp map where the grates on the floor are directly above water. most of the grates in the game now are above solid ground (except for a couple on arowana mall iirc) so if you squid over them you'll just fall through and land on solid ground. soon everyone will be tested on their understanding of that because if you squid over grates on the camp map you're going to fall into the water below and die.

I also noticed how when they released port mackerel it showed up in pretty much every turf wars rotation for an entire day while being absent from every splat zones rotation. so when it finally did show up in splat zones most people playing probably had a good grip on that map and how to approach it.

everything they're doing with this game seems to be calculated and it's quite interesting to watch it play out.

unfortunately I think a thread on the matter wouldn't go too well for obvious reasons

Has Nintendo said anything about the online issues people have been experiencing? It has made what should be a very enjoyable game quite frustrating.

I think some of it will be new. Iirc there's more than 4 DLC maps in the direct but the strategy guide only knew of four of them.

I don't think all of the maps are done. I think the first 4 maps (the ones shown in the guide) are the ones that are done completely. We've seen some in pre-release promotion and some in the single player as well.

I think the weapons are done for the most part though. I think we know about 8-9 (not sure about the exact number) weapons.

Been working excellent for me. I have had maybe 4 disconnects since launch and I played this everyday so far.

Might be your router?

got my LAN adapter today but can't access the router settings for stupid reasons. Well I hope I'll see at least a slight improvement

If you are hardlined in then you don't need to fiddle with the router settings.

I'd be happy with even just "Attack" and "Defend" D-pad commands.

"Nice" and "Booyah" really don't add much...

Attack and defend doesn't add anything either really. Pressing defend means what? everyone? one teammate? defend what?

Attack is what exactly? shouldn't you be always attacking?

"Nice" shows your team mates it is safe to super jump to them. There is a ring around you that everyone can see. That is why you should be cautious super jumping. I always press up on the d-pad when I am clear.

It's an interesting way of doing it and I feel like it's indeed working as planned...but the vast majority of people won't see it this way. At all.

There's going to be an angry thread sooner or later and everyone can join in on shitting on Nintendo and the game for going this route with their content pushes.

And I guess that's completely understandable.

Just added a bunch of you from the google doc!

On a seperate note, hows the custom blaster. Just saw some guy destroying people with it in ranked mode.

I love the blaster. I prefer the vanilla version because I love having the disruptor bombs and the killer wail is crucial for splat zones.

There's also the possibility that not all the content on disk has been properly QA tested. Splatoon seems like it was rushed out the gate to have something in what would otherwise be a summer drought. Staggered server unlocks like this might give them a buffer to make sure everything's working as it needs to.

But I can't really back that up with anything, just speculating.

Inkbrush coming out today? Awesome!

Now where's Camp Triggerfish.

I think all the maps are done but they are piecemealing it to us honestly.

A different strategy but it seems to be working. Splatoon is constantly in the news now.

We get excited every week over Splatoon also.

I have played lots and lots of matches (35+ hours total now, most of it in multiplayer) and haven't encountered any real issues, other than occasional problems to connect to a lobby. But once I'm in a lobby everything works really great. I'd say it works at least as good as MK8 online. I'm on a wired connection.

Does Smash and MK8 work well for you online?

Was an update actually downloaded for the port? or was it on disc?

The servers are totally fine :)

That's just 6 DC :lol

I think the 4 in the Guide are On-Disc since Camp has been seen ALOT and the other 2 are in the SP Mode.

The other 5 are probably downloads.

On-Disc

Not sure how old this is, but it could be useful: https://www.reddit.com/r/splatoon/comments/37yef4/i_made_a_page_that_counts_down_to_the_next_map/

He created a countdown for Stages rotation and it shows what times the stages will switch in your timezone as well.

really? I thought port mackerel came out of nowhere. I didn't know about it until it released and I've been following the game pretty well..
I don't think anyone on GAF could have followed the game as closely as I did lol. :p

The stages icon was shown in pre-release material. I would link a post that has it prior to Port Mackeral's release, but it seems they're removed. The closes thing I can find is this: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=163515820&postcount=6724

That post has pics from the SquidBoards thread where people mistakenly thought Kelp Dome was the same map as Port Mackeral.

well I just did a speedtest again and I get 5.3 Mbps download speed and 0.4 Mbps upload speed which is well below the average in my country. It seems my main issue is that the connection at this place hasn't been upgraded in years. Guess I gotta do something about that now

I accidentally said this in the sales thread, I meant to post it here instead. But someone brought up the fact that content being released was already on disc.

It's strange, normally it would bug me that content on the disc is locked behind future release dates. But I actually kind of love how Splatoon rolls the content out. First off, the gameplay is incredible. Even with the small amount of maps, I never get bored. Unlike other shooters, I feel like every match is this experience. I can't explain it. So that they are rolling out content, it's like deliberate pacing in a film. It's made me more excited for new content. Like, I feel like if everything was available on disc at once, I wouldn't be as excited. The way they are rolling content out like weekly updates, it feels like an evolving service.

I guess I'm probably spitting hyperbole. But I stand by the fact that, I haven't felt this way about an online MP since Modern Warfare.

How do you guys feel about future content already being on disc?
