Splatoon |OT| Squidstyler

I accidentally said this in the sales thread, I meant to post it here instead. But someone brought up the fact that content being released was already on disc.

It's strange, normally it would bug me that content on the disc is locked behind future release dates. But I actually kind of love how Splatoon rolls the content out. First off, the gameplay is incredible. Even with the small amount of maps, I never get bored. Unlike other shooters, I feel like every match is this experience. I can't explain it. So that they are rolling out content, it's like deliberate pacing in a film. It's made me more excited for new content. Like, I feel like if everything was available on disc at once, I wouldn't be as excited. The way they are rolling content out like weekly updates, it feels like an evolving service.

I guess I'm probably spitting hyperbole. But I stand by the fact that, I haven't felt this way about an online MP since Modern Warfare.

How do you guys feel about future content already being on disc?

I think it's similar to how people are asking to choose the own maps they want to play. They think that increases the amount of maps they will get to play, but in reality it would most likely decrease it significantly. Instead of learning more complicated maps, most people would be more likely just to dismiss it altogether.

People don't like to be told that being given less choice is good.

I forgot about Camp Triggerfish. That stage looks great.

Also future content on the disc doesn't bother me, since it is all free content.

What main abilities are everyone using? I've got main ink saver, swim speed, and ink recovery. Honestly I don't see how the other abilities are better.

When you buy content, you expect to have full access and control to all of it. I guess. But I'm open to the idea, that a game and the content on the disc, can be curated to us. Like from pacing and balance perspective. Maybe I'm just crazy though. So far I've liked how the game has done map rotation and content release.

Has it been confirmed anywhere that the majority if not all of the content that they will be doling out over the summer is on disk?

I think, if so, it is an interesting approach to growing an online shooter.

I think it's an interesting balance to strike and the discussion may be new thread worthy but I can't find a resource that straight says all of this is on disk and we are just getting server side unlocks
I think this is definitely thread worthy.

The real question, beyond the gameplay reasons given by the producer in my quote below, is: will this commercial driven bet pay off?

Of course, Splatoon with full content at launch would have scored even better. In a market that is quite metacritic oriented, it would have earned Splatoon more sales.

On the other hand, making the news each week, for the next 12 weeks, with new content available for the game... will grow user base satisfaction, make sure the community keeps playing the game, create the buzz in a longer period of time.

Correct me if I'm wrong: by August Splatoon will have 14 maps, 80 weapons, dozens of perks. That's a lot of content for a game which relies on excellent gameplay mechanics. People will progressively realize this, over a quarter period.

This tactical approach is original and risky, but it could pay off big time. It's as smart as this game. Don't you think?

Can you explain the reasoning for gradually rolling out additional stages, items and modes in the months after release?
There are two reasons for this:
First, we put a lot of effort into every inch of the online stages, so by playing them over and over again users can get a better feel for the terrain, giving the gameplay more breadth and depth. The characteristics of the weapons and the strategies for using them vary with each weapon, and of course these will vary depending on the stage you use them in and even what combination of equipment your teammates and opponents are using. We want users to enjoy each and every single piece of content we've prepared, so rather than provide a lot at once, we're going to be adding them a little at a time.
Second, is that while we've paid a lot of attention to the balancing the game, the flip-side of this is that we feel the game needs weapons with a lot of variety as well as stages with complex layouts to really expand the gameplay.
The problem there is that these can sometimes disrupt the overall balance of the game.
The real fun of Splatoon comes when players are comfortable with the game, and are able to play to their full potential with other players they meet in the online matches.
We'll be adding more stages and weapons as we see how the community matures. We'll also do something similar with further game modes too.

I really enjoy it. it makes Splatoon feel like an evolving thing. every time I boot up Splatoon there's a feeling of anticipation and I really enjoy that aspect. I can't really explain it but I also like the map rotation. it's like cable tv, you turn it on and see if something is on that you like. arowana mall in ranked mode? well fuck that I'll play turf wars instead. it's kind of like how I prefer watching Seinfeld on tv rather than the dvd sets because I don't like choosing which episodes to watch. if I did that I'd watch the same ones over and over and neglect lots of later stuff. it's weird and I can't really verbalize why I like it so much but I'd imagine someone familiar with the Animal Crossing series would be better at articulating these points.

You're not going to get a legitimate discussion here. I'd post a new thread if you actually want to talk about it.

The complaint most people usually have about on-disc content is because it's being sold as DLC. The concept of having to pay for something that they already ostensibly possess is just infuriating to many.

However even that kind of on disc content doesn't bother me. I understand that games are designed with a certain budget in mind, and DLC is designed with another budget. You finish making a game and that content goes gold and is ready for shipping, but you can't always ship immediately, and in any case a lot of teams are working on different things anyway. If the DLC team gets some DLC done early, putting it on the disc doesn't entitle you to owning it. They're just saving you a download, that's all.

So especially when the DLC is free and just part of a cool scheduled rollout like this, that's really neat. It's basically like the Layton puzzles, one free extra puzzle a day, a reason to keep coming back to the game.

There's also the possibility that not all the content on disk has been properly QA tested. Splatoon seems like it was rushed out the gate to have something in what would otherwise be a summer drought. Staggered server unlocks like this might give them a buffer to make sure everything's working as it needs to.

But I can't really back that up with anything, just speculating.

Have there been any articles or stories that point towards this being true?

At the moment I have: Ink Resistance Up, Ninja Squid, and one that buffs some stats during the last 30 seconds at the game.

I'll probably change out that last one at least. Need to grind more clothing first.

I've thought the answers so far have been very thoughtful. That said, I apologize if this thread isn't for that kind of discussion. It won't happen again. I'll just stick to posting game stats etc.

Going to work on my ranked game today. Still stuck at C rank :/ Hoping my switch to Splattershot Jr. can improve my games in rank.

Been working excellent for me. I have had maybe 4 disconnects since launch and I played this everyday so far.

Might be your router?
Haven't had any issues at all. Might be your router? What are the issues?

Tons of disconnects, usually towards the end of matches and sometimes right when the matches begin. Have also experienced issues with queuing up and it taking entirely too long to fill up the number of needed players for the match to begin. I hate that you cannot back out of the matchmaking screen when this happens. And I have also had the connection cut out when just sitting at the main menu screen.

I have tried this both wired into my AT&T U-Verse modem/router and also wireless using a NetGear Nighthawk router (which is fantastic for gaming and puts out a strong signal. I used it for my consoles before I had my gaming room wired up) and it makes no difference.

I do not believe this is an issue with my setup as this is the only game that I am experiencing connection problems with. That said, this has been the only Wii U game that I've tried playing online-- I usually play online on PC, Vita, PS3, and PS4.

I have played lots and lots of matches (35+ hours total now, most of it in multiplayer) and haven't encountered any real issues, other than occasional problems to connect to a lobby. But once I'm in a lobby everything works really great. I'd say it works at least as good as MK8 online. I'm on a wired connection.

Does Smash and MK8 work well for you online?

Haven't had any problems with Smash and MK8 in the past, however I have yet to try them online at my new place. Again, however, I have had no problems with other consoles/PCs/mobile devices and the connection I have now is three times faster than what I had at my old place. Also when online using the Wii U in general I haven't had any problems with the connection cutting out. It's only happening within Splatoon.

Yeah, I remember college LAN Halo where everyone only ever played Blood Gulch, Hang Em High, and Damnation. Someone would convince us to try something different, cue a lot of bitching, and then it was back to Gulch. In practice we played less maps than Splatoon has!

Splatoon is forcing everyone to expand their skillset to include all these different maps and it's great.

opening gambit, ninja squid, and ink resistance up

although I'm leveling up a piece of swim speed gear right now instead of ninja squid

I've yet to see Ninja squid although my girlfriend who just started playing the other evening got Ninja Squid right away. I've got a lot of ink saver's. I like having the fast movement in ink along with the defense up. I try to get a build more for speed. Cover walls, dive in to ink, get the hell out of the way.

Main ink saver. Defense. Damage up. Special saver and the one that speeds up the meter for specials.

I have some speed run abilities, but it's due to a bad roll. Do you guys know if stats stack? Is there a point having defense ability three times spread out across various clothes? Or is there a cap for stats?

Noticed that Run Speed agility increases your walk speed while charging. Nice.

Ink Saver (Main), Damage Up, and Ink Resistance right now. Trying to find a cool hat with damage up or ink saver (main), but they almost all look bad

if octos and squids all got along

they'd probably ink me down by the end of this song

seem like the whole city go against me

every time I'm in the ink I hear

SPLAT! SPLAT! SPLAT! SPLAT!

I'm so glad for GAF allowing me to express the dorkiest side of myself and joining in from time to time. :lol

By the way, imagine the adorable sounds Inklings make when splatted for each of those splats in the hook and tell me it doesn't bring a grin to your face.

Honestly I still care more about looks than the abilities. I'm still using the tinted shades even though the abilities kind of suck.

That said, Recon is my main body's ability and it's pretty useful. Debating about choosing between it and ninja squid though

ain't nothin' but an inkopolis thang

Nothing other than the usual comments about how little content is actually available at launch and the really empty release calendar for the next few months. There's also the other possibility where this is all intentional and they really are pushing games as a service with Splatoon, and the staggered releases are just a way of keeping interest up as they build additional content.

Until we get more information or a postmortem all we can do is speculate but it really doesn't hinder my enjoyment of the game either way. If it really is just a result of a rushed release I don't think that's a problem at all.

Been in a ton of lagging games lately where I can't see my own ink being laid down, and japanese players get the latency bonus of teleportation and temporary invincibility. Can I at least hope that somewhere across the pacific, there is a corresponding player cursing my name for the same reasons in these games?

Or is this all one sided, depending on the locations of the majority of people in the game?

Abilities stack, but may be subject to diminishing returns. There are guys on reddit and squidboards compiling data on how much different combinations abilities increase performance (at least for the things that are testable). Also, it looks like in general having an ability in the main slot gives a much much bigger stat boost than one in the sub slot.

Winning is temporary, but looking cool is forever.

Are sub abilities worth less than main abilities?

Regardless, I found that with two ink saver main subs, you can go from 5 full speed charge shots with the base charger to 6. With one, you get 3/4s of the way through the 6th charge and then slow down.

Thanks for the tip, I'll check that out. Honestly, for me, I've kind of just rolled slot abilities and hope I get ones I like. But so far I've mainly rocked clothes that had defense, damage, and special stats. But on some clothes I got 3 defense rolls and had no idea if they actually stack or not.

Glad there are fans compiling data. Can't wait to see what people argue the best ability set up is. In my head, defense and damage made the most sense for me.

Tenacity, Ninja Squid, and Ninja Jump.

I realize that in order to both perform and look ballin' as fuck, I gotta make a bunch of sets. I want a "ninja" set that is this with a bunch of complimentary ink savers (main & sub), swim speed up, special charge up, run speed up & bomb toss up. After seeing my brother use the Splattershot custom for some DISGUSTING hunting and assassination tactics, I'm thinking of making this the defacto build with some Aerospray MG here and there depending on my mood.

I also want to create an "athletic" build that is basically just buffed stats all around with no particular theme.

Me too, but since you can reroll abilities, it is possible to have the best look you want and the abilities as well.

Is Splat now the equivalent of Fuck? Is this the Smurfs?

"Imma Spalt you so hard gurl..."
"MotherSplatter"

lmao I'll make it so!
and fail miserably because it won't catch on

I feel there will be a number of 4v4 inkbrush games in Turf Wars tonight haha. Glad I didn't purchase that Dynamo Roller last night..

Me too, but since you can reroll abilities, it is possible to have the best look you want and the abilities as well.

Nope. You can't reroll the primary ability, and for some abilities there are precious few pieces of gear that have them, especially the exclusives like ninja squid.

Me too, but since you can reroll abilities, it is possible to have the best look you want and the abilities as well.

You can add slots. So if you really have clothes you think look great, you can spend the money with Spike and get the look you want and also have more slots for abilities on them.

About to pick this up, any tips for just starting? And is it a good idea to get through the single player campaign first?

Walls don't count for points. Only paint walls for traversing. Only the floors count for points. Be aggressive, don't be afraid to push hard and go into enemy territory (at the same time, have map awareness and make sure the enemy team isn't pushing hard into your territory and undoing everything your team has done. All it takes is one person left unchecked to ruin your lead). Learn how to aggressively swim in ink and pop in and out. Both to attack and hide or escape?

Also don't get frustrated. You will encounter people with weapons you think are frustrating. Your have to get to level 4 before you can try out new weapons. It doesn't take that long, and things get much easier once you get access to weapons and can figure out your play style.
