Earthbound Beginnings |OT| From Onett to Podunk in 20 years!

I have a reproduction cart of this for NES, but bought it on principle. I always said I wished I could pay for a legit version of this game and NOA finally delivered.

Same here. Really cool to have a cart version (in English) but I also bought the VC version for support.

Bought. And I left a free space next to Earthbound on the Wii U menu :|

This game is so slow I needed to speed it up via emulation to make it bearable. Walking speed, text speed and too many confirmation dialogs, slow battles, it was all fucking glacial. Has that been addressed?

Address ? this is a direct port of the translation made 25 years ago.... no nothing was address. They probably let the Run button like they implement in the Us version. Other then that still the same game.

You can run in the game and you can speed up the text.

So good to finally be able to play this legit. Saved Pippi last night and worked my way over to the canary village. Do I have to clear the zoo to give back the canary chick?

I'm tempted to buy this just to show support for Mother 3

Do iiiiiiit!!

But it's also a good game on its own merits. Aside from the obvious pitfalls NES RPGs tended to fall into like grinding and overly-labyrinthine map design, the atmosphere and music of Mother are really evocative. There's this general unique, melancholy tone that's honestly more in line with 3 than 2, and even though it's not the most accurate translation the Sandhop script is really very charming and even poetic at times. It's a game I feel every Mother fan should at least try.

I think the emptiness of the world, the large mazelike areas contribute to the melancholy. No enemies running around, just a kid wandering graveyards and caves on his own.

And yeah I just love the soundtrack. I consider it better than Earthbound.

Pollyanna
Bein' Friends
Eight Melodies
Snowman

When I played Melee back in the day, I hadn't played Earthbound before it except for a short time, so I assumed the Melee music was from Earthbound. I didn't find out the truth until much later. Onett's actual theme is disappointing next to Pollyanna and Bein' Friends.

So from the sounds of it, this is one of those RPGs where it's more lengthy because of the grinding you have to do?

Also sadly reminded I'm not very far into Earthbound.

Still can't believe that this actually happened...

Yes, it's a lot more grindy than Earthbound. Definitely worth playing though. The story is awesome and the
final showdown with Giegue
is creepy and great.

I love how
the attacks he makes are just completely inexplicable, like this being is godlike and you can't even comprehend what is happening. Really bridges that horror game feeling mixed with childhood nostalgia that the whole series always nails.

Literally, this is how they're described. All while he talks about Ninten's family and shit.

Mother is way more of a grind. It has more specific overwhelming moments when it comes to enemy difficulty and brutality than Earthbound.

Yikes. I remember the earlier moments of Earthbound was a bit brutal because you only had one party member (like the first boss & having do FIVE FIGHTS IN A ROW at the police station).

Oh well, this might make for a good summer & "zone-out" RPG since I'm the type that tries to fight all enemies that I can because I want to feel prepared for future fights in upcoming locations.

In Mother there's a PSI ability called 4th-D Slip. It's basically a more guaranteed method of "running away" from battle.

For the last third of the game, this is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL and that's on top of grinding.

All of this said, I was still able to finish the game. Can't be said for...any other NES RPG.

Anyone else experiencing some serious input lag when playing on the Gamepad? I've had it sometimes with other VC games, but nowhere near as bad as this one.

Yes almost a half second delay. Depending on where I am. Need to hold the d pad to turn sometimes. I think that's just the game though

It's not exactly a technical marvel even when you're playing it on original hardware.

Yeah, you NEED to grind in Mother. Was it Mother or Mother 2 where the final area of the game wasn't play-tested because of time constraints (which resulted in SIGNIFICANTLY harder enemies as a result)? It's been a while since I beat Mother 2, but I do remember the final area being rough...So I can't ever remember.

Did they sensor naked Ninten in this release?

I believe it was Mother 1. I remember reading an interview about it or something.

There are lots of really great articles floating around out there that document all the changes made for the US release of Mother as seen on the prototype. The US release is actually superior in a lot of ways to the Famicom original, with an expanded ending, the run button addition, easier access to the map, and other little tweaks along the way.

They definitely did for Earthbound. Can't recall if they had to for E0.

Thinking back, Mother is the only NES JRPG I've ever beaten, unless you count LoZ. It may be brutal, but I feel like it's easier than most NES ones. I'd have had a chance with DQ3 and 4, but I played the remakes of those.

IMO DQ3 and 4 are easier. They have better rhythm and require less outright grinding, and the grinding itself is more fun. Mother is akin to Dragon Quest 2, maybe a little worse in some ways. Certainly lacking in terms of equipment.

As far as we should be concerned, it is as dated as DQ1/2.

still don't get why they wouldn't release this 3DS too. I mean I am going to get it on my Wii U, but I play my 3DS a whole lot more due to the portability and would've loved to play it on that.

For what it's worth/I'm part of the problem, if this ever comes to 3DS, I'm definitely double-dipping (really, triple-dipping, considering I already bought Mother 1&2 for GBA)

I JUST WANT TO TAKE PIPPI BACK HOME LET ME OUT OF THIS CEMETERY.

I swear, these random encounters are the worst ever. You can't take two steps without four bats showing up.

I just got through that part. I did some level grinding to get to level 6 and bought the wooden bat. These are the kinds of RPGs I grew up with and I actually welcome the high encounter rate. I guess reliving those NES days is why I'm so interested in this overall. IDK maybe I'm just being weird. Playing this game makes me wish Dragon Warrior I - IV would be released on the NES VC as well.

I finally got out of the cemetery with Pippi, but good god that encounter rate.
Glad this came out at a point where I was craving genuinely any single player game I could get my hands on. Also I noticed that the run button just doubles the speed of the game.

Haha, yeah, the run button is kinda hackily implemented.

Never realized just how much I'd miss being able to see enemies on the overworld. I don't even mind it being grindy compared to the smooth difficulty curve of its sequel; I just wish it didn't take a minute at a time to move halfway across the screen.

Bought it last night and played for about 40 minutes or so and got my ass kicked! Love it! The humor is so good in the game and I can't wait to play it again tonight while I hopefully am downloading Mother 3 from the Wii U shop. Definitely a departure from the SNES game but a lot of the charm is still evident here.
