Bungie defends Destiny: The Taken King's £/$40 price tag (Eurogamer)

I'm fine with the value proposition for TTK as long as the strikes/missions/whatever that are set in existing planets are in new areas. They stretched the current geography of the game way too thin at this point. I really don't want to play through the same levels backwards yet again. I know we're going to fight Oryx or whatever but that's no excuse to have to trek through the Shrine of Oryx for yet another mission.

The game needs new areas within its existing, established planets more than it needs all-new planets.

I've not played Destiny in awhile but I don't think this is what brings me back in.

I'm sure a lot of people will get it and enjoy the content and get their moneys worth, but for me personally if the campaign is anything like the original games I'd rather not slog through it. And the rest of the content doesn't seem like value for money for me. It would have needed to add a bunch more locations for me to consider spending the price of a full game. All of the DLC as well as the base game has really disappointed me as far as content goes, at least content that didn't feel like filler.

I think I will await Destiny 2 and see what that is like.

I'm going to wait until we actually know what's in TTK before judging them.

Though the exclusive emotes are bullshit, even if I don't care.

They should have told people the content before announcing the price. But then again, they probably do not have it all narrowed down. Which is troublesome, and will concern those who think things will get "cut" for another add on later.

The entire financial structure of the game is built around those day 1 players sticking through it all to buy DLC. They're making a calculated bet. No one should be surprised by this pricing. Could do without the attitude, though.

I'm not going to rebuy content I already own to get the CE. The pricing for the standard edition and legendary editions are fine. Legendary edition is actually a great deal for new players.

There's no reason they couldn't create a CE for day 1 players that costs $60 but doesn't require us to rebuy vanilla Destiny + the two previous expansions. Or they could just keep the CE price the same and substitute the old content for a season pass for Year 2.

I've had the game since launch with the season pass. Only got to light level 24 and I was just wanting to come back to the game suddenly last week. However after reading about having to buy another $40 expansion after having already bought the pass and the last content upgrade looking like it barely added anything at all I think I might have to stay away from this game =\

I really want to come back but to pay ANOTHER $40 on top of the $80-100 whatever the game with the pass was at launch not too long ago is just insane =\

Bungie and Activision are doing an admirable job of whittling down the Destiny userbase to consist only of handpicked idiots that will pay whatever they're told for the thinnest slivers of content.

That user database would be priceless to marketing companies that have over priced tat to sell.
Hand picked? OMG, I feel so special!!!

Luke needs some PR training or something.

He does, he comes across as arrogant. I was disgusted at the way this dude answered the questions in this interview and kudos to Eurogamer for pressing on.

I mean it is Activision but what really grinds my gears is that this wasn't some Activision or guy/gal this was a dude, a dev at Bungie.

You want the cool extra DLC, loyal day one Destiny players? Buy it again. I think the attitude and his delivery -as it was presented in the interview- is what gets me. No tease, no hold on guys/gals for news later on down the line.

Luke Timmins was much graceful and eloquent on a video interview with GameSpot -I think- this past week.

It sucks they are holding some cool content hostage unless you buy everything which means doubling up if you're already a Destiny player. Hopefully if people keep hammering them about this, they'll eventually make some changes.

I really wanted to like Destiny...I sold it after a month because I had no way to do any endgame stuff since, for a 'social' game, it had literally no way to socialize with anyone to try and form up groups for anything endgame.

This does not make me want to come back. This does not make me want to come back at all.

Sounds like the legendary edition is a good deal for someone who never played the game prior. Or am I reading things incorrectly?

So let me get this straight.

If i want the new Sparrow, i'd have to buy the Digital Version... ok.

And if i'd ALSO wan't the 3 new shaders and 3 new emotes I would have to add in the Digital Collector's Edition since those only come with that version.

BUT WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!! I also want the Early Access weapons pack... So that only comes with the Physical Collector's Edition.

Fuck them.

This company has showed me that money comes first and not the client.

All those online things you get should be on all copies, Collectors Edition should be about giving you physical stuff imo and not separate everything like this.

He's always been like that. He just used to be on the side of the gamer. Back then it was endearing.

Now it just sucks.

During E3 on a stream I think I recall a Bungie employee, probably Deej, saying the only new area is some Hive ship.

No new planets or anything of that type.

I guess Bungie really did make a deal with the devil when they partnered with Activision.

It must suck for people that have nothing to do with the decision making, having to defend decisions that they may not even agree with.

In addition, $40 does not = £40, Activision. Fuck off.

Wait for the price drop after a month or two, don't pay this price for an expansion. There will be plenty of new games to play in the meantime.

So if this is an expansion pack ala other MMO's.....why make it cost 40 bucks to begin with :l? Many MMO expansions usually cost 20-30 bucks and that has a lot more content that what this expansion pack seemingly will have (one planet, a number of missions, new classes and a story).

I guess this is the result of that leaked DLC plan I suppose; 'expansion' pack released as a full priced tittle the fall after the first Destiny is announced, with next year having the sequel to Destiny, with the following year having another 'Taken King'-caliber full priced expansion pack.

I'm not a fan of the game, but it doesn't sound fair to fans of the tittle; Bungie directly wants to rip you off and they don't care if that bothers people, if this interview means anything.

Guess we will wait until the fall; if a lot of people buy this, than they have the 'right' so to speak to continue with that plan of DLC releases :l. If it sells badly or under expectations (the latter is likely, considering Battlefront and Activision's own Black Ops 3 is releasing around the time this releases), than the will re-consider the DLC plans to make it more appealing to consumers.

Traded my copy of Destiny on Ps4 in today. I have the xbone version digitally so there's no getting rid of that one. Not sure I can justify 40 bucks on this in September right before a shit ton of new games are coming out that I definitely want to play. The thing that gets me about these interviews is how they say it's a fully voiced campaign. What triple a game hasn't been fully voiced in the last 10 years? (Besides Nintendo)

It's kind of interesting thinking about Destiny and the other thread about how games should cost $100 now. I finally got the two expansions out now to give Destiny second chance. Still isn't feeling great.

I play just about every day.

Now I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, but if my math is correct (carry the 1...), yep, checks out. You're calling me an idiot aren't you!

I agree with the DLC pricing, but not on the main game,

Answer me this, which coop shooter has more on the disk than Destiny ?

And dont say Halo MCC, that is a collection

All 3 Borderlands games. Plus each games combined individual DLC has more content.

Bought the base game and season pass - Won't be picking this up as it's a complete rip off.
The geezer being interviewed is a bell end.

I was interested but after hearing Giantbomb discuss it and say it plays more like a "remix" than something totally fresh, I'll hold off and see how it shakes out.

Given that the collector's is sold out already, is there even a way to get the extra stuff? Or is there a digital version that includes that stuff and the extra unnecessary content people with the season pass/DLC own already?

This whole thing is so confusing, and pretty irritating for me personally given that HoW did a lot to win me back over after I quit when they were pulling this same piss poor PR stuff with the Dark Below announcement.

Doubt it... it's similar to the collectors edition ghost, or getting the blacksmith shader when you preordered call of duty... if you don't buy this new collectors edition... then you can't get it... ever.

Yeah I know. I'm saying that I hope the new missions that are on Venus, Earth, Mars and the Moon are not in the same play spaces as the missions we already have. I want new levels within the same planets. I don't want to run the Septkis Prime strike backwards again.

Not a lot you can do if gamers are buying into it. Walk away and move onto another game IP. Destiny 2 will double down. Bungie elders are building nice retirement funds.

im still waiting for an answer of whether the original LE will get me into the taken king or if they seriously think I'm going to buy DLC after the 99$ original pricetag....

Hey Luke, buddy. You said you guys look at Neogaf and all that on the Giant Bomb live show.

Tell us what the Taken King entails for 40 bucks so we don't feel ripped off.

And make the collectors stuff available for previous owners without purchasing shit we already have.

Please and thank you.

Welp, didn't realise it was Luke Smith. Sorry Luke, but you would've been extremely pissed if a company had pulled this shit a decade ago.

I gave up on Destiny a few months ago when I tried to buy a helmet (Obsidian?) and couldn't due to not having the DLC, plus being locked out of weekly strikes. Doubt I will come back to it again now.

$40 isn't a bad price if the content is worth it, which considering the main game... I have my doubts but that's really up to Bungie to justify that pricepoint

But £40? Lol, that's the price of a full game. I hope nobody in the UK buys this, you can buy a full game for that price on launch day and still have money left to spare on snacks to eat while you play. I have batman arkham on preorder XB1 for £37 and this DLC pack costs 10% more than that full game? absolutely ridiculous.

I really don't get it. Does the game actually sell enough to warrant such a content/price ratio?

I would love for some gaming "journalists" to do a piece on the business perspective of games development. Does management actually think about long term implications of providing low value content and bad fan interaction? I really can't believe that such a half-assed business model could be sustainable in the long run.

No new planets or anything of that type.
And again, if the first year of Destiny is anything to go by, we'll see two more DLC expansions which will include new strikes and story missions, but they'll take place in areas we've already been through dozens of times, only backwards. One new destination doesn't seem like nearly enough for that. It wasn't enough for the base game with its four destinations.

Unless we should expect something very different for year two...

They will...

However, we're 3 months away from this content being released... so you probably won't have all the details for a while. Wait to buy it when you have those details?

Seems like the best course of action was to never get into Destiny in first place, the content to price ratio seems to gradually get worse and worse with each expansion and it was really bad to begin with.
