Bungie apologizes for Taken King controversy, CE items to be sold separate

Let me get this straight. You're buying items that help you level quicker?

Isn't that straight out the scumbag f2p playbook?

I'm not specifically aware of what they grant or how it works, but it's probably intended as a more of a 'have some fun with your alts' type scenario, similar to recruit a friend from WoW, only with a different tint.

The price might not be fair, but it isn't ridiculous. PS4 themes are like $2, and they do actively nothing at all. Assuming they were to sell everything here piecemeal, they would charge 1.99 and no one would bat an eye. Which makes it just shy of $20.
$2 a shader/emote/ class item doesn't sound bad at all

Poor Luke. He's solid guy, a genuine gamer like us. People who didn't know him, didn't speak to him were insulting him personally, wishing horrible stuff to happen to him and for what? He's blunt and gives it to you straight. That's what we should all want instead of the flowery prose of PR.

Additionally, Publishers always set content price. Bungie wanted ODST to be a cheap expansion. Microsoft turned it into a full retail release. I imagine Activision is no different for Destiny.

This website does that every day to games journalists. He shouldn't get off any lighter because "he's a nice guy" but we really shouldn't be selective with who we rip to pieces.

He was ripped to pieces because he sounded like a flip/flop hypocrite.

He used to be so behemoth over these practices when he was a journalist... I say he was a closet DLC'er. ;)

eh, yea, I'll just stick to buying the taken king for $40.

Aint that dedicated to cosmetics shit, but that Year One shader does indeed look dope tho.

Luke sounds like he's really sorry about how he came across. Too bad he had to attach his apology to that half-assed olive branch mandated by Activision corporate. I'm done with Destiny for now, I'll see if I want to deal with any of this fuckery again in a few months.

Well hey, looking at the last 2 expansions, I guess that is about how much content they value at twenty bucks.

There's no mincing into "sorry you are upset".
(sorry: I do edit my posts like a maniac. Its a personal failing.)

I think the intent that sounded assholish was this kind of devious glee in poking at your fan base in trying to get them to realize that they're only anxious about the costs because the actually want to spend the $80 for the special stuff because in their heart, if they look deep and are honest with themselves, its worth it to them.

I hope to read in his apology what you seem to - a realization that that very mindset is fucked up and wrong, not just how it was communicated - blunt and sarcastic.

Not sure if that change of heart has actually occurred at Bungie, but fuck it, he did say sorry, so I'll roll with it. Don't like when these snafus become personal anyhow.

I would say this pic is out of place, but am pretty sure it was Luke himself that coined the term BOHICA back in the day, for DLC like this. So there's some irony there.

Exactly, and that's basically what it costs (slightly over, since there are nine items, not ten).

It's just a psychological thing, it seems like more money because it's one lump sum.

Fuck it, I'll buy it. I love this stupid game, and I've given it a TON of my time.

lmao so Bungie is basically telling their loyal fans to pay 60$ at launch for the game and then buy the season pass only to find out that you have to pay extra 40$ for the taken king that is for some reason not included in the season pass and then pay 20$ for emotes and shaders lol really bungie?

My words made it sound as if Bungie doesn't care about their most loyal fans.

except apparently you don't.

There mere fact that the words "I'm sorry" as a direct quote without any additional need for context appear in the post is, to me, a step forward in player relations (everywhere, not just for Destiny!). It's so rarely a blunt actual "I'm sorry", even moreso from a person in a position of power.

The hell? Why can't we always have this? At least there's a new precedent for someone outright admitting they screwed up.

There's no mincing into "sorry you are upset".
Indeed.

Edit: I'm not commenting on the actual state of the game or further pricing drama. Just to this one thing.

I'm long past caring about destiny and sold the game but glad they are responding. The prices on this shit looked horrible.

I figured they were just bleeding players and trying to get as much cash as possible from the increasingly few people that are still playing the game.

I think Luke's apology was sincere, but the whole post a Bungie.net reads odd. On the one had, Luke's apology was (IMO) unqualified. On the other, I don't think what Bungie is doing about it is at all sufficient to quell people's anger. Nine items are priced the same as The House of Wolves. I don't think there's any way to frame that as reasonable.

I actually don't care about the items at all. But they're presenting a really poor value proposition in the context of people already feeling the prior DLC (TDB in particular) was not a good value proposition. That's not a solution to the problem at hand.

That should just be part of TTK.

Bungie is insane if they think that TTK is worth $40 and that these little extra items are worth half the price of their xpack.
I agree that it should be part of the The Taken King standalone download. But since they're selling this stuff separately, this should really be $5 instead of $20.

Well props to them to make a way to get the additional CE stuff separately I guess, but $20, the same price as the freaking 2 expansions? Lol whatever.

this is what bothers me the most. what is the point of the season pass if they're just going to charge you a shitload more for future DLC anyway? this industry is so insulting to early adopters mots of the time.

This is what I said in the OT regarding this mess:

It's worse than the infamous Horse armor. At least that was just $2.50. This is $20 for some shaders most will never use, 3 emotes, and 3 class items that will get replace a day or two later. Horse armor was bad but this is taking it a bit far. This really should have been $10 tops, preferrebly $5.

Just for shits, I'll play devil's advocate here and ask why do you think all content they make should be free? You bought the season pass, but they literally outlined from day one what that got you (at least in terms of content, it's a different debate as to whether or not that content was quality).

Why do they owe you these new cosmetic items for free, and at what point do they stop owing you free stuff?

reading about all the buying options for this shit is stupidly confusing.

It'll probably take an hour to blow through the new content and then they expect you to repeat it for another 100 hours

Soooooooo done with this game.

I bought the game at launch and both DLCs in December (in one package). Why would someone pay $20 extra when new players get the game all everything for $80.

Selling the game to make sure I never cave. Wow, I never thought I'd hate Bungie. Feels like, what I imagine breaking up from an abusive relationship would feel like.

What is the $80 version and the $60 version? There is no $60 version that comes with The Taken King. The Legendary Edition, which is $60, comes with the base game and the first two expansions only. So the $20 difference between that and the Taken King CE includes The Taken King AND the digital collector's edition items (and the physical collector's edition items if you get that). That makes the $20 price for only the digital items look even worse.

40 dollars buys you the expansion. 60 dollars buys you the expansion and the "GOTY" edition of Destiny. 80 dollars buys you the collectors edition.

Some basic math would say the "value" of the collectors edition goods is 20 dollars, then.

I am not advocating spending 20 dollars on vanity content, it just makes sense where the number came from. "Value" is an abstract concept, especially when you're talking about digital vanity goods.

Is their solution seriously to have customers buy it for $20 god damn dollars? Why not just give it to players that already got the game and expansions?

The retail CE comes with a bunch of collectables too for that $20 increase.

They named it a season pass for a reason. They get to define the seasons.

In Destiny's case 'season one' was 'year one'. And The Taken King starts year two, so, new season pass... That I guess we'll hear about at some point once the smoke clears.

Awesome. Now I don't feel so bad about it. Hah.

Aussie Version:

September 2014: 100 dollars AUD
Feb 2015: 25 dollars AUD
May 2015: 25 dollars AUD
September 2015: 70 dollars AUD
(plus what, 35 AUD for the items?)
Feb 2016: ??
May 2016: ??

I really really really wanted to like Destiny. I wanted to play with my friends and have a great time. I was iffy from just the beta, but I said, you know, the gunplay was good and I loved the music, maybe full release will be more. And so I was let down.

But I continued to play, I loved taking on the strikes with my friends, pvp was fun, but I didn't get the season pass or expansions.
When those released and I found the weekly strikes gated me out for not having them, I traded it in the next day.

Maybe they just don't want the goodwill from their players, but they just make more and more bad decisions.

Shouldn't we be mostly blaming activision for the pricing of all this dlc bs? feels like bungie doesn't have a say in terms of pricing their dlc.

So. I haven't really kept up with this stuff. If I bought the digital CE at launch, how much is this expansion for me? And does the $20 stuff apply to me too, or did I get that in the CE?

The expansion would be $40 for you. And if you want the optional cosmetic DLC along with the expansion then it is $60. Your CE from before is for season 1, season 2 starts with TTK

That Mona Lisa expansion/DLC image that floats around is going to need another update after this. I can't believe how big this hole they're digging is getting. I'm glad I was done with Destiny after a few runs of the first raid, I feel bad for my friends who are completionists and still putting in tons of hours.

I wonder, am I the only that realizes that Luke's apology was nothing more than a force hand move since what he said in the interview is coming to light with Bungie thinking what they are offering is really worth $20.00 USD ie, We would throw money at the screen for said items.

This is one of those instances where I hope we see some developer diary in like 10 years talking about how the actual conversations went behind the scenes.

Because this shit is off the wall.

So im a bit confused. If i already own destiny on disc and that's it, what are my options to get taken king?

I find it sad that Luke Smith had to apologize, when it really is Eurogamer's fault for portraying him like an asshole.

You can buy it by itself (40 bucks) or with the previous expansions (60 bucks) or get everything with the cosmetic stuff (80 bucks).
