Bungie apologizes for Taken King controversy, CE items to be sold separate

there are big differences in that comparison

1. Borderlands is an actual good game
2. Gearbox probably has a little bit of decency left in them

Borderlands fucking has floaty physics and the gunplay is weak as hell. no feedback at all on anything

not even close to a "good" game.

opinions, how do they work?

All this over emotes and shaders. Destiny is a failure, and the reason is because the player base cares about something so irrelevant.

This is getting frickin ridiculous. These developers and publishers need to know their place. They can't just pull shit like this year. As someone else said, 9 more years to go.

Yeah the Alien Colonial Marines release reeked of "decency".

Yes, they literally can. Hardcore fans will buy it because hardcore fans of anything buy overpriced shit all the time. The rest of the community will largely express indifference. Most people who buy Destiny aren't going to feel incomplete because of a couple of emotes or shaders.

Does this mean that they value Destiny and all of its current expansions at $20, or am I reading this wrong?

Fuck everything about this.

Like, I dont want to sound like Im defending the practice at all, because its madness, but there is no actual inherent value to digital content. Its priced according to any number of factors, chief of which its value relative to expectation. So if the collectors edition is twenty dollars extra, the value on the collectors edition goods are twenty dollars.

Hearthstone sells hero skins for ten dollars. Mass Effect 3 multiplayer dlc was free. There is no standard to hit, just what feels right and what feels wrong. The takeaway from 20 dllar emotes should definitely be not buying them.

The collector's edition features a bunch of bonus content. I think it comes with a steelbook, even.

Wow, jschrier sure glossed over that issue.

But judging from his comments here, it was kind of expected. I think their article on the initial controversy was a lot more balanced out.

This person's post from that article sums this shit up...

ThePromise110 said:
As Jim Sterling said, devs and publishers will keep doing this shit because they know they can, for the time being, get away with it.

Fuck up.
Apologize.
Repeat.

No one should be glad that Bungie is fixing this shit; everyone should still be pissed and demand that they not fuck everything up again in future. But people are stupid and easily appeased, so their sense of “Ha! Gotcha!” and victory will cloud their judgement and Bungie will do the same shit again in a few months.

The collector's edition features a bunch of bonus content. I think it comes with a steelbook, even.

Appears to be the same steelbook that was "limited" last year. :|

I suppose it's a little pointless to suggest constructive criticism, but what can Bungie do to sweeten the deal? If $20 is not worth it for what's currently being offered, how about 10 shaders, 10 emblems, 10 emotes, 10 Sparrows? How about several days or a week of Early Access? How about some extra quests or story missions? XP bonuses? Taken King + Ep3/Ep4 expansion pass for $70-80?

I'm having a really hard time envisioning how any solution is going to satisfy the mob, seeing as any solution is going to be framed as "locking content behind a paywall".

This would not be such an issue, if the vanilla Destiny was not gutted from what it was supposed to be, just to make these overpriced packages with laughable content compared to other games in it's genre/sub-genre.

This in an experiment by Activision, if it remains successful, it may get adopted by others. Less for more.

Seemingly the only way to "satisfy the mob" with this kind of stuff is either to attach it to a toy, and/or be Nintendo.

Maybe just offer them for $5, which is what those cosmetics are worth.

TTK is $40 base for just the digital DLC
Yep, and the CE of TTK is $80.

It includes the following:
The Taken King expansion ($40)
The bonus content ($20)
And Destiny with original season pass content ($?)

If my math is right, Bungie themselves only value the original content at $20.

Fuck.

Can't believe people are defending these prices. This cosmetic bullshit is in no way worth $20.

Eugh, I'll definitely just stick to my story-driven single-player games and pray BioWare doesn't get any worse with its EA-regulated stuff.

Torches lit, pitchforks in hand... this entitled mob has no interest in appeasement. The "$20 for emotes and shaders!" line is merely regurgitated again and again, conveniently leaving out the three exotic class items (the first in the history of the game).

That "EMOTES AND SHADERS GRRR!" line is generally followed up with anger gurgling from their bowels (much like Gulrot) followed by a litany of expletives. Delightful. Truly.

funny enough I have the $80 physical CE pre-ordered.

Good that Luke apologized. I'm personally planning on not buying the expansion though. I just think the price is a bit too steep with all the new games rolling out in the fall. I'm sure the hardcore fans will be getting it no question.

But yeah, no new planet.... I dont think I want to spend all my time in a raid either.

By popular demand:

$20 for emotes and shaders, people. $20.

This is just the first year. We still have 9 more years of being shafted by the Bungie-Activision partnership. Remember that.

I don't see a problem. Might give them more money to make more content for the game. Works for Rockstar.

Don't have to buy it, and you aren't missing much if you don't.

I am trying to meet them halfway on this, since it's clear they want to command a high price for high-margin content. People seem to attach some kind of price value to useless junk like shaders and class items.....so how many of those does it take to make a $20 DLC pack acceptable? 20 shaders, 20 emblems, 20 class items?

It almost seems like the more they add, the less valuable a DLC pack becomes since your 1-3 characters can only really wear 2 cosmetics at a time.

What's actually worse then the pricing, is tons of people will buy this. Where did old Bungie go.

Correctly or incorrectly, Schrier assumed that the issue was "paying for content that I already own". Bungie squashed that and now the issue is "Actually, I don't think these cosmetics are worth $20."

Well, he went for supporting in-game micro-transactions to politely labeling this $20 price tag as Bungie "offering solutions".

Judging from the comments, I don't think anyone has really seen any resolution here.

Can you imagine them sitting in a meeting, trying to figure out how to apologize. And then suddenly somebody suggests selling them this for $20.

To what? I think even $10 or $15 would get people riled up when it comes to cosmetic stuff.

To something like 2.99 or 3.99. I'ts a bunch of god damn emotes, shaders and weapons. It's worth hardly anything so the idea of charging even $10 is an insult. Since when did a stupid skin pack with a few goodies warrant double figures?

And people were laughing at 343 for Halo. At least with 343, I won't have to pay 100's of dollars for a frickin game.

yeah but at least with Acti and Bungie (greedy as they are) we get a game that works as intended.

and the jury is still out as to whether halo 5 online will work as intended right out of the gate.

who knows, you may have to wait a few months to get matchmaking to working properly

It would be easy for them saying the next content will have more content compared to their old expansions so prices will raise and people will be okay with that statement

Destiny is just a colossal mess. I'm glad I never got into it, it just seems like never ending disappointment for fans.

It can be a fun shameless grinder. just wish Bungie had more heart. They claim to have such a huge team and yet just not much new content with these dlcs. might be a good deal if you could get everything for $60 in sept for a newbie tho.

A public service, certainly. And again, while you're remembering it... make sure not to forget to get your pre-order in for the new Madden, and Call of Duty '16 as well!

That one guy, you know, the one on the left side of the offensive line of your favorite team? He's got a different name on the back of his jersey this year!

Oh, and CoD has zombies again! Um... but they're from the lost city of Atlantis this year!

"Why do I have to pay for something I already own?" almost immediately changed into "Why do I have to pay for something?" There are some people who won't be happy until this stuff is free, and there are others who won't be happy even then and they'll just move on to harping about something else in a game they don't play and have "deleted" 5 times.

This is separate. Is it really that hard to see?

Before, not offering the option to get this stuff unless you re-purchased the game was offensive.

Now, a $20 price tag for this paltry offering is offensive.

I mean seriously, that's the same price as their DLC packs that they talk up to high heaven despite offering very little for $20. They are saying that this stuff is the same value...

Ah, well, forget it. I don't even play the game anymore. It's just so sad to see the amazing potential it had be completely squandered by greed.

Hm, on second thought I might take back what I said about $60 might be a great deal for newcomers. Because Destiny is sort of a traditional mmo treadmill- the old raids see wayy less traffic. And worse- due to lack of matchmaking it will be tough for newbies to find groups to get into the old dungeons.

So yeah, $60 for all the Destiny DLCs will be a waste of money. The only dlc worth buying will be the new Dlc for Destiny fans (but I'm not paying $40 I'm spending that on a new game like SW: Battlefront or the new CoD)

A good chunk of the team has probably started on Destiny 2

I question the amount of people working on these DLC packs.
