Gears of War UE - Cinematic Comparison

The tonal change is pretty massive. I don't like the new faces much. They look like gnomes. And the weird lack of specularity just seems odd. Like everything is matte painted or made of clay. Facial animations are better though but they seem flatter and less detailed...as does everything in fact. Its a very odd change imo. Just doesn't feel like the same game really. At least atmospherically.

And the new one loses the artistic touches that made the original unique.

Oh well, guess I shouldn't expect anything less from Microsoft.

Having shitty cutscenes that were framed poorly and had bad effects gave it its unique look?

That's because now it looks more real. The overly shiny specular maps were one of the weakest aspects of Gears and of that entire era of graphics really. It's funny to me because John Carmack went to great lengths to rein that kind of kind thing for Id Tech 4 in 2004 because he was aware of the problem. Yet everyone else just made their textures as shiny as possible for years, realism be damned, to standout on an HDTV I guess.

This was nothing more than a product of people making liberal use of shaders for the first time and we are far beyond that point now.

The XB1 version is technical superior and looks really good but the original version has much better atmosphere.

Can't really explain it but the new version just seems flat and hasn't got the same feel as the original.

Put me in the new>old camp. Old one looks great for its day, but the new one blows it out of the water, the scene with RAAM killing the Lieutenant especially.

I do wish the faces were a little more expressive, but eh.

I agree.

I prefer the faces on the Xbox One but other than that. I like the original better.

I think they could have been a little more creative with the colors and general look of the game. Obviously the new one looks better but it just looks so dull and blank. Maybe they could haven made it new and shiny but still true to the tone of the original

That doesn't mean metal should look like clay though. Steel, chrome and metal should be shinier then bare porcelain. Its one thing to tone things back. It's something else entirely to make a material no longer look correct.

The new version looks very.........bland, looks like they got a 'bland' brush and smeared it all over the game it just looks too clean and not gritty like the original!!.

Guess this new team dont have the artistic prowess that Epic have/had!

All metal is not shiny and this is on a dirty world ravaged by war. It makes sense for things to look dull.

I also think people overestimate how often we encounter shiny objects, like ever. When I take a look around my house or even walking around in the city, the shiny objects I see are few and far between, you have glass, you have glossy paint jobs on cars, and things like electronics that are intentionally made to be shiny but other than that, most things I see are incredibly dull and that goes for metal as well.

I agree that there are better material models out there than this game but it still a thousand times more accurate to reality than the original ever was. The original game looked like half of the world was covered in vaseline.

Good lord, we aren't bringing back the word "gritty" are we? I'm having flashbacks to 2006.

God help us all.

They just keep on making this game look further and further from its Original intent ... Oh GOD !?!

No thanks !

What???? Where are you looking son? The original looks rough as hell

The beta was amazing, the campaign looks amazing

I can't bloody wait!!!! 1 month to go!!

I still prefer the newer look. I'm sorry, but 2006 Gears looks like shit. 2006-era Unreal 3 in general looks like shit to be honest. Circa 2008 UE3 (Gears 2 basically) is the point after which it still holds up today in my opinion.

It just looks... different. This feels less like a straight remaster and more of a different flavor of the same game. Bizarre.

New version is way better. The destruction of the helicopter in particular always looked ridiculously bad in the original.

There are some minor things here and there I like better in the original but overall the new version is vastly superior, I don't see how this is even an argument.

There's a lot from the new version that I like, but like others have mentioned, I kind of feel a lot of the mood is lost too which is a bummer.

How many hulk sized space marines, underground aliens or satellite lazer cannons do you see strolling around your city?

The "realism" argument is so silly to me. Why would you want an alien world with fantasy creatures and tech to look like you mundane world outside your window?

I fear the DF article. All these changes made by port devs half way around the world who don't know the artistic intent of the original team will make for a long read.

I actually like the Ultimate Edition footage much more. The blue glow in the original is distracting, while the new game is much easier on the eyes, not to mention the far improved camera work. More color isn't always a good thing, especially when the color isn't used well and doesn't fit the tone of the game itself.

New cinematic looks cool.

If I don't think of the opportunity cost, this whole "putting actual work into remasters" thing is totally fine.

Their faces are markedly improved. Everyone's face in the original is smushed.

And people are right that the characters look human now, especially Cole. Cole in the original looked like...something else. <_<

The remaster looks way better.

Wow this looks more like a remake than a simple remaster, awesome stuff here! Can't wait to play Gears again, even if I'll buy it only when it will costs a bit less.

What did they do to Minh?

Looks great in some parts and pretty hokey and unpolished in others. Don't like some of the changes to the faces either. They feel different rather than improved.

I definitely prefer Gears of War: UE over the original. Everything just looks better.

But, it's only $40...

I don't think not knowing the intent of the original team is going to be an issue given that Rod Fergusson is running the Coalition. For better or worse the changes made are intentionally done against the context of original design.

I definitely feel like the character models in the older version were capable of better expressions on their faces than the new models.

Metal on another planet is still metal. There are almost certainly not going to be different properties to it so it is not hard at all to understand what it would look like.

A game is not going to look mundane just because the materials look like they are supposed to. And Epic was absolutely trying to make this game look real in 2006 character designs aside, as is pretty much every other sci-fi developer. Half of science fiction is about being based in SCIENCE, as in our reality. One of the most appealing things about sci-fi is the notion that it's based in our reality and the endless possibilities of said reality.

Regardless, I find the argument that because it's fantasy that means they can make things look as stupid as they want without question silly. The best sci-fi universes tend to be those that feel tangible.

A developer can do whatever they want of course, but Epic were absolutely pushing for realism back then.
