Sort of like the Tomb Raider DE situation. Better looking faces technically speaking, maybe even artistically too depending on subjective opinion, but lacking the same emotive qualities.
This is exactly what I am trying to say.
I am not saying the older characters are more impressive technically.
I am saying it is my opinion, and no doubt it is subjective and others will disagree with it, that the newer characters lack character, or as you put it, "emotive qualities."
Yet for having this opinion, I get lines like "did you even watch it" or that I am "cherry picking" which is a bunch of bullshit.
And yes, I even concede the newer models are clearly capable of more subtle emotion, but especially in that Markus example, he goes from no emotion whatsoever to a holy shit look. Yes, the holy shit look is well done, as I said in my first post with the picture that no one seemed to take the time to read. However I prefer that the older character has emotion the entire time.
Yeah, I agree with you about the expressions. Something definitely feels lost in translation. These hardened characters just feel too... "soft". Maybe if it were Judgment when they were younger and inexperienced, but they've all been through a lot of horrors over the years and the new face textures/modelling don't seem to reflect the scars as well.
Soft is a good way to put it I would say. Again, I concede the characters go through the emotions in a more pronounced way, but the starting emotion in both examples is what I have an issue with. They, as you put it, look "soft" instead of hardened and or pissed or angry, which I feel the older characters clearly had that quality.
It doesn't have to, because factually, the new version is more expressive while the old version was super stiff because the facial rigs were very simple in comparison. Conveying emotion isn't done by having very static faces, faces are not stiff, faces go through a lot of emotion. Preferring one or the other is subjective, but factually, there's more emotion in the expressions of the new version simply based on the fact that they move more appropriately, (and there are more closeups overall).
See above what I say about Marcus.
But to elaborate, there is no doubt it is more impressive technically, however it is the base emotion that seems off, even lifeless.
Perhaps this was intentional to make the subtle animation that much more noticeable and the transition even more apparent. However it is the lifeless look of the new versions I am not a fan of and think that even with the limitations of the older technology, they somehow were able to convey more emotion.
I am not denying it is a fact the new technology is capable of more impressive animation. What I am saying is I do not think this automatically has equated to being better at conveying the emotion in the overall scene.
And with the above said, I am out of this thread for good. Literally never clicking it again.
It is not like I am cancelling my preorder based on what I have seen. It was just an observation. One I thought was actually a casual one until people felt the need to address me like I am so sort of idiot. I thought observations like the one I made are why we even post these types of videos, to discuss them, but clearly what do I know.
