It's supposed to only be "Ultras" which are the named enemies with the icon to the left of their name.

Spoiler for the last regular mission in TTK:
I cannot beat Oryx in this last mission. This game has been so easy so far, but this dude has killed me 7 times in a row now. I get to the second phase, and maintain for a bit, but eventually he just rushes in and kills me in one hit. Very frustrating. What am I missing? Just suck less?

It'll be patched such that the effect turns off on the first dropped engram, rather than when the engram is collected, as it is now. Enabling people to get the max stack effect and then cheese bosses for unlimited exotic engrams was obviously not the intent; I'm also surprised it wasn't identified as a possible exploit. It'll last one week, tops. Of course, the hardcore will have gotten all the exotics possible by then. What a mess.
I died quite a few times there.
When he comes in with the blade, I'd run out of the way, jump and turn to fire on him when the swing lands. Didn't do a ton of damage, but after 5-6 cycles I took him down.

Three of coins needs a small cooldown to stop back to back uses in a short time, and it also need to be limited to major bosses IMO not just named ultras, that's if it stays as an exotic booster and not legendary if they were to change it.

At the end of it all, I ended up using about 20 Coins, and only got one Engram. It turned into the awful Daft Punk helm for Titan. I'm so fucking soured on Destiny after my luck with the coins and the exotic Engrams Xur sold.
If it only worked on Heroic and above Strike+Raid bosses I'd be fine with it. Having it work on random farmable ultras is stupid.

I agree it should be strike/raid bosses only.
If you use a Three of Coins which you can buy from Xur, killing an Ultra has a chance to drop an exotic engram. It's a consumable so you need to use one every time you kill an ultra.

So for the 3 of Coins, is it just a case of activating it, doing a mission with a named boss, and avoiding picking up any Engrams that drop? Then just repeating the mission to do it again?

Right. You activate it to give yourself X% chance at a drop when you kill the boss. If it doesn't drop, you get a buff to your next 3 of coins, activate a new one, and repeat until you do get an exotic, then repeat from the beginning.
People have just found particularly fast ways to go through this process.
So from my first run with 15 Three of Coins, I got two fucking Mask of the Third Man, and Young A. Spine gauntlets. smh.
For my second one,with 20 Three of Coins, I somewhat got better loot, hah. a 290 Monte Carlo, and the 290 Herafter sniper. Finally, a new exotic.
But man, I also got another fucking Mask of the Third man and a warlock gauntlet. Damn, man. Feels like they playing me with this shit. lol

Alright, I'm thoroughly confused.
I'm a fair weather Destiny player who only picked up TTK when the bundle was on sale digitally that came with the previous two expansions.
I was playing through Dark Below and House of Wolves with my level 32 Warlock before TTK dropped, and finding the missions were adequately challenging for my level.
Now, since TTK has released, when I go back and try to do my unfinished missions from those two expansions, they are rated at ridiculously lower levels than I am. Dark Below missions were at 14 and 16. The Crota's Will strike was only available on easy.
What the hell happened? I can see the "Impossible" difficulty but it's locked behind 240 Light. So my only choice is to play hilariously easy missions until I hit 240 Light, then play Impossible difficulty?
Can someone explain this to me? Bungie certainly doesn't seem willing to.

Thats because before, old gear wasnt scaled down by half. Thats why a pre ttk exotic is 160 now instead of 320. They should still be challenging.

probably add a cooldown of some sort i'd imagine.
Scourge of Winter, the checkpoint leading into the boss room.
After 60 or so coins, I ended up with 4 primaries, 1 special, 4 helmets, 3 gauntlets and 1 chest.

That is missinformation. The buff disappears as soon as you kill a boss (ultra) It says so right on the ToC description and the buff icon disappears as soon as you kill the boss. Pop ToC, suicide kill boss, rinse repeat. Picking up engrams doesn't affect anything. You can make a giant pool of them on the ground for shits and giggles if you like, but grabbing them every drop doesn't change your odds.
Damn.. I didn't about this. I sharded the duplicates.
Okay, I think I shall go back in. Somehow my rocket suicide didn't work and I lived.

What's the issue specifically? You highlight and select them if you want to track a specific one. That way the next location you need to head to gets highlighted on the location select screen.

So just learnt of the Exotic suicide run. 15 Three of Coins got me 3 Engrams. Not decoded yet.
Few questions on them, if I decode them on Warlock will they be Warlock exotics or random class? If I decode them before reaching lvl 40 will the be gimped or will they be lvl 40 Exotics?

What specifically is confusing? You accept the quests, then they show up on the map with the Taken King logo. If you track them then the tracked ones have a little green target on the map screen.
They're all random class, level 40
Supposedly they've keyed exotic engram decoding to favor exotics you don't own already but people have been getting dupes so who knows
