PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

I want to get Samurai Shodown Anthology for PS2 but after seeing the prices of 70+ used I rather get the much cheaper Wii version.

Got a set of component cables earlier for the ps2, and its been hooked up to the tube ever since! Been replaying Tales of the Abyss. Want to get a swap magic to open the flood gates and play imports!

Let's list great ps2 imports please!

Erm...the component cables I got weren't official Sony. Is that an issue?

what samsho games are on Wii VC? seems that would be the obvious choice!

1-4 as far as I know.

The anthology has 1-6 but skips 5 special. 6 is an Atomiswave game, so I wouldn't have expected a VC release, but it sucks how neither the anthology nor VC doesn't have 5 Special.

Hey just wondering if there is any recommended place to buy PS2 component cables?

I actually have a cheap third party one that I bought back in 2006 or so, but they were never great and cut out from time to time.

Thanks.

Try to find Sony PS3 component cables.

I always like when this thread gets bumped. Just the other night I was looking at my PS2 collection and soaking in the memories

EA Sports Big was such a great thing that I'm glad existed and sad it no longer does. Freekstyle is way too underappreciated and deserves to be mentioned right alongside SSX. Such good times

Freekstyle was amazing. On a side note, I miss stuff like Downhill Domination. Imagine something like that with today's tech.

I think the whole "today's tech" thing is what's preventing it from happening. Budgets are too high nowadays which is why pubs are so risk-averse. PS2-era that shit would fly since a flop didn't necessarily tank ur studio.

I think this is overstated. You can still make budget games that look good and are fun, but don't break bank. Modern tools are really fantastic. Big pubs just compete in the pissing contest of trying to be the next big thing, thus the budgets are obscene.

I found a copy of La Pucelle Tactics, and the disc has almost no scratches, but there is a weird light dent in the disc. It's towards the middle of the radius of the disc, but it still won't read.

Anyone know if you can, like, de-dent a disc? Maybe heating it up?

Yeah, by today's tech I dont really mean mind blowing full force utilization. With just a modest amount of effort (think Revelations 2 not RE6) in the right places.

This is what I consider to be the saddest part of modern gaming. The 6th generation of consoles was a great time to be playing games. Whatever you were into, there was a company making that type of game and it seemed like all the big names in the industry were able to get their pet projects made.

That's all gone today and it's exciting but also kinda sad to see those big names from the past having to go to Kickstarter now to make their game a reality. And it's sad to watch some of them fail, like First Wonder.

I hear some people say that the indie scene is where all the middle tier games went, but it's not the same. There's a lot of talent in the indie scene but it's so disorganized that it's a hassle to find what you're into.

Finding indie games you like on steam or around the net is 1000 times easier than finding PS2 games back in the day lol.

Alot of b-tier games are still around on the handhelds and in Japan, though, which I would argue were always hubs for such games.
I know Nocturne is the one with the hard reputation but Digital Devil Saga is beating me to a pulp! Takes me on average 4 tries to beat any one boss. And a lot of the time I'm just chipping away slowly because I can't output optimal damage. Its pretty awesome.

Presumably I'm near the end of the first game. This goddamn tower never ends.
4 tries seems pretty good to me lol. I rarely beat SMT bosses with less.

I'm gonna pick up SNK fighting game collections within months from now...I really need to give Fatal Fury, World Heroes and Art of Fighting a try as I played King of Fighters(even back in the arcades) and Samurai Shodown back then(and will own them soon).

They're cheap which is great but if you're picky about accuracy the Wii VC versions are a more expensive but better option
FWIW I opted for the PS2 versions but want KoF97 and LB2 on Wii VC

Found some games today:

Crimson Sea 2
Killer 7
Demon Stone (Forgotten Realms)
MDK2
Bujingai (Gackt lol)
Drakan
Chaos Legion
Oni
Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex

Stand Alone Complex was the most expensive at $8. It plays great, but what suprised me is the packaging. It has reversible cover art. I thought this wasn't a thing until the PS3 era.

How common were reversible covers in the PS2 era?

What the hell??! You're right, it does have a reversible cover! I bought it with the shiny cover in place and never knew the difference because that's the way the instruction manual is printed.

Nice. I too would like to know if any reversible covers are out there. I also have a game that came with two covers in one sleeve, I think one is in English and the other in French, so probably sold in Canada but I need to look for it to see which game it was.

Just snagged a PS2 at Goodwill on the cheap. The tray ejection is a little wonky but it runs like a champ. Playing God of War and I'm amazed at its quality. I had messed around with Ascension on PS Now and the difference isn't HUGE.

I wish I woulda kept my old PS2 around but this unit will do fine.

I look forward to your thoughts on Samurai Western, phenomenal game.

I played about an hour of it and I really like it. I think I'm definitely not utilizing the battle system to its full extent though and I end up spamming the attack and dodge buttons, haha. I'm gonna play some more thus evening and make a conscious effort to use more of the fight mechanics. How long is the game?

I gotta get a copy of rule of rose. the collector in me needs it.

Haha, that's pretty much what drove me to get it. I want a full Atlus set for my PS2 and I knew this one would probably be the biggest thorn in my side to get and I figured if PS4's PS2 emulation ended up supporting discs, more people might get into PS2 collecting. So I wanted to get it before the price might've gone any higher :/

Some of my most recent PS2 grabs for my collection:

I played quite a bit of Kuon over the weekend and I REALLY like it! FromSoft is just so damn good at building atmosphere.

Looking back on many of these games, I'm so relieved that I picked them up years ago when they were dirt cheap.

That would be pretty hype. I would embrace the PS2 nostalgia wave.

Interesting. My copy, purchased from Target, was actually the other way around. The second cover was the one displayed.

And goddamn I love that game. We played countless hours of multiplayer. The controls were kind of stiff, but you could get some insane acrobatics going once you mastered them. Triangle jumps and missile dodges for days.

4 player battles in the rice fields were god tier. Everyone crouching to hide behind the crops. Aiming at random places, hoping your reticle would go red to give someone away.

I know Digital Devil Saga is available on PSN, but I'm wondering if it plays well on PCSX2 so it would be worth grabbing physical copies. It seems fairly easy to find physical copies of both games. Would be amazing to buy a brand new in box PS2 game from a retailer nowadays, haha!

If PS4 gets disc-based PS2 BC going...I'll probably never play another PS4 game again, haha.
I'll be surprised if we get disc based at all.

But I know for one thing that it'll be easier for me to record PS2 games as I don't have to worry about that nasty interlacing that plagues 90% of the PS2 library.

It's one of the worst games I've ever played. Great story and music, gameplay is godawful. Don't regret selling it for a moment, as long as it got a good home.

Around 5-7 hours. Five times that if you want to unlock all the awesome extras.

I've got some select PS2 games on my eBay watch list in anticipation of PSX next weekend. If they announce a disc-based emulation solution (not holding my breath) I will be ready to jump on some purchases right away.

PS4 disc based PS2 emulation would be godlike, probably never gonna happen though. If Sony creates the impossible though we will all be like this:

...ehhh, not all of us.

i used to champion BC in consoles (ive a few threads on it!) but OG hardware really is the way to go for me - i know it's cluttery/etc but i've got a PS2 with a fliptop case mod for imports & an HDD loader that kills the loading time on stuff like Suikoden V/etc, over RGB. I can throw any disc i please at it.

would a hypothetical all-in-one PS4 be cool? hell yeah, and i'd celebrate more gaffers revisiting classics - but even if it somehow happened (not likely, since they love selling us our old games back), it'd be loaded with compromises. i'm done with that.

and not to feed into the fear-based bubble/price spikes, but yeah, now's prolly not a bad time to grab the cheaper cult/ec titles ya'll might be after

hardware-based BC is the bees' knees. Emulation, however, I only see use in when on a handheld. Why would I use a PS4 for emulating PS2 games, when I can do it 5x better on my PC?

As seen by the emulators on my EZFlash cart and PSP, as well as the array of home consoles on my desk, not including a PSOne despite that being one of my main collections.
