Final Fantasy VII PS4 |OT| One last time before the remake

The blur filter itself wouldn't put me off the game, but it is very annoying that there are inconsistencies across the same letter. Like when there's a double-L, one is thicker than the other. What the hell is that all about?

The problem is that it's not an anti-aliased font, it's a font that is filtered as mere graphics data "after the fact", if you get what I mean. Which is why the B in Barret looks almost like an 8 with the top left corner rounded off - only a non-discriminating filter setting would do that.

Made me laugh a tad.

Cloud: "That language is not for me WOO WOO!"

I'm using the free theme, but honestly it's kind of an eyesore. White on bright green is like

Yeah. The text was likely converted to an image and then run through something to turn it into vectors (like the Trace tool in Illustrator and other vector graphics apps), so it could then be stretched to any resolution.

I love the cheats and speed boost. So smart for people who just want to enjoy playing (or replaying) the game at their own pace and cheesing through the parts they don't care about. I understand why people feel they devalue the achievements, but you could always "cheat" at games anyway by looking at guides. This is just a different, more convenient (and probably tempting) method at getting a leg up. I would never, ever have gotten (or known about) the Barret date without a guide, so I'm going to need to cheat one way or another to platinum this.

I just started. Man the memories.

I also renamed Cloud to my name and Barrett to Mr.T lol.

3x speed will make it more fun for me. :)

I just got out of Midgar and I noticed that the music on the world map resets after every battle. I'm pretty sure it never did that on the PS1 version. It's sad not to be able to hear the world map theme in it's entirety and it gets really annoying hearing the first few seconds of the theme over and over again after each battle. This bug might ruin the game for me. :(

Does using the cheats disable the trophies?

There was the same bug on FFX HD for PS4. It got patched.

Yeah, I hate how this nukes some of the atmosphere. I'll be chilling in menus for longer than usual now.

Not a fix, but maybe turn off random encounters for a bit until you have had your music fix? I hope they patch it like FF X HD on PS4.

I guess that would help alittle but this port feels very rushed and unpolished. I like the X3 speed but the game seems kinda glitchy. I wish Square had more respect for the original Final Fantasy VII but clearly they are more focused on the remake.

really down on the quality of this port. just played the bombing mission and the ugly font/ui smoothing, the sound in the fmvs (the opening 'starfield' in particular sounded noticeably compressed), and the weird audio issues like the siren stopping after every battle and the music continuing to play in scenes where it shouldn't made me put it down and go back to the ps1 version.

never played the pc port but this is pretty unfortunate.

The 3x speed makes me feel that I should rush through the game, so I died to the scorpion mech since I didn't pay attention lol.

I should try to enjoy the game instead. :p

I like the quick battle transition of this port.

Just realised some trophies didn't make it like getting a gold chocobo and one of trophies for defeating one of the weopons is not there :( at least I am enjoying it after last playing it 15 years ago it feels so new again.

You can't "mod it to widescreen," the original background artwork was made for 4:3 and there is no missing information on the left and right. You could fake it by zooming in and cutting off the top and bottom, which IS losing visual information just to force the game to conform to the aspect standards of a completely different medium.

There is absolutely no reason for this game to be anything but 4:3. Just like The Shining.

I'm playing it in "Wide Zoom" so no part of the screen is missing it just slightly stretched to make the most of the screen real estate (1cm top and bottom border, maybe an inch on the sides, playing on a 55 inch TV).

I like the quick battle transition of this port.

the faster loading is definitely the big upside to it, but for me it doesn't quite make up for the other issues. if the first 20 minutes put me off this much, i can only imagine what other weird oversights and inconsistencies will pop up in the next 20 hours. :P

This is still my favorite game of all time. I can not help it.
It's been mine running for 18 years, since I first played it over a friend's house. I didn't have a PS1, so I didn't get to play it on my own until the PC version came out a year later. I knew it was special when I watched my friend play it from the very beginning up until about the first Reno boss fight. Then a year later, I played the entire game for myself and it's always been my favorite.

For a while FF VIII was, but right now it's all about VII for me. Any game has made me come back for a 10th or so replay has gotta be special. I remember importing the PS1 release when it launched in Japan and playing entirely blind (as with V&VI). It was a most magical experience in gaming. Even without knowing too much of the language besides comprehension of the battle commands and materia/equipment the story still came through for me. It was such a visually thrilling journey that I didn't even mind not being able to read it at the time. It was rather amazing how much of the story I actually understood in Japanese version from how the characters and scenes were directed when I eventually played the US release and could read the details. Such iconic imagery that still resonates greatly.

That FF VII playthrough was my favorite gaming experience. Each time I do a re-play it brings back some of that excitement.

So, I think I figured out the issue with Best Bromance.

There's a current exploit in Cosmo Canyon that allows you to farm Affection Points with Barrett. If you do this, you glitch the trophy. I did it a few times for safety, and it ended up making it impossible to earn the trophy. Luckily, I had a save from back then, reloaded and played through. Got the trophy as soon as the first attendant talks to you when the date starts.

DON'T USE THIS EXPLOIT IF YOU WANT THE TROPHY.

I did not get any underwear from the Honey Bee Inn but I still got picked by Don Corneo and got the trophy.

IIRC, the underwear only helps in that the girls in the makeup room will offer to put makeup on Cloud if you acquired them, which only really marginally helps his chances of being picked by Corneo.

Sorry if this has been covered somewhere, but does the PAL version (FINALLY) come in 60hz and without additional black borders or are we still stuck in that hell from back in the day because the game needs to remain authentic to our original shitty experiences?

The PS4 version also has trophies and the dialogue corrections from the PC version:

I used the same capture device to record both the PS4 version and the PS1 version running on PS3.:

FF7 PS4 version video: (used the new 3X speed feature for part of it).

This should be added to the OP.

No shame in that. Mine too (though sometimes I change my mind to SotC). I never get tired of playing it or reading about it.

When this port was announced last year, I had the same initial WTF reaction as most people watching the conference (because it really was an incredible troll move). But then my wife said, "Cool! An excuse to play it again." And I've been looking forward to it since.

No shame whatsoever; FFVII has been my favorite video game since I was 11 years old.

Xenogears is right up there. Ditto Mass Effect Trilogy.

I did a big laugh when the "Scene has been blocked from recording" popped up during THE Aeris scene, just incase you were broadcasting to the one person on earth who didnt know about it.

Ha! That's great. The same thing should happen when
Cait Sith "dies" for a few minutes
.

We are brothers...FF7 and SOTN are my fav

Plus I've been wanting to do another run of FF7 and the "cheats" like x3 mode and god mode make it worth my 15-16th time through the game

Counting down the minutes before my shift at work ends so I can go home and play more. Unfortunately, I still have 4 hrs to wait...

Has anyone gotten the date with Barrett trophy to poP yet? I noticed a few pages back it was not happening for some.

How does one access the free PS4 theme? I'd heard there was a free, lesser one in addition to the one that comes with the game. I'm not buying it until Wednesday, but I wanted to download this for now.

Pretty sure its only available when you buy the game. Once you buy FF7, the theme will automatically download.

Edit: never heard about a free theme coming out. Would be cool for those who just want the theme to be able to get it for free.

Just got past the
Reno
boss fight and learned about the affection thing. Hoping it's still possible to get Barret to date me. According to guides the only thing I've done to increase his affection is the Don Corneo scene. Oops.
