Thanks to this thread I picked up King's Quest for $8.50.

I am so torn these days. I have been trying to hold out for releases on Gog because I like their business practices and game curation better than Steam.

But now Gog has rejected Alpha Polaris for being too niche, which certainly doesn't bode well for other small adventure games and the prices on Steam are just so cheap sometimes. Thanks to this thread I got Read Only Memories for $2 and Anna's Quest for $7 and now King's Quest for $8.50. These are 2015 games too, the price just decreases so quickly for games.

Hey I just picked this up on Steam sale, I played the first one and loved it, glad to see some good impression of it since it's a bit of blind buy for me.

How about Lost Horizon 1/2 ? Any good?

I'm in the mood for some PnC since I've been inundated by 100hrs RPG since the start of the year.

I think my main problem with Gabriel Knights puzzles was that you pretty much always had all locations available once you had gotten there the first time, with several scenes at most locations, and that the order in when they changed between relevant and irrelevant felt a bit arbitrary, where Gray Matter at least had a progress bar at the locations in each chapter that helped to point you in a direction, without giving too many hints. That frustrated me quite a bit, and turned me to walkhroughs at some points.

As said before, I don't remeber the puzzles from Gray Matter in that much detail, so I won't argue for them too much, but I did feel that they struck a pretty good balance when it came to difficulty for me, which made it enjoyable to play.
 
^the multi-tasking locations is a part of what i love about gk1. Because there were multiple orders you could do to progress in some places and it felt like open-exploration and a time simulator. Granted, it could result in people getting very stuck in some areas. And in the anniversary remake they made an effort to address exactly what youre talking about and cut down on the multitasking possibilities... (i didnt like the remake very much :P)

The first one is pretty good. It's on the easier side and the puzzles are mostly-inventory based, but the game flows well from location to location. The story is pretty interesting and has an epic world-trotting kind of feel a la Indiana Jones.

Haven't played the second game but IIRC it received mixed reviews, namely for its short length.
 
I got Void and Meddler from the Steam sale, it looks beautiful. So many cyberpunk games, so little time.

Looks good and I want to play it but not all the episodes are out yet :-\

So last night I finished Goodbye Deponia and I enjoyed it. Story wise, it did wrapped up Rufus' adventure quite nicely, but I didn't expected it to have such a dark ending. I enjoyed most of the puzzles, and got stuck on a couple of them (namely how to get that damn space heater), probably because it's been a while since I played any PnC.

Today I'm starting on Broken Sword 5, and probably Lost Horizon after that.
 
Welcome to the Deponia club. Yeah the finale really catches you off guard. Really makes you feel. After playing them all in a row it was like hard to not have anymore after Goodbye Deponia haha

i disagree about it wrapping up nicely for one major reason:
the game just got done explaining to us that rufus can be repeatedly cloned.. you *just* brought him back to life... so how is that really final? And then it felt like their central environmental problems werent resolved at all. So i was left wondering "what happens now."
That said: i loved all 3 games.
 
What a week for adventure game sales. First I picked up King's Quest, then the Moment of Silence released on Gog and now Gog is having their winter sale with all the LucasArts adventures on sale for 75% off and Her Story for 40% off.

Dreamfall Chapters Book 4 is releasing tomorrow and now that all the episodes are on Unity 5 it might actually run well and King's Quest Episode 2 is releasing on the 15th.

There is also the Adventure X 2015 expo happening on the 12 and 13th in London and I am going this year.

It feels like a great time to be a fan of the genre!

I keep trying to rekindle the love I had for PnC games in my youth but I just can't. My patience and tolerance for being stuck has been obliterated over the years of modern gaming. My first attempt was with Deponia. I stubbornly try to play without looking at a guide. I eventually gave in and looked up a puzzle. Place balloon with hook in heater - WTF?? All it takes is looking up one really illogical puzzle and every time I'm stuck I'm wondering if it's another obtuse puzzle I'm never going to get and I should just look up the answer. Currently playing Grim. It's gone quite well so far but now I'm becoming stuck and getting bored.

i agree. i play the genre mostly for the story and characters now. try dreamfall chapters that is pretty good and no difficult puzzles. Stasis is pretty good too and although puzzle heavy only one was difficult.

But then i lately tend to gravitate to things like life is strange. Or Jensen's game (i must be one of the few that liked moebius and i loved grey matter despite it going insane puzzle wise in the last 15 minutes).

I think except for games with no real puzzles like lis or df the only adventure game i finished the last few years without checking a guide was stasis.

maybe try the first book of unwritten tales. it has pretty straightforward puzzles while still being a traditional point and click adventure. pretty charming too. 2nd game ups the crazy puzzle ante quite a bit tho imo.

fran bow is another game with traditional gameplay style but straightforward puzzles.

I'll check a guide in most games if I've been stuck for a while. I don't play most adventure games for the puzzles so I appreciate developers like Wadjet Eye making them relatively easy.
 
I use guides whenever I get stuck long enough that makes the game not fun anymore.

The first Deponia has HORRIBLE puzzle design. Play through it with a guide without any second thoughts. The next two games improve upon it greatly, though still have some bad ones (additionally, some puzzle only make sense for German speakers, like the one with fish scales and dandruff).

You really can't go wrong with Wadjet Eye games with the exception of Resonance which was pretty bad. All the other ones were fantastic, with the Blackwell series and Primordia being my favorites. They're really straightforward in terms of difficulty, but they're still not derived of puzzle solving unlike something like TellTale games (or Syberia back in the day).
 
Man I don't care what y'all think of the game
PnCs are games people play cuz they chill and offer a good romp and laughs.
Full Throttle does that for me and my brothers are gonna have a blast playing it during get together.
 
Last night I finished Broken Sword 5, and although I liked it for the most part, the ending was rather abrupt and lacking. I mean, how did they find
Eden
so quickly. It's like it's right there on a tourist map. Anyway, I gave it 3/5.

Next I will play Life is Strange. By the way, the whole broken sword series is on sale on GOG right now. (and also Gabriel Knight)
 
FULL THROTTLE ALSO CONFIRMED!!!!! Thing is both these games are only appearing on PS4 and Vita????

I wish they had a version of Full Throttle-The Extended Cut, as that game was too short when it first came out....but sadly with demise of the original voice actor for Ben (RIP) that will likely never happen.... : (
 
Just picked up Fran Bow and Broken Sword 5 since they are on sale on Gog. I went to Paris last weekend and it made me want to replay Broken Sword 1. Now that I have all of them I think it's time to go through the series. I've been buying a lot of games lately, but with lots to play, I think I will just spend the whole next year playing through my point and click backlog.

It's awesome that Full Throttle is announced for remastering as well. Expected but that is good news, I am excited to see how it looks. Day of the Tentacle and Grim Fandango look good so I think it will be awesome. It's going to be fun to play it on Vita. I'm listening to Legacy by The Gone Jackals now to get stoked!

Thanks, I saw that, too. Didn't help. I'm guessing it just doesn't like the cruddy integrated Intel graphix in my laptop. Might try again on different hardware.

I messaged GOG and they say Win 10 is not supported
 
Tizoc, there isn't a Full-Throttle Extended cut, its just a wish of mine that would be great if it happened! As the original developers of the game back in 95, must of seen one of the big criticisms of the game was it longevity was not not great....it was a game easy to breeze through, and as such this game is a one-hit wonder!! Such a shame because there was so much more they could have done with this franchise......
 
So Dropsy is pretty much the best point n click ive played since the Lucasarts heyday. I absolutely love this game. Honestly haven't enjoyed a PnC this good in over a decade

thats a whole other can of worms. The legend is an alternate version of the game was made during its development and it still exists in a closet somewhere. And the rumor is after disney bought lucas they approved a plan to bring it back to life.

this reminds me i should probably give this game a 2nd chance. I just wasnt expecting a game with no dialogue and couldnt get into it at the time.
