PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

Any opinions on the Raidou series? I generally like the MegaTen games.

2 is really good but do not go in expecting a story driven game. Its very much focused on gameplay. You don't just use demons in battle, but in towns and dungeons to find items and solve mysteries. Raidou has a gun but that is more for stunning, similar to Bloodborne. Your sword is the real damage dealer.

Also don't expect high production values, though it is still a slick looking game. Many times you will negotiate with demons to join you. Some ask you for money and items. You can also fuse your own. You move around a small combat area in battle. At first it may seem a bit pointless but later on you will find that bosses' attacks require you to be mobile, unlike a traditional turn based rpg.I never played the first.

So how would PS2 games look on a computer monitor using component cables with a RGB or DVI adapter (I don't even know if this is a thing)? Would it look better than just using component cables on my 50" tv? I figured that if it's on a smaller screen it would look a little better.

I used to use mine sometimes with a component to hdmi adapter that did straight analog to digital (YPBPR to YCBCR, no scaling) and it didn't do too great. Your TV will probably do a better job scaling and a much better job deinterlacing (if your monitor even handles 480i which mine surprisingly did), but you will likely get way lower latency on a computer monitor than a TV which is nice.

I played Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenaichi 2 last night, the first Dragon Ball game I've ever played and I really enjoyed it (once I started to understand the combat system). It was pretty cool how it mirrored what I vaguely could remember from the TV Shows too.

i guess this belongs in here:

Fair enough. Honestly between the PS1 and PS2 libraries, I doubt the PS2 will ever leave my set up again. My PS2 backlog is comparable to my Steam backlog, and there are way more games I want to add to said backlog.

DTL Test PS2 price watch- late January edition- still dry. One console only model for $250 which is a bit high and the rest are ridiculous.

i check every once in a while for the hell of it, so I'll just post my findings here. lol

I said so before, but I'd also advise checking various collecting forums' sales threads.

Good call for those looking. I already own one and just look them up on ebay out of curiosity every once in a while. I figure random devs who just wanna get rid of it would put them on ebay. Though maybe the ship sailed on that...

i assume your steambacklog is huge. i just want to find my r-type final and finish getting all the ships. (damn... where is it? i may have to just buy it again and another memory card...drat!)

Crazy I just picked up Shadows of destiny last week have yet to play it.

really one of my favorite gms on the PS2. it's such a sleeper.

this and re1 w/ multiple endings and a great story kept bringing me back=) if you ever get to it, post up your impressions =)

Got a copy of No One Lives Forever in the mail today. Always heard really great things about this, excited to try it out. Doesn't seem like it has aged well, but I guess we'll see.

I need to buy another PS2.

For no real reason, just because. GOAT.

I need a Slim V2, I got a slim Silver V1 shell and PS2 Phat... I need dat V2 baby.

I got a copy of Xenosaga II in that is pretty beat up. It plays just fine, but it's a 80 hour RPG and I'm not sure if it would be playable start to finish with some of the scratches I am seeing.

Would performing an ISO rip of it give me a sense of the kind of disc errors I'd get and if it would be complete-able?

It's actually like a 10-15 hour game (and it's for the best, IMO).

A rip should let you know if it's playable. I had a copy of Gradius V that had a pretty gnarly label scratch and I got a few errors when trying to rip it. Once I actually booted it up, it wouldn't make it past the first level.

Really?! The first 3 hours of the first game was 2 hours of cutscenes, and they trimmed the 2nd down like that? Is it no longer an RPG?

Dammit, I really hate that I was completely broke a few years back when GameStop was getting rid of new PS2 Slims for $30. My phat 2001 PS2 has gotten so old I worry of it dying, so I thought I'd check up on buying a Slim online and yep, price hyke up the ass.

still has long cutscenes and a better battle system/leveling system than the first. I think it has side content to push up gameplay time, but it's all fetchy stuff iirc

Okay, looks like I'm half right. After looking around a bit (it's been a long time since I went through it -- the first PSN outage IIRC), the game is actually closer to 25-30. There is, however, some leveling/skill trick that I remember using that cuts down on your playtime significantly.

Once you get started with the game, see how you like it. I wasn't really feeling it (and really wanted to get to EpIII which I thought was wayyyyy better and more realized than I or II) so I was cool with making the game a little shorter. My bad on spreading misinformation though. :)

oooh, i'll have to look up that trick. I, too, am interested in busting through it to get to 3.

try the rip and see if it's successful...
if it fails, depending the damage, there's a way to get rid of the scratches, if possible, can you take a shot of the scratches?

edit:
here's a sample of deep scratches i just buffed out a month ago
on a clear plastic canopy (but works on dvd/cd very easy):

Been playing Outrun 2006 lately (never purchased 360 version). Very impressed with PS2 version. Looks great, plays great and has a lot of fun modes.

My sons and I have also been playing Arena Football by EA Sports. The goofy trash-talking coupled with late hits and coach takedowns make this a nice alternative to NFL Blitz.

We have also been playing a lot of NHL Hitz 2002 and Marvel Nemesis. I'm not a fighting game person but I've always thought Nemesis is good fun. Really feels like superheroes throwing down.

Teknoman, can you post a shot of the damage under light?

depending on the scratch, i can recommend a solution. i don't want to post generic instructions w/o pics bc i found people in the past error and conclude it doesn't work.

but all you may need to spend is under 2 dollars or nothing.

These scratches are label-side. I'm fairly sure it's a done deal for these discs but I want to be sure.

It's a DVD so it should be fine. Label side is death for CDs or Blu-Ray but DVDs are a plastic sandwich with the data on the bottom layer of plastic and the reflective layer in the middle.

Made an ISO of both Xenosaga 2 discs, 0 read errors. Looks like the discs are good, despite label scratches.

Now to get more than 3 hours into Xenosaga 1...

Just grabbed my first physical PS2 game in 10 years! Last one was Gunbird SE iirc.
I'm not entirely sure Konami will work it with Sony to get it on PS4 and even if, I wanted to play it on a CRT and I despised the laggy version on PS3 (ps2 classics).

15€ complete, not bad I think. Now to see if my PS2 still works -_-

Sure, i'll take some different angle shots.
