Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc PC |OT| It's getting Steamy in here...

God, the font in this game is SO distracting. Are there any mods to change it? The word "promise" has such awful kerning that I had to stop and post this request. I can deal with the crappy, lazily ported Vita UI but ugly font in a text heavy game is so hard to ignore.

Edit: it's any letter preceeding an i. Saying, this, promise. It's so distracting.

you can change the font in the PC version.

I've said it before but I actually prefer the English VAs for a lot of the characters. Byakuya, Celeste, Junko, Monokuma and Toko off the top of my head.

I haven't heard her English VA, but her Japanese VA is Sawashiro, so I'd be inclined to disagree there. It took me a while to realize it was her since the tone and characterization Touko had was completely different than what I was used to hearing from her, and (chapter 2 spoilers)
both her moments as the meek Touko and the deranged and hammy Genocide Jack were well handled and fun to listen to.

Tried the extra game mode, and it's kind of a decent bonus feature quickly thrown together, but it plays too much like an old-school Flash game since it's all about grinding and not much else. I'm also sad we didn't get
both Junko and Mukuro in there, since I would've loved to see more of the real them rather than only getting Mukuro posing as Junko like during the main game.

Her VA is very good in English. Better than her Japanese VA too imo

I finished the game this morning, so here are my overall impressions. There are spoilers for the WHOLE game below, so please don't read unless you have finished it all.

I guess I'll go through on a case-by-case basis and then summarize my feeling at the bottom.

Case 1:
This was the only case that I did not successfully predict who was going to be killed before the murder happened. I actually thought as soon as Sayaka asked you to switch rooms that she was going to kill someone and you were going to have to overcome your friendship to blame her. Overall it was pretty obvious with the Leon spelled out, but I liked how it played out.

Case 2:
So this is where I noticed how easy it was to spot where the murders were going to take place, they typically load a few specific parameters in a room (like the boys/girls locker room) and it telegraphs where the next murder is going to happen. Then I figured Chihiro was going to be the one killed due to the repeated reference to her wanting to grow stronger. I didn't know exactly who the murdered was besides that it was a guy (after the circumstances of the room became clear during evidence collection) and that it wasn't Genocide Jack/Byakuya. It really didn't make sense why Byakuya was pushing that angle to me, he would have died along with everyone else if Mondo wasn't found out (I guess he knew it was Mondo, but still).

Case 3:
So this case sort of takes place in front of your eyes (or so the game makes you think). I made a note to myself that the other two cases happened at night, so I kind of figured something would occur during the day this time. I didn't really have a whole grasp on it until Celestia for like the fourth time in a row made another miracle discovery! I found the blood packets in the fridge pretty early on and pieced together everything by the time they found Hiro stashed in the suit. That said, I think this was the best case in the game because it was the most action packed. It used the school's layout the best and involved a number of different rooms (rather than just the 2ish in all the other cases)

Case 4:
I figured Sakura had committed suicide from the way she was on the couch and the fact that how the fuck could you kill her otherwise. It was pretty clear from the way she was talking before it happened as well. I still had to figure out how the room had gotten to that state, it was cool to have everyone think that they killed her at some point
.

Case 5/6/End-game:
As soon as the Garden appeared I knew something was going to happen there with the sprinklers and whatnot (I was excited at the thought that the man-eating plant would be involved but it wasn't :/). I think it was either right before the trial or sometime during the investigation where you find out about the small cuts, and that that instantly made me think of Junko's death. I didn't get all the details correct of course, I just knew she would be involved in the end-game in some way. I thought the Alter Ego intervention was a bit ham-fisted, I was hoping Makoto would actually die and you would get to control someone else because I thought there was a chance that he actually did it and Kyoko tried to disguise it at first or something.

As for the ultimate reveals... blehhh. I didn't like almost any of them. I had figured out at some point that there was a time skip, I thought it might have branched only back to when "The Tragedy" occurred. The whole rant of Hope vs Despair was pretty cringy. The world actually being destroyed outside was disappointing too, but I won't go into why it just is very similar to something else. I wish it went a more Truman Show angle where their lives were televised, but the outside world was normal.

As far as characters go, Hina and Kyoko were my favorite, probably with Mondo and Sakura following. My least favorites were Toko, Hifumi, and Chihiro, I really don't like the lack of confidence trope, it makes me want to punch things. Hifumi was atrocious excess and reminded me of everything I hate about that type of culture.

The music was pretty great, I liked the Main Theme and the trial music a lot. I really enjoyed that they had like ten different art styles employed at different points throughout the game, it didn't feel consistent but I liked the change-ups.

The gameplay was OK, I wasn't fond of the trial mechanics at first, but they grew on me a bit. Some of the mechanics are just pointlessly easy though and probably not needed, like the Hangman's Gambit. I don't know if I ever even missed anything in that whole mini-game. The "Daily" Life portion of the game was pretty boring, most of the character interactions there didn't do much for me and I didn't like how it was limited for each day who you could talk to. The conversations never felt like they had any actual implications into figuring out what was happening in the plot.

As far as games in the genre that I have played, I put this.... last. That is mostly just because I have only played the entire Phoenix Wright series and 999/VLR, which I both just think are flat-out brilliant in design, plot, and characters. That is a hard matchup. I am looking forward to whenever Danganronpa 2 is released on Steam though. I hope it makes improvements like I have heard it does.

If you don't plan on playing it I think there's something actually pretty interesting about the school life mode (which I looked up cause fuck no I ain't playing that shit) in that
the school life mode is actually the year of school that they all spent together.

I must be an oddball because I'd put the DR games on par with 999/VLR, with Zero Escape edging out barely and then Ace Attorney below. I like the Ace Attorney games a lot but there is just as much nonsensical asspulls and silly plotlines as these games. I think when one sets itself up as a fairly realistic (even with supernatural elements) series and the other as a zany super anime murderfest they really shouldn't have the same criteria of believability or whatnot. All the twists in DR work for me because...well, look at it. The premise and whole Hope's Peak/Ultimate Student stuff is so ridiculous and anime that all of the twists and turns fit right in. It doesn't betray it's own tone.

I dunno. Maybe I'm just an idiot and never see shit like that coming so it always surprises me and I love it. This shit ain't The Village.

Not to take this into a mudslinging zone or anything, but DR has too much stupid anime-tropey bullshit thrown in with the rest of the game that just lowers it a lot for me. 999/VLR do the serious approach to a visual novel type game better and have better twists. Phoenix Wright takes on the more zany, fun characters way better than DR; the actual mystery solving is about on par between the two, at least in the first game.

This leaves DR in an odd space in-between where I think it doesn't quite achieve the highs of either one of those other series.

The "Daily" Life portion of the game was pretty boring, most of the character interactions there didn't do much for me and I didn't like how it was limited for each day who you could talk to. The conversations never felt like they had any actual implications into figuring out what was happening in the plot.

The issue with making these conversations have actual plot relevance is that the writers have no way of knowing which, if any (since they're optional), players will unlock through their playthroughs. This means writers are better off keeping them as separate "get to know this character" moments to make sure the main plot can be solved on its own without hoping that players happen to stumble on the optional character conversations that will give them hints and clues to progress.

I mean, you could have a list of events that play after a set number of support conversations, but the easiest way to do so would be with minor dialog differences to accomodate different characters for the sake of not having to do a completely different set-up for the clue for each possible student. That'd be a waste, since players would only get to experience one out of each of those events per playthrough, wasting the remaining ones unless players are dedicated enough to replay through the game lots and lots of times just to see all the different character-specific situations.

If you don't plan on playing it I think there's something actually pretty interesting about the school life mode (which I looked up cause fuck no I ain't playing that shit) in that
the school life mode is actually the year of school that they all spent together.

I actually played that mode yesterday for quite a bit (31 in-game days), but after a while I just got tired of how pointlessly repetitive it was. Regarding your explanation, I figured as much since
having a single Monokuma that makes everyone go and build more copies of him made it painfully obvious that this had to happen before the killing game started. Too bad none of those weird Monokumas would show up anywhere during the main game though, since it would've made for a nice easter egg.

The
gender
stuff in chapter 2 is really saddening to see.

This game is firmly set in anime tropesville, and it isn't like there're any unfortunate implications in there at all.
Chihiro was a weak boy, so he pretended to be a girl for convenience's sake since stereotypical Japanese culture says weak boys are unforgiveable, but shy/feeble girls are a-ok. It's kind of sad, but it isn't like it was handled in a tasteless way or anything.

School Life mode has the most disturbing moment of the entire game imo

those who have played it and DR2 know what I'm on about. gives me the fucking creeps.

The font Pak file. It's the same format as the PSP game's font file.

You can either swap it with the font Pak file from the PSP fan translation or use the "Super duper editor" to put together a new Pak file with any font you want, together with adjustable sizes and spacing.

If I get a chance later I could give it a go and post the patch here.

First time playing Danganronpa, just finished it and holy shit what a fantastic game. Super looking forward to when the sequel gets released on Steam.

Upupupupupu

Could you just direct me to a working font.pak? I don't want to download the whole PSP iso just to rip out the 2 MB file, I will manage to update the Steam install on my own. :)

right, anyone got any requests for the typefaces? any fonts you guys want to use on the PC version? I'll make a whole batch.

Anyone released a waifu2x patch yet ?

Just anything that doesn't have massive kerning issues.
Can even be Arial. I don't mind the typeface all that much, but kerning I can't stand.

Yeah, the few examples I've tried don't have that issue. I'll upload a few along with examples. Just currently unpacking the fan translation to use as a base for further replacements and its taking aaaages.

Awesome, man. Thanks so much. How about Apple's San Francisco font? Just like the Apple TV uses.

in lieu of me being able to get decent results with this, the guy behind the software above shared their completed font replacement (font from the original fan translation) on the steam forum. The font.pak file is here:

http://puu.sh/npbru/302031e4e7.7z

replace the existing one in dr1/data/us/font with it using HLM explorer.

some screenshots (4k sorry, so in quotes) I just took:

significantly better than the default font imo. If you don't like the trial font, you can replace 0002 and 0003 with the original files and recompress using danganronpa tools.

That font pack looks so good. I also got annoyed with the default font in the game looking all wonky. I'll try to apply it later, thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Which program specifically do you use to replace the font files? I tried this but I'm having a little trouble: http://www.indiedb.com/games/hotline-miami-2-wrong-number/downloads/hlm-wad-explorer

I was able to use the program to find and replace the font.pak file. Is that the only thing I need to replace? The 7z file linked earlier also has a Fonts folder with a few more files that don't have exact matches in the dr1_data.wad. For example, I can't find a file called 0.tga in the wad. I tried to Add the file instead of Replace it and HLM WAD Explorer crashed.

Also, once we're done mucking around, do we have to save one of those patchwad files or is there a way to fully replace the existing dr1_data.wad file?

You are using an outdated version of the app. Not quite sure what you're doing with the tga file either...you don't need to mess with that unless you wish to compile your own font.pak.

Instructions:

1. Download latest version of the explorer here: https://github.com/TcT2k/HLMWadExplorer/releases

2. Select your base wad (Dr_data1)

3. Navigate to this folder: dr1/data/us/font

4. Click on font.pak. click on replace in the menu bar. Replace it with the modded font.pak file I linked to above. It should now be listed in bold.

5. Click on save as. You are now saving a patchwad file, which is basically a patch for the initial wad.

6. Click on merge wad in the file menu bar. Select your base wad and then the patchwad. Say yes to backup if you wish to revert at any point (up to you, I personally wouldn't bother) and apply patch.

Done.

I'm at Chapter 5 Investigation, and...

I just found the arrows and the bloody duct tape in the locker. That reminded me of...

OH SHIT. NO FUCKING WAY.

What do you mean? Unless you just worked out a twist...

Reply as a spoiler!

Chapter 5 end:

Nevermind, I just finished Chapter 5 and it was nothing like what I had in mind.

What happened instead though, WHAT THE FUCK.

Hahahaha I was expecting that reaction. Good, good.

I absolutely can't wait to see how people here react to DR2. Oh boy
