Oxenfree |OT| Alle Alle Auch Sind Frei

Iirc, it was Telltale who introduced timed dialogue and it was considered "innovative". Since then, it has been popping up in more and more games. Now, if i thought it added anything remotely interesting to a game, i would say that developers are just copying a good idea. But i consider it a gimmick, a bullet point that modern "adventure" games desperately need to have not to be considered classic or old fashioned. Take Firewatch for example: a relaxed and beautiful setting, gameplay focused on dialogue and conversations (with one person) and yet the gamer isn't allowed to read the dialogue options at his own pace? I don't see the point at all.

That being said, i watched a video of Oxenfree and timed dialogue seems to make at least a bit more sense since the conversations involve multiple people. So it's more of a group conversation. And the dialogue choices are very clear and short. So i might actually try this.

No, it happened at least as early as Alpha Protocol by Obsidian.

I really, REALLY liked this game, but figured when I finished it I probably wouldn't go back to it for a long time, if ever. I definitely didn't think this was the kind of game that would get a NG+ mode, but I am going to get back to it as soon as possible now.

so with all the positive impressions i decided to take the dip and bought the dynamic theme bundle. look forward to playing. though my backlog will get even bigger lol

This is still my goty so of course I'm going to try the ng+. I assume the update is free on the X1?

The only problem is, is was that long ago I played it I don't think I'll be able to remember how to prevent certain things from happening!

I downloaded this last night after being intrigued by the art style and game description in the PS Store. The Dynamic Theme is awesome. I don't really know anything about the game, hope that works in my favour. Gonna start it tonight!

Only had time to play the intro boat ride of NG+ and already I'm tingling at the possibilities and implications. I also love how enough time has passed where I remember the main things but some of the lesser dialouge things I've forgotten so I'm also getting this weird déjà vu thing along with Alex and that is pretty cool.

just finished this. unique, mesmerizing, & as enjoyable as any indie game i've ever played. do yourself a favor: buy it, play it, & be amazed :) ...

I bought this yesterday but NHL 16 playoffs conspired to keep me busy (OUR FIRST BANNER, YEEEEAHHHHHH!)

But tonight! I shall experience it! I can't fucking wait! Looks so unique and awesome!

Oxenfree is my GOTY so far.

Absolutely amazing game that everyone should buy.

I mean come on it's so cheap for

amazing narative
spooky as hell
amazing soundtrack
NEW SIDE STORIES ng+

come on just do it.

These guys really deserve massive praise.
Well I'm sold. Bought it and the dynamic theme. Sounds right up my alley.

Hmmm, I was trying to avoid watching clips and go in blind, but I should watch a few. I love puzzles in gaming, so I'm not sure this would be for me if there aren't any.

It's very light on the puzzle stuff. It's very much story/dialouge/exploration driven and it nails that stuff.

Played for about 2 hrs on the PS4 last night. Very enjoyable! It's getting 9/10 for me so far. I'm very impressed with the writing, dialog, and voice acting -- it is very well crafted and flows really nicely. The story is good, too -- entertaining, intriguing, with some suspenseful moments. Most of all, I like the characters and their interactions.

Thanks to whoever suggested I take a look at this game. It's exactly what I look to indie games for.

Are there extra/new achievements with the new content?

There are no new achievements on the Xbox one version, missed opportunity but I'm sure there is a reason behind it. I know on 360 MS used to only allow added achievements for paid content only.

I'm not sure about steam version.

Glad to see more people have picked this up on PS4, feel that it really isn't one that should be missed.

Just got to the
hangman/test bit
. NOOOOPE. Fuck all that. I'm not playing this game at night.

Movement is a bit clunky but I love the radio stuff. Just wish I wasn't such a coward.

Played it in one sitting yesterday on PS4. Took a little over 4 hours and it was a great 4 hour span. Man did this game have a hold on me. The atmosphere, the story, the dialogue, the characters...

Just finished my fourth play through (first NG+). I try to play differently each time but the one constant is I always get
Ren and Nona
together. It just feels right.

This was a perfect playthrough though. Was a dick to Jonas, befriended Clarissa,
saved Michael!
, and
exited the loop.

Does anyone know if the game changes further after the last spoiler above on NG++? I don't have time to play another round tonight but at least the first couple lines reflect that there might be new stuff again.

Is there any significant difference between the PC and PS4 versions? I'm trying to decide which platform I should get it on.

AFAIK just optional mouse controls and potentially better performance, though 99% of the game runs just fine and you might not even notice the few hitches.

First time spoilers, or NG+ spoilers?

Sorry man been busy. its more just overall discussion. Don't discuss the main story other than an overview of theme, no specifics given and the video us cut to show no real spoilers either. You know me. Thats the name of the game.
Instead its alot about art, the design behind the title, music, the voice, and how it all comes together.

Talking to the devs has been eye opening on how things all come about and what its like working on a title like this. Interesting game and interesting people behind it.

Also going to be doing a dev podcast/devcast with these folks next friday after they wrap up the ARG

Just wondering to (NG+ ending spoiler I think? Dunno if it can be gotten on NG)
exit the loop
do you need all the letters? I got them on my first playthrough at release but I haven't bothered this time and about to get through the point of no return and there was a dialouge option about them so I don't know if they are needed or not and I kinda don't want to travel around and get them all to get that ending I want.

I'm pretty sure it's only possible on NG+. I have the trophy for picking up at least four letters, but I only remember picking up two and only one of them seemed to be important (the first one, I'm pretty sure, which you find right outside of the store). Maybe that trophy is from another run, though I've never picked up more than seven at a time.

I'm not even sure any of the letters are necessary because I was given some conversation options at the end confrontation with information I don't remember picking up, but I went ahead with the one tree I did recognize so maybe that helped.

NG+ sounds amazing, and is exactly what I wanted them to add but didn't think they ever would. I won't be playing till I'm able to do it with the friends I originally played it with again (which won't be till October, unfortunately), but I'm going to pick up that dynamic theme and just be stuck thinking about it till then.

Ah cool. Well my NG+ ending was (ending spoilers, for both NG and special NG+ stuff)
pretty much like my first time through, made up with Clarissa, got Ren and Nona together except this time I also bonded more with Jonas so it seems like a better ending. Still didn't bring back Michael because I think that's just wrong. Then for the NG+ stuff I sent a message back to Alex saying not to come to the island and after the ending did the time loopy thing it moved on to 7pm of the night and them waiting for the ferry and deciding not to go after hearing the message. I'm curious to know how the other options play out, like don't go to the cave or don't tune in to the ghost. I assume things might be fine if they went to the island and didn't fuck with ghost radio? Might even get good relationship endings too in that scenario but I think it's best not to take the risk when there is ghost fuckery afoot.

Really liked the NG+ stuff. While a lot of it was the same, just enough was different to keep you on your toes and with it being a while since my first play through the whole thing worked really well.

I keep hearing that the NG+ mode sounds great, but I'm not understanding -- can someone explain what's great about it (without spoilers, of course)?

I played for another 90 minutes tonight. Good stuff. I'm probably about 3 hours in. The game keeps surprising me. Very interesting! I feel like it's not getting much attention, which is unfortunate. It's clearly a quality project.

Can't really explain without spoilers. Let's just say it continues the story in meaningful ways

I finished the game earlier today, so I have my answer now. Interesting. Not sure if I'll play it all through a second time, but it's nice to know there is lagniappe, if I do.

I really enjoyed this game. I have a feeling it's not getting a lot of attention, which is a shame, but not too surprising. It doesn't have exploding body parts, etc.

I found it very enjoyable. Well-paced. 5 hours, didn't overstay it's welcome. Good story that kept me interested throughout. Believable and likeable characters. The writing and voice-acting was excellent for a videogame, especially an indie. I really grew to like the artistic direction, too. I was impressed. 8.7 for me.

About 2 hours in. I love it, its like a telltale game but cooler

Adam Hines is one of the co-founders of night school studio and used to write for telltale. I believe he was involved in tales from borderlands and wolf among us.

They have a great team at the studio, I will be there day one for any new title they create.

So do you guys think, that this is a good game to play together with your girlfriend?

I made a note a few months ago to do so, but I have forgotten why. :-)

It's an excellent game for that! Go for it.

I finished the game yesterday and i'd say it's certainly a memorable experience. I'd probably rate it at about 8,5/10. I might even replay it sometime.

I enjoyed the presentation a lot. The artstyle is rather unique and very nice. The game looks beautiful at times. The soundtrack is original and a good fit for what they were going for. The voice acting is solid. All in all, quite an impressive effort for such a small team.

Gameplay wise, the developers call it a "talking while walking" game and that pretty much sums up the majority of the game. Don't expect puzzles and exploration, it's mostly a very linear story driven game with a focus on conversation and characters.

In the end though, the story and characters didn't grab me as much as i had hoped.
The supernatural stuff
started promising but didn't really go anywhere super interesting.
The time loops became quite repetitive and predictive after a while
. Since the game was, at the core,
a coming of age tale of the main character Alex
, i would have been more interested in less
supernatural and more real stories, e.g. the parts with the brother were nice
.

I enjoyed Oxenfree and i find it a memorable game. I also feel it's an impressive debut game from a new studio. I'll certainly be keeping an eye on what the studio does next.

ps. the game seemed rather buggy. I tried to experiment twice with doing what the game was not expecting me to do and in both situations i got stuck, with events not triggering anymore.

I nearly finished the game in one sitting yesterday and I'm sad to say I relatively hated it. I was so onboard before actually playing it that it hurts to feel that way.
The dialog choices being too fast really hurt my immersion. Then when all is said and done (barring some last minute twist) the plot is not particularly memorable. No puzzles and the awful walking speed killed it.
I'm annoyed at this outcome and at the fact I can't really put a finger on what went wrong for me where other walking simulators or narrative games worked.

I thought the dialogue being fast increased my immersion

You get to speak pretty much exactly the same amount of time as in a real conversation

Oh yeah I totally get that but you better be a native speaker / quick reader or else it becomes missed answer the game. Really hated that.

Goty contender. Just finished my second playthrough and had so much fun with it. Being mean to my friends was kinda hard at first, but some of the reactions and outbursts are priceless. Nona has some great moments.

Edit: So there's a trophy for
never speaking at all, but I'm pretty sure sometimes you're forced to choose a dialogue option. I assume I'm allowed to talk during these moments, right?

Apparently the only dialogue option you're allowed to do for that trophy is the last one at the very end of the game. For everything prior you shouldn't even use the square, triangle or circle buttons.

Just started a fresh playthrough (got to the ending last time but the game crashed and I missed the ending) and it feels just as great as it did the first time around.

I'm going to take my time and explore more of the dialogue options I think, I'm trying for a 'non-confrontational' path this time :)
