No Man's Sky - Early Impressions/Reviews-in-progress Thread

Wonder what the next game will be that creates this amount of hysteria?

These threads have been so much insane fun over the last month or two. I'm gonna miss 'em!

My biggest complaint about sending out code on/day before release day is how hard you have to push yourself to play the game and do your write ups in as little amount of time as possible.

Juggling a 40 hour job and family life is going to be hard with NMS, but I'm going to do my best to have a piece up within a week of launch.
Oh boo hoo.

The unsustainable model of rushing "reviews" out as fast as possible to get all dem clicks. Won't anyone think of the poor reviewers.

Obviously you haven't read through it, otherwise you would know the review is everything but clickbait.

That's totally irrelevant. The review itself could go over everything in depth thats currently in the game, and while most of it will remain, so technically it could be viable review, they still posted it prior, knowing very well there was a patch coming that would change and fix a lot of stuff, reaping the views and ad bucks associated with those.

If you think they did this out of the goodness of their hearts and not for an inordinate amount of clicks cause they were the first, then you're clearly blind to the practices of game sites these days.

EVERYTHING on the internet is posted for clicks. If that's your only criteria then it's time to shut down your router.

The game is not going to be a whole different one after an update, so the reviewer did a good job of describing what the game is about and where there is room for improvement - even pointing out multiple times, that these issues could be addressed by the update.

Edit: Actually this review finally made me click the preorder button.

They're not shortsighted though, they're just concerned about the future. One of my major concerns is that when I have a family and am on my deathbed, I would really like to grasp my great grandchild's fragile hand and pass him / her my PS4 and first-print physical copy of No Man's Sky. But right now, with this patch bullshit, I'm worried that the strain of knowing I'm not giving them the definitive version of the No Man's Sky experience will simply be too much, and my frail body will just give out and turn to dust.

I was always gonna wait for general opinions from players after a bit to decide if I should buy this, wait out for a sale, or skip it entirely, but now it's looking like that's the only option I'm really gonna have to gauge opinion of it, lol.

Some people still believe they could play endless hours in an living breathing in, when it is only a math generated boredom. Enjoyable for those not able to looking behind the math pattern.

Now is the the reviewer going update the site accordingly with a revamped review with the information that actually relevant for the update that goes up tomorrow before even the game's official release date? That remains to be seen.

I seldom ever see many review sites actually do this though.

It's funny that you replied with Everything is posted for clicks, because that's literally my same argument against people calling something clickbait. And I also did mention that the game won't probably change drastically gameplay wise. I understand that, but it doesn't change the fact that they reviewed a version that wasn't what the devs intended.

The fact that they say if it is drastically different then there's a big problem, is the wrong way to put that. What they should have said is, if it's drastically different, we'll revisit the review and point out what's better, what's worse, etc. Even though I disagree with the timing of their review, I would have slightly respected that. But naw, apparently they're fine with this one. What would have been a problem with a review in progress? Would have still given them that precious keyword and could have saved them from having to score a version of the game that's not meant for public consumption.

My beef isn't with the quality of the review, I understand it's a positive one, and kudos that it made you pre-order. As someone who's extremely hyped for this game, I'm happy to hear. Just the timing or the arrogance of their patch statement makes me believe they had no good intents about this review

FFXV

Been watching streams and honestly with that and the day one patch notes I'll probably pick this up after like three years of being 50/50.

Even if this review went up on Monday midnight, or Tuesday during the day with the new patch, I still wouldn't give them the click. Sorry, but such a huge game deserves time.

Also, holy fuck, arrogant much. Considering the game doesn't actually release until Tuesday then that statement go fuck right off.

The arrogance is to damn high..i am getting blind seeing this also so many pages already what the fuck?

FFXV and TLG.

Persona 5 will be praised by everyone you can bookmark this.

Eh, I don't think so.

FFXV has had like two demo's and lots of showings, it's a known quantity.

Last Guardian isn't going to attract people's attention either, it'll be great, but can't see it setting the charts on fire.

No I meant for thread meltdowns like this one, those two are the next big games.

618 replies for a single review?

People are being quick to reply with this, but it should be stated what a somewhat unique position this game's release has, with a massive day 1 update that is the creators' intended final experience. Obviously it's not about that single review itself but rather the situation of reviewing a game before it's intended "completion".

My thoughts exactly. A lot of people are downplaying the fact that this actually brought up an interesting/legitimate topic worth discussing as opposed to just people complaining/arguing about scores or something which I assume is what normally goes on in review threads. (But isn't happening here)

Hang on, sorry, have I fundamentally misunderstood how games on the PS4 work?

If this is a day 1 patch, when I buy it when it actually releases, surely I can't play it until it has patched, right?

This is genuinely the first PS4 game I'm buying that has a day 1 patch... do I have a choice? Can I refuse the patch and play the game anyway?

You don't buy many PS4 games I assume, as day one patch is very common practice.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

You can play the game without the patch, but it is recommended you download the patch.

If you are online, patch downloads automatically when you insert the disc. (you can manually stop that download if you wish so). If you buy a digital copy, patch is included in your download.
If you choose to be offline, you can play the game that shipped on the disc.

But what if the game still gets reviews lower than expected post-patch?

listen to the mad man
The reviewer's job isn't to protect Sean Murray's interests. They signed off on printing this version on disks. Implying that it's not ready to be reviewed only makes them look worse.

So by this logic, if there's a game that does not boot from disc, has a warning on it that says "internet connection required", and has a day 0 patch that makes the game work, it would be a useful review for someone to buy it 2 days early and post the review "Game doesn't boot at all 0/10"?

It's true that the reviews can only work with what they have, not what is promised, and I certainly don't think someone should pull their review because the dev claims the identified problems won't be present later on. I agree completely.

But the question becomes why should anyone read the review? As a buyer's guide? If the review doesn't represent the game they're buying, it isn't a useful buyer's guide. As a deep critical take on the game? A review that has obvious sentence structure, spelling, and grammar issues in the first paragraph based on a rapid playthrough of an advance-purchased copy (not even a review copy, to note) to be the first to print is hardly going to have depth for the ages. So, then, why read the review? You read it, so presumably there was something you were hoping to get out of it.

Reviewers are rightfully criticized if they have a pre-release review that praises a game to high heavens and servers are completely broken on launch. Because the review is not useful as a buyer's guide if it doesn't represent the experience the player will have. So presumably the reverse, where something is broken, disabled, or unfinished in the copy being reviewed but not for players, also applies.

The other thing I wanted to reply to is the idea that a day one patch is bad. You know this is a game that's going to get maybe a dozen major updates over its first year, right? This isn't deciding between releasing a broken game and releasing a working game, this is the reality that many, maybe even most games these days are constantly iterating on balance and content. I guess you guys missed out on Minecraft or something? Players should expect that the game they get is playable and honest about its status--obviously shipping a completely unfinished game and patching it a month later is unfair to people who were sold a pig in a poke. But this is a case of shipping an apparently finished game and then rapidly iterating on core mechanics before players even play it. Is the issue just fear that your console won't connect to the internet? I agree, games are becoming more "fragile" like that. But that seems a little abstract and big picture to pin on individual games.

I have no idea if this is a good game or not. I don't buy games at launch or for $60. But I am genuinely confused at this being a controversy. The blog gets the benefit of being the first to print by buying a pre-release copy. They also get the scrutiny of clearly rushing to print and also missing out on parts of the experience that day one players will have. Seems like a fair trade to me.

But what if the game still gets reviews lower than expected post-patch?

...Then it does? The world keeps spinning? Our point is that the thread is this big not because a review says something about the subject itself, but rather because the act of reviewing it at all before intended release and features are published, is up for debate.

A game should be reviewed in the state it's released in. It's totally unrealistic to expect a game to be re-reviewed after every update it might get, day 1 or not.

The day 1 patch isn't required for the game to run, an internet connection isn't even required to play, so it's totally fair game to review the release version.
