Digital Foundry - Marvel's Spider-Man 2 on PS5 Pro: How Insomniac Pushes RT And PSSR Upscaling

As someone who gladly bought and enjoyed the PS4 Pro, Sony has utterly failed to sell me on the PS5 Pro. I don’t know what could have made this more appealing - more power, a lower price, etc. Maybe both?

I really hope this changes as more patches come in and the gulf between standard PS5/Pro could potentially become more evident. Time will tell.

I would say id has with Doom Eternal and I'm not seeing 700 quid worth of difference in Spiderman 2 on the Pro
There really is no comparison when Spiderman 2 has full raytracing effects in an open world game, while Doom Eternal is linear and runs last gen consoles. Its the first all raytracing game, meaning there is no mode that doesnt have raytracing. The tech Insomniac is pushing is much more impressive considering it still runs well on a base PS5.

Ironically, the reason I'm not getting one is because pretty much all the games are available on PC. If I didn't have powerful systems at my disposal then I'd get one for sure, but in this case their PC port strategy has lost them a hardware sale.

I need my 144 fps (yes peasants, you can run games above 30 fps)
You need 1000fps to have the clarity of a CRT from 1980.

This is nothing. PS3 vs 360 and PS5 vs Series X topics were far worse.
Sure, but those were all brand new consoles competing with one another so it was to be expected to an extend. This is just a standalone midgen refresh, I just don't see why everyone's up in arms about it the moment it's mentioned.

For the most part, it’s just a select few who seem to be bothered by its existence, but not enough to avoid topics about it. I agree with you 100% mind you, but all one has to is look around and it’s the same usernames making the most noise about something that’s apparently “not worth it”.

Of course everyone isn’t going to like and that’s fine. I can get behind that. But, when the same folks have to throw out PC specs to try and prove a point, it’s no wonder we end up here.

You’re a supporter of the Series S. Think about that for a minute.
Got even 2 of Xbox series s for my goddaughter and my godson, I myself got Xbox series x, and waiting for stock to comeback to get my second one - galaxy limited edition Xbox series x, I also support switch, got steam deck, and rog ally x, GameCube, Dreamcast, xbox360, ps2, psx - but play mainly on my Xbox series x and my gaming PC. Just waiting for my new 42” Oled 4k 120hz monitor for my 2nd gaming station - already got 48” Oled 4k 120hz gaming monitor already. So with play anywhere, and games on gamepass and save sync I play a lot of games across multiple devices. But when I want to get best possible IQ I will always default to PC (if the port is not screwed), but usually PlayStation games this gen have zero interest for me (and looking at their sales volumes on PC I am in majority) I prefer to buy other titles on steam or gog.

So basically Pro improves on Spider-man 2 in many subtle ways. Very cool that fidelity mode runs relatively high frame rates. That's actually better than advertised.

I don't think of any of this. I'm just fucking around trying to prove a point of how ridiculous and annoying it is.

I'm a PC gamer, but I'm really tired of seeing this Pro vs PC debate in every damn thread. I'm trying to avoid comparisons at all going forward because it seems like every little thing triggers a mess.

Not like any of these PC vs console arguments are new. Rehashing the same old shit that's been barfed out for years now.

Completely agree. I love and own pretty much every platform, because they all have benefits.

But this shit is getting ridiculous.

The fidelity Pro mode DOES drop below the VRR range at times and the result is that it doesn't feel nearly as smooth as the Performance Pro. The resulting IQ advantages of fidelity are pretty subtle and not very noticeable during actual gameplay. Even if you're looking for them, they're hard to spot. Fidelity cool to check out if you have the proper TV but no question the Perf Mode is the better playing mode (coming from someone who has only played Spiderman games in Fidelity modes).
This would mean going below 28 FPS if it were true (at least in Spider-man 2 as the game is using LFC and VRR when you play in a 120 Hz container). I do not believe it is often at all… that would be an embarrassing bug come on…

How many Palestinian flags did throw around the city and patch in for this? At the higher resolution I bet they look extra crisp.

It’s been a while since I played it, so I’m happy to be corrected. No need to be so rude and blunt.

It’s not. Miles Morales had a 60fps performance RT mode. When the VRR update came out this mode could do over 60fps. 70-80fps was often the norm, sometime higher. The RT was cut down a bit and the resolution was 1440p-1080p DRS.

This is a result of people loading the FPS counter on their TVs without knowing that once you enable the 120hz mode the reading isn't always accurate.

It was 60fps locked in the non VRR mode, unlocking the FPS just boosted those numbers higher. TV panel readings are indeed inaccurate with LFC as the doubling of framerate will make any readings useless, but LFC doesn’t kick in above 60fps. Any panel readings between 60-120 fps will be correct.

Am I going blind or is the game starting to look dated, pssr or not?
As opposed to what? The only large open world city games I know of that look better are Cyberpunk 2077 and probably GTA 6.

Sure, individual things like random NPCs or cars are not the best, but it’s a huge open world game. Main character models still look top notch.

I don’t get why it keeps getting brought up. People who want to play on PC buy PCs. People who want the console experience play on consoles.

RDR2 still looks incredible.

So is the Pro Performance Mode running with same settings as Base PS5 Fidelity? This video is missing crucial comparisons against the Base PS5 modes to get a better feel of the performance delta and the actual "value" of the upgrade.
They must be rushing to try and cover every game.

I think they didn't went in more details regarding comparisons with base console because the Pro limitations would become more apparent. And they certainly already understood that milking content and hyping the Pro is giving them lots of views…

Nope, completely opposite. There are no good games on PlayStation 5 (imo), much broader choice on Xbox and with addition of gamepass for both their parents don’t have to worry about about buying new games for them. Choose the best option for them, PlayStation 5 was never consideration, for them or for me and so far I have seen I have made the right choice. (And yeah. I have played Spider-Man, god of war, the order, until down, Detroit, driveclub, death stranding, uncharted, TLOU, days gone etc on my ps4pro last gen, haven’t finished any, bloated boring games - imo. - this gen I haven’t seen anything much different, so simple choice for me). Why would I punish kids with PlayStation 5 and such a limited game choice?

This reads like it's been written by someone whom should not be given the responsibility of godchildren

If this post had any bit of truth to it the Xbox would be dominating right now

Doom Eternal is the best example 'I've' seen of Raytracing in a console game but that is just my view. I'm not that impressed with Spiderman 2 on the Pro it's not a big jump over the already impressive base game.
So far only 2 games have impressed me

You should check out Metro Exodus. Pretty impressive RT feature set for the base consoles.

I have it but Doom Enteral was the one console game where I could see the ray tracing and where it was of decent quality and the game was still smooth. I should also give more credit to Avatar as well
