Gears of War: Reloaded - Reviews Thread

There are a lot of people who say this about remakes, such as Halo Anniversary and the 2018 remake of Shadow of the Colossus, but I have never felt the changes were that significant and detracted that much from the experience that I would ever miss from the original - until now. Gears looks different enough that it's a generic version of itself. It won't stop me from playing or enjoying it, but it's definitely a negative.

Only the lack of Wander's degradation bothered me in the 2018 remake, I loved the art otherwise - and the change from foggy brown to lush environments was a positive IMO, since it further drove home the point that there was something more to the Forbidden Lands than the name would suggest. The colossi were living mostly peacefully in nature without humans.
Totally. I don't know how this shit gets out the door without someone going "it looks kind of flat!"

I don't want to say it's a lack of talent by the devs, I could never do what they do, but someone up the chain is not signing off on good visual decisions. Textures and geometry look completely fine but there is a total mishandling of the lighting and shadows. I see this in the new MGS Delta – the shadows have no depth in the environment but oddly enough the character does. All they need to do is crank the contrast a bit and it wouldn't be as bad.

I'll also say a lot of new games seem to be allergic to any kind of mood lighting. Someone working on Gears should have noticed how clean the air looks. Why are the skies blue? This world is completely fucked but it doesn't even feel like it.

Maybe they're trying to clean it up for mass appeal, or maybe they're working on a movie adaptation or something and they want the visuals to align with that, that's all I can think of.

Didn't the original have split screen? Looks like this is online only for co-op.
Supposedly it has split-screen co-op, at least that's what I've seen online. It better, because I've got an Amazon delivery coming and the whole plan tonight is beers, smoked baby back ribs, and running the campaign with my son

While I do prefer pretty much close to everything about this game in general over 4 and 5, it just plays like ass. I've been in it since the beginning, but as people say: Nostalgia is one helluva drug. The jank is just insane in MP.

This is fucking great so far on the Pro. All I asked for at most was good trigger feedback and they brought it in spades. I've creamed my jeans already. Killing Locust feels finally the way it should be.

Thanks Sorny.

Please tell me that Microsoft plan to release all other GoW games with this treatment on PS5?
This is fantastic.

Man it's the original Gears of War 1 experience all over again, including glitched trophies and supposedly a glitched seriously trophy as well. FU @ the coalition!!!

I think most of the damage was done with the Ultimate Edition, and they just worked with what they had as a base for this release. Still, you would think they would try and keep the identity of the game more intact. I sure hope E-Day sticks closer to the original art style and bleak ugly feel.

I'm so bummed. I didn't read into reviews at all on this thinking it'd be an easy slam dunk.

I've tried everything and can't find any matches on ps5 for any game mode.

People out here complaining about MGS3 Delta remake for no reason and then there's this game sliding under everyone's radar and it just flat doesn't work.

Fuck the coalition. Bum bitches can't get anything right.

Oof bought this for PS5 Pro. Within 5 minutes I was bored and didn't wanna play it anymore. Should've just kept my 360 memories.

Yeah, I still hate the aesthetic changes in this remake.
I've been slowly progressing through the campaign, but once I finish it, I'll continue playing the original 360 version for future play throughs, as I have done all these years, since it runs at 60 fps on the Series X anyway.

Dom's AI in single player is atrocious. At the first Berserker encounter, he was always walking towards it like he wanted to hug it. He died 5 times at the hands of the Berserker before I could get him to follow me somewhat.

Having a great time with the MP on PS5. I'm familiar with Gears gameplay having played them all, but I suck at it, so turning off cross play feels like a bit more of an even playing field to me. Although there are the odd few players that are clearly very well versed in it's mechanics.

Really enjoying on my Ally X, does not play well with UW resolutions, the chracter model is right at the bottom of the screen. Looks ugly.

I spent some time with the game. I'm not happy with how the old dark atmosphere and characters have been washed/polished, but overall the visuals and asset quality absolutely look better than i expected, and they've embellished it with some new cool reflections.

No doubt that E-Day will be glorious.

Looks like you bumped up the contrast. Didn't look this good on my PS5.

The rain and the Krill will forever remain better in the original X360 release, but otherwise, Gears Ultimate, now in Reloaded form, is one of the best remakes ever made. Am absolutely great game, forever.

The arrival of Gears of War on PlayStation 5 marks a milestone in the video game industry.

I finished it on its release date on Xbox 360; I never played the rest of the games because of the red lights on the Xbox 360.

I bought the game on ps5

Just earned the platinum trophy today. There's literally zero chance I'll be playing E-Day. The Coalition is one of the worst studios out there and they won't be getting another dime from me. What an abysmal PoS that game was…

Seriously...

Why ? Can you explain ?
So first of all, the maps are just crap compared to the original Gears of War. No rain on Bullet Marsh, Subway or Mansion. On Mansion they replaced the lighting with daylight, which completely destroyed the atmosphere. On Bullet Marsh there's only the old version, not the vastly superior Gears of War 3 version. Instead, they went and changed the sniper rifle so there's no active down anymore. Basically, they took everything that was bad from Gears 1 and Gears 3, but stayed away from the good updates.

It lags like crazy, sometimes people teleport around like nuts because the connection is so bad. Dedicated servers? Keep dreaming.

No server lists is also pathetic. The game is selling literally zero copies, which was obvious from the start, but then why not at least add server lists? Just imagine how dead the game will be in two months—without server lists you'll never know if anyone is still searching or not.

The spawns on the maps are absolutely inexplicable.

The punishment for quitting is totally irrelevant—the number of people leaving matches early is absurd. Sometimes we start with 8 players, and after a minute there's only one left on the enemy team. That could be fixed so easily if The Coalition knew how to make a proper multiplayer game. For example, they could just drop three rank levels for every early quit. Or give people a ten-minute timeout. But The Coalition simply can't pull it off—they're not Epic (from back then).

Then there are all the usual bugs we already know from Gears of War 1. If they're just hiring interns to do the port, they could at least involve some AI to finally clean up these ancient bugs.

The campaign was okay, but even there the atmosphere is missing, because The Coalition thought the game had to be bright and colorful now.

All in all, just a cheap cash grab by the studio, taking all the bad parts of Gears 1 and Gears 3 without caring about actually delivering a great product for the fanbase.
