Sony updated the original article today, update rolling out tomorrow:
Update on September 16, 2025: The PS5 system software update is rolling out globally, starting tomorrow. To update your PS5 system software, go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.

Additionally, users can enable the Power Saver option via Settings > System > Power Saving > Use Power Saver. Future updates for games such as Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Demon's Souls, and Ghost of Yōtei will include support for the Power Saver option
, with more titles to follow. Visit here to learn more about Power Saver.

Demon's Souls is always there, showing up supporting any PS5-adjacent initiative this generation.

I wish Shadow of the Colossus, which is broken on PS5 BC, woulf have received the same level of support as well as one of those enhanced BC updates, allowing native 4K and 60fps.

On PS Blog for the next firmware update for the PS5, right near the end:

On the horizon: Power Saver for Games

At SIE, we are committed to Sony's 'Road to Zero' environmental plan, launched in 2010, which includes achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2040**. We are always exploring how we can contribute to these goals through our products and services.

With this update, you may notice a new option in your settings menu called Power Saver. When you turn on this option, supported PS5 games will scale back performance*** and will allow your PS5 to reduce its power consumption. If not enabled, or if games do not support the feature, the performance will not be scaled back and power consumption will not be reduced.

Future updates for games such as Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, Demon's Souls, and Ghost of Yōtei will include support for the Power Saver option with more titles to follow
. Visit the support page to learn more about Power Saver.

Lowkey confirmation of 3 games that will run on their rumored future handheld. Interestingly Demon's Souls is always getting updated...for the PRO and now this as well.

Sony making sure the title will be up to date once BloodBorne remake releases on PS6 day one i see 👀 (i have no idea about this lmao)

Sony is being sneaky as hell about this. They lying asses are making this about save the Earth, whereas we ALL know this is for their future handheld. Very very interesting approach they are doing. It's almost as if they are talking to the hardcore that "knows" without talking to us.

It's like the opposite of PS5 Pro mode. PS5 Amateur mode?

PS5: Hermen mode. For the planet!

Imagine if the Sony boss had the foresight to mandate all developers make a low power version of their game for the whole gen? It would be not just 3 games, but all of them.

So wait, can we manually run in low power mode and essentially know exactly how the game is going to perform on the handheld? Couldn't you take the game performance and back into a rough estimate of the handheld specs?

Yes! The thing that Ghost of Yotei needs right now is half the power. I'm sure it will look great :messenger_expressionless:

Why is this even a thing before the handheld comes out? Just have the devs start building for the handheld mode and never expose it till 2027. Which customer is like, "man... I really need to save the planet and my wallet by running my PS5 at half its power"?

WTF, Sony?

It's a bigger incentive for developers if all that additional effort on old games is open to play by actual consumers.
And we will be able to know how those games will end up running on the thing, I see absolutely no issue on this.

I don't see an issue either, but I don't get the end user incentive. Sounds like a science project to me. Why would a customer enable this mode? Who buys a PS5 to actively use half of it? Are there people out there actually looking to reduce their energy bills by cutting the PS5's consumption? How many dollars/euros would that even save?

Yep, lol. It actually pretty cool though.

I don't think Sony actually expects people to do it for that reason, they just need enough PR fluff to justify it when they can't talk about the handheld yet.

Ah yes, very exciting. Finally doing something to save the planet. Never mind those AI data centers consuming as much power as entire cities, this is how it all begins. And paper straws.

Anyone focusing on the environmental stuff when they know clearly damn well that this is being made in preparation for PS5 BC support for the PS6 Portable is just looking for something to be mad about, btw.

Exactly! We all need Digital Foundry to test all of these games in low-power mode so that we know 100% what the PS6 Portable experience will be.

The average energy consumption of a PS5 is between $15 to $25 a year. Are people really that hard up?
Do you realize there are other countries outside of the US where energy is way more expensive (especially taking into account lower incomes)?

But still Sony doesn't care about this, it's just that PS6 handheld will be too weak to run normal PS5 games

How expensive? Can you give me an estimate of the worst-case scenario?

I think this is a waste of time but at least it's the actual games running on the handheld and not play anywhere "this is an Xbox" horse shit like MS is doing

In Italy for instance energy costs around 2-3 times as much as in the US. Plus average salaries are 2.5‐3 times lower and the difference is even wider for specialized roles. So in reality energy costs at least 5 times as much for the average italian person.

But yeah, the power consumption of a console is not that significant unless you keep it on all the time.

We're focusing on what Sony is announcing. Happily announcing a power saving mode on a game is cringe as fuck. If there's an ulterior motive behind these updates they're not sharing, that's on them.

Serious question: isn't this thing going to be the Series S of Playstation, holding everything back next generation?
Depends if Sony will require 1:1 features parity with PS6 (co-op mode on a handheld seems not necessary) and depends on how much RAM it will have.

No. The CPU and GPU power will guarantee this will hold back PS6 unless Sony doesn't enforce parity. PS6 will be able to do good path tracing whilst this machine won't be able to.
