Ghost of Yotei |OT| Jin there, done that

Credits rolling. What a game. Absolute master class by Sucker Punch. Characters, story, gameplay, graphics. 10/10 for me. All time favorite.

Same, SP's best game. Really loved this. Glad they didn't fuck up the ending

I wish it was Oyuki as 'atonement' instead of Jubei but I'm still ok with it as is. Mostly happy it wasn't Atsu or the kid with some 'cycle of vengeance' bullshit message.

My biggest gripe is
Some of story 'beats' don't align with what's taking place on screen. Several times Jubei or someone else sticks around to 'help' me, which results in something bad happening….why? I'm absolutely destroying everyone on screen. Go home lol. In the first fight with Saito he didn't even hit me once but then cutscene shows me all bloodied up and exhausted even though I was thoroughly kicking his ass.

I actually kept restarting the 2nd half of the end fight because I was pressing the button to counter his disarm attack but Atsu wasn't doing it. Thought my R1 was busted until the cutscene played and I was like ohhhh…bummer they have to force stuff like that to get their story beat in

Other than that, absolutely phenomenal game

Got the platinum. Kinda sad it's over. Liked it a lot.
Not sure if it's just me, but this was one of the most fun Platinums i ever had to work for. Instead of boring stuff to do, you actually feel like it's mostly about exploration, doing side quests, etc...it was really fun.

Finish after 36 hours.
Someone said that Yotei was like smash buttons and I was WTF?
But now I realize i finished the game using only the katana (Tsushima I was changing stances all the time), so I kinda agree, square all time playing in normal , and parrying hopping it work .

the amazing part of the world designed is that it still mostly check boxes like ubisoft open world with repetitive missions but they tweak each one just enough or slide 1 in between that surprises you to make things interesting. GoY is quit literally more of the same of GoT but with most issues fixed, I can see people criticize the game for that.

I've only been playing for 4 hours, and I've realised I really can't be bothered with side missions in open world games anymore. It's just all so predictable.
I've done a few at the start, to get the feel of the game, but now that I see that the gameplay loop's the same as in the first game, the illusion's broken, and I don't want to do them anymore.

I did 2 altars of reflection to get the roll and the perfect parry, but that's it, I'll try to avoid them for the rest of my playtime. I really wanted those two skills, but I can live without the others. If that's the way we'll be getting all of our skills, that's really bad. I buy a map for an altar, mark it, sprint to it, bow, and get my skill point. That's it. Unless they start including actual challenges later on, I really don't see why we, instead of buying maps, couldn't just buy the skill points outright?

I've tried some free roaming but the map, like in GoT, is very samey, and there's really not much to see that could pique your interest. It's grasslands, rivers and mountains, with easily noticeable camps, groups, and other points of interest. You just know you're not going to be surprised playing this game.

The game also looks exactly the same like the first one. I've replayed Tsushima this summer, and remember it looking exactly like this. I don't want to see comparisons, because the first impression is what matters, and the first impression with Yotei is: yep, this is Ghost of Tsushima alright.

The important cutscenes are still ok at best, while the smaller ones are as rough as they were in 2020. Playing through the intro and seeing a few other "bigger" cutscenes later on, I just kept thinking how it's not even close to something like TLOU 2.

Having said all of that, the gameplay is still tight as hell. I keep going out of my way to fight thugs, the same thing I did in GoT. I've increased enemy aggression to lethal (everything else at hard), and even this early on, it's really fun to fight.

Funny thing is that I could easily say all of the above for the first game as well, and it's still one of the most fun open world games I've played. Which means I still have high hopes for GoY, and I still believe it will outdo the first one.

My only issue with the story is I wish they went harder:

I really wanted to kill The Kitsune and I wish she would have after using her for help to get better. I get she changed and wanted to change her mind at the last minute but who gives a shit? She changed her mind to late and she still participated in the killing of her family.

Finished this some time ago. Being a huuuge Tsushima fan I think this is a worse game in almost every way except graphics being more detalied.

I really cant stand the main character, so unlikable and cringy.

The writing is crappy has hell.
One of the most stupid parts is when she has to hide her brothers child from the bad guy and hides her in their childhood home "because they wont look here because they think its haunted". Yeah, Saito´s gonna care about that. This was the best excuce they could come up with to have the final battle take place where it all started?

The game isnt true open world like the previews game, the different areas are walled in by forrest etc. In between these there mostly open fields with bandit camps shrines etc scattered. To me it makes the game feel less like a real world and more like a semi open world like the that part in Gears 5 och GOW Ragnarok where you basically just check every corner to make sure you didnt miss anything. Makes exploration feel less organic and more like a chore to me.

In some areas the camera zooms out and give you this wide shot when you´re on your horse. It was cool for 30 seconds in the opening sequence but its bad for gameplay. Turning the camera or your horse is really slow so exploration is more of a chore than rewarding in those areas. It cant be turned off either.

The anu part, omg that was freaking terrible. In one section of the game you travel across the part of the world were the anu live, and you get to do alot of fetch quest and other boring stuff that has nothing to do with the main story, and you get alot of forced lectures about the anu way of life and how they live in harmony with nature yada yada.

I like how the fox dens are more varied, the wolf was a little fun and so was picking up and throwing weapons.

It was coherent to story thats true but doesn't change a fact he wasn't an interesting character
To be fair Ghost of Tsushima have a story miles ahead (not a masterpiece for sure but better paced). Ghost of Yotei is intriguing just for the first half? Then it's a continuous disappointment until the inevitable rushed mediocre ending but what you could expect from one of the writer of Dragon Age Veilguard 😞

I enjoyed it more than Tsushima, just couldnt care about Jin :d tough sequel was way too safe

The thing is, though the story is never fundamental but for the first Ghost it was somehow for my personal experience. Even the secondary missions are so irrelevant, there is a lot of stuff "off"in this sequel which stop me to enjoy completely like the first one. Only the combat is improved not saying the rest is completely bad eh but the whole experience seems a step forward two step back.

I've just finished burning incense on a graveyard with Oyuki and I'm not sure I can take it anymore. I'm just getting more and more bored the more I play.
And then I try to rush main missions and it gets even worse ... because they're horrible!

The cutscene transitions, the lifeless conversations, how ridiculously safe this sequel is ... It's almost unbelievable they've been working on this for 5+ years, reusing so much from the first game, and still being this safe. I am honestly baffled.

What do you think they should have changed about him?
Everything to be honest. Just don't like bland characters. Good characters: Arthur Morgan, Ezio Auditore, Joel, Ellie, Geralt, Max Payne. Even Kratos with newest Gow's, not very talkative but still not bland. Sucker Punch made imo good step with Atsu tough it was rather small step, not jump.

Not "everything" like in "everyhing" I suspect? Would you still have wanted him to be stoic and restrained? Another backstory? Would he still be a samurai?

I think Atsu is just an unsympathetic and totaly unlikable character.

He didn't need to be robotic to tell the story Tsushima told. Atsu is definitely more human, with occasional sharp language and visible emotions.

The game itself was gorgeous. Soundtrack was absolutely s-tier good.

But damn the narrative was an absolute waste. The end to me absolutely sucked. Story beats unearned (and hilariously forced). Rushed 2nd half of the game. Just. Damn compared to the first one (which is no masterpiece either, but the character of Jin had so much more depth). Atsu had very little. Just all of a sudden
I have a family I'm okay being a mom now…. Completely unearned. And the change was so fast. Like a switch.
.

That whole ending sequence brought a sold 8 experience down to a weak 7.

Great concept, but their writers didn't know how to execute on it.

My problem with the story was that all the yotei 6 sucks absolute ass.

They are either dull, generic mustache twirling villains with no depth or just downright losers.

The kitsune was the less shitty one but her cliffhanger was predictable after a certain point.

The big boss has like one cinematic where you can kinda sympathize but then it turn into the most generic asshole possible.

If you make a story about 6 villains, you better make them memorable, because atsu is not exactly a great protagonist, just a bit less boring than jin but hardly good on her own.

Another thing I've realised, now 30 hours in, is how there wasn't a single memorable mission in the game.

I've only killed 2/6 Yotei, and the main missions are an absolute slog. There's really nothing happening in them. You're usually following some clues about the villain with a companion, chatting, and fighting along the way. They're not really distinguishable from the side stories.

I just started NG+ even if my backlog "playlist" is full of titles, old and new, because while I'm not a trophy hunter by any means, I'm only two away from platinum, and the other one (basically "this is Sparta!") was pretty much impossible to get as I've cleared the map of all but random enemies appearing on level ground.

...and to my surprise, on base PS5 there's now both 40fps RT mode, and VRR unlocked (with LFC). It doesn't make a huge difference, but the lighting especially indoors can look much nicer, and the VRR toggle makes it palatable on an OLED. I don't know if this was widely publicized, but if it was, I missed it. I doubt I'll replay the game completely, but so far having fun. There are more enemies in any given encounter with NG+, but keep them coming, I'll mow them down. Also Settings -> Accessibility -> turn on auto loot. So you don't have to individually gather everything from enemies once a fight ends.

The game is just terribly written and Atsu is such an unsympathetic character.

In the opening sequence some bandits are standing around throwing rocks at a horse and laughing. Like wtf? This has to be the most stupidiest, on the nose, way to show that those people are evil. In Dunkeys video he made it look like the horse was putting on a commedy show for them and they though he was funny.

I guess this isnt a spoiler, but I´ll hide it anyway:
In a sequence when Atsu and her brother are children they are in the forrest picking mushrooms when they see a wolf. Atsu decides to sneak closer to the wolf. Apparently that´s brave and not at all studid and irresponsible. Her brother is afraid, like any normaly functioning person with a brain would be, and she taunts him: "Can you imagine its teeth biting in to your flesh".
Like, what a total psychopath.

In Tsushima Jin is driven by responsibility, self sacrifice etc. Atsu on the other hand just wants to weild swords because its cool. She´s just self serving. I also get the sense the writers think she is a cool person, thats how its framed.

People who call Jin 'bland' and Atsu an 'improvement' are perplexing to me.

Jin is a hero who cared so deeply about his people that he was willing to abandon the very code that defined them. His story culminates in becoming the enemy of the person he loves most—his uncle—not because he wanted to, but because he chose lives over tradition.

Meanwhile, Atsu is just a grumpy woman who is condescending to everyone around her. She doesn't earn the title of Onryō; the game opens with her already effortlessly mowing down everything in her path. She feels less like a character and more like a power fantasy written to be instantly validated. She was written for Redditors.

It's funny. I suspected this game was ass. And the longer it is out, the more that comes out indicating that yes, it is ass. I have always been a story and characters person. I care about gameplay and graphics as well, but it is the story and characters that keep me going back. Atsu sounds like a fucking cunt and I would not enjoy controlling that bitch for 20+ hours, no matter how great the game looks and how good the combat is. Screenshots and videos do impress, I will admit. I am glad I do not own a PS5. I would have been tempted to buy it at one point.

As McGregor said: Who the fuc* is that guy? Too much sh*t in the same post mate

I remember being like that in my teens and 20s but I have learned that when I give things a try myself many times it's not as bad as it's all made out to be. In some games yes, in this, no

After I platinumed this game, I had to go back to Tsushima and get a platinum for that one too. Only the 2nd and 3rd plats I've ever bothered to get. But Yotei felt like a much more polished version of the first game, with better game mechanics.

Completed Tsushima when it released and played again on Pro and now 25+ ours into GOY. Is it just me or are the graphics just not impressive. GOT looked amazing for end of PS4 era but this is just bad in 2025/2026. I'm playing on Pro with the PSSR performance option.. Like it looks good on the surface, but generally the graphics to me should not be as rough/the same as GOT. Comparing just the graphics to Assassins Creed Shadows, it's like really bad.
