Max Payne 3 Review Thread

The older I get, the less I seem to care about review scores unless it's from some of my favorite game reviewers. I personally like the more serious Tony Scott approach Max Payne took but that's just me. Plus, if a 7.6 is the lowest score MP3 is getting, then that isn't bad. I can't wait to pick it up tonight and my CE of Diablo 3 tomorrow :)

As usual, watch the Gametrailers review only if you want to have half the story spoiled. And yeah with that disparity in score I'm guessing clickbait
Yeah, some big time spoilers there, but they laid out convincing reasons for the score they gave. Shame they just did another GTA type story instead of sticking with the Max Payne style.

It's a shame there's a dearth of humour, especially coming from R*, one of the few devs whose games have made me sincerely laugh at loud over the years. Still day 1 tho.
Yeah. That is unfortunate. Even GTA IV, which some people hate for being too serious, had plenty of little touches of humor and satire. Same with Red Dead. Strange they decided to play it so safe here.

And EDGE saying it's Rockstar's most conservative game. Definitely not the sort of complaints I was expecting.

It was something like...everyone who is on the screen of the person who activated bullet time will be affected by it, everyone else will not.

From what I've read, if you trigger bullet time, any players visible by your model within a 360 degree field also enter into bullet time. Same occurs when any player triggers it.
Thanks for the info guys. I always thought that would be something completely unfair for some players, but it seems that they found a way around that. :)

I don't understand Giant Bomb's inability for timely reviews...

It's really my only knock on the site.

Edge gave it a 7.

I almost get the feeling that some of the complaints are about it's linearity or seemingly the fact that it's a third-person shooter. I guess youtube commentators aren't the only people that wanted R* to speed up GTAV rather than work on this...

Games and reviews like these make me glad there is a used game/rental market. I'm going to rent it from Gamefly, but i'll be shocked if i find it as good as some of these reviews make it out to be.

From the CVG review

That's really disappointing. I mean I knew it'd be this way, Rockstar doesn't have the chops that Sam Lake does but still, they could have at least tried.

Wow. I just watched the review. I don't get why they rated it in that way.
Bullet time is more risk than reward, enemies become bullet sponges later in the game, the story isn't very good, and the cut-scene style sucks balls. That is all according to GT. Pretty clear.

My expectations for this game were for it to be a very familiar formula pumped up with modern day tech. It seems to be just that. Thankfully, I love these kinds of games so I I'm hyped to play it.

Not entirely surprised by some of the negative criticism in the reviews.

That edge quote was saddening to read though.

Oh well, I can enjoy the game for the cool euphoria action.

Why so serious, though? Remedy's Max Payne games were moody and hard-boiled, sure, but there was a surreal edge, and a tongue-in-cheek sense of humour. Max's tortured film noir metaphors were intentionally overwrought, and there were moments of brilliant insanity, like the trip through the Address Unknown amusement park. Rockstar's Max has none of this. They've stripped away all the subversive humour, and it has very little charm as a result. The first two games had hints of the supernatural and the mythic, and a dreamlike apocalyptic tone; all gone in favour of a straight tale of revenge and conspiracy.

Hmm.. that's exactly what I was worried about. The funhouse was easily the most memorable and interesting level in MP2 and nothing I've seen from MP3 seems to have any of the charm the second game had.

Anyway, great scores for the most part. Im definitely buying the game on the euro release date as Max Payne is one of my favourite series ever. Hopefully it will actually live up to the hype.. I thought GTAIV, RDR and L.A Noire were all pretty disappointing after all the praise. Never been a big fan or Rockstar though.

But a 7 from Edge is like a 8 everywhere else so...

True, or even like a 9 in some cases. The game looks pretty good to me, there is just so much I already have and am looking forward to that I care for more. It will be a good rent for me sometime this year.

Reviews are great. I'm gonna rent the hell out of this game (thanks to Redbox). Kinda wish there was more co-op MP. If there was I'd most likely have bought it.

Redbox only includes the first disc of the 360 version which is roughly half the game... I'd advise against that if you are going that route.

It's really my only knock on the site.

It's probably because they actually bother to finish the games and wait until it sinks in to give out a proper review on it. I don't mind.

I'm conflicted, the game looks generic as hell as a shooter, but it's pretty and dammit I love that Max Payne music... Nostalgia up the ass. Still I don't care a bit about multi and most of these reviews seem to say the story is lackluster, so I think this is a pass.

It does really make me want a Max Payne HD collection though.
