Half of those teams didn't even actually throw their matches though. The format put them all in the position of being punished for winning, which is why they all tried to throw their matches.

That's not really true. In at least one of the cases both teams were attempting to lose in order for potential matches later on. I think it was the China / South Korea match where this happened and both teams wanted to lose intentionally.

They changed the format this year to group play with the exact intent of having the better players eliminate each other early on. The players exploited the system so they only meet each other later on. I guess the badminton federation was angry that they exposed their stupid system. But whatever, pretty sure they'll go back to single elimination in the future.

that's not in the spirit of the Olympics either.

You can't throw your match if you win it.

Zabelinskaya is very suspicious. She's come from nowhere to be absolutely dominant. Apparently the IOC are testing extra thoroughly to find people who have increased their performance so well.

I mean a 30 second gap. And she never had an international TT victory all year.

I'm not saying she's a doper, but I'm saying that there's a chance. Innocent until proven guilty though, congrats.

Except you are saying that, only with a bit of pussyfooting around.

I hate when anyone throws the word doping around when they get beat, makes the entire achievement by the individual athlete a hollow one. Unsportsmanlike and plain salty.

The GB rowers beat everyone else by a country mile as well, and yet you're not seeing anyone call doping there. Strange.

Was it Arndt who was behind the team car? If so it will be interesting to see if she's deducted anything.

The pair dominated all season. Zabalinskya came from nowhere and that 2nd wind she picked up when she got bronze was incredible.

It's not like there isn't a precident for this kind of thing in Cycling.

Anyway, I wasn't saying she is a doper, just that her results are uncharacteristic, and that this is suspicious.

I'm not salty about the British not doing well, there's a fuckload of people that would have to be doping ahead of them to even get close to the medal lol

that's not in the spirit of the Olympics either.

Personally, I don't care much about the so-called Olympics spirit. If it's purely about having the best athletes in the world trying their hardest to win, the Americans would have 10 swimmers in every event, the Koreans would have dozens of players in archery.

The players were just stupid to tank so blatantly. They could've faked better or pretend to be injured or whatever.

If the Dream Team inexplicably loses a couple games in group play (like in 2004) and finishes 2nd in their group, you can be damn well sure nobody on the other group would want to finish 3rd. It's just much easier to throw a match in team sports.

But it's a problem with the competition format first and foremost. Those warnings are ridiculous too. Look what does ""not using one's best efforts to win" even mean? Sure they threw the match but it gave them the best chance to win a medal / the competition, in the big picture it was their best afford. It's not like anyone is entitled to see a good match.

Precisely it's just absurd to be quite frank and a very wishy washy way of trying to somehow claw back some degree of respect. In my opinion they themselves put the game in as much disrepute as the players. So they should be posting a note to those that make the rules with something worded similarly 'Not using one's best efforts'...how do you gauge that.?

I don't really understand why they continued after they were specifically warned not to do it. If someone knows what you're up to then the game is up (so to speak).

That's because it's clearly genetic modification. A disturbing performance.
Just drop it for christ sake.

Playing extremely bad or dumb does not equate to actual proof of throwing matches. Everything is speculation.

I mean everyone knows they will be in better spot to advance if they lost.

But I think there are no written rules (correct me if i'm wrong) that just because they play like club level players they can be disqualified just by looking suspicious.

The only thing to blame is the format and that's why they are changing next time round.

The judges decided. It wasn't just some guys off the street, so let's take their experience and skill in judgement ok?

And there is precedent for 'deliberate' losing - in snooker you can often get penalised for not trying hard enough to get out of a snooker situation and can be forced to replay the shot multiple times.

Btw, what are they planning to change? The pool layout is a fairly straightforward system that multiple sports use. Are they just going to alter the timings of the matches to avoid too much foreknowledge, or go back to an elimination system? I quite like the pool system really. Wonder if there is a reason that individual sports tend to use an elimination format, but team sports often use pools.

I love Lizzie Armitstead.

Interviewer "How was the race?" (she came 6th I think)

Lizzie "It was awful"

Fuck this 'just happy to take part' nonsense. She really wanted the win. She's gonna have a huge sporting career.

Yeah it's very stupid of them. If they wanted to throw the match, they could at least fake some unforced errors instead. What they are doing is an insult to everybody's intelligence.

So? I'm not complaning about her losing, I'm pissed off about our press bigging her up as a medal winner.

Olympic spirit involves being proud of your athletes and taking their skill level into account overall when talking about them and discussing them. Just because they fail to perform to their full potential on the day doesn't take anything away from them or their abilities.

You should celebrate what she did accomplish on the largest stage during the biggest race of her life.

They should do it like in Football. Final games played at the same time, and best position in pool wil grant you a opponent that is 'weaker' because he/she became second in her pool
