I don't know how the system works exactly in badminton, but something is wrong if the best teams want to lose in the last match.
Usually the best teams are at the top at the end in their group and will player weaker teams (in most sports with a pool-system).
They should all play at the same time + don't know who they will play next in the elimination phase.
Nothing wrong with the group system, not sure why some here are suggesting it.
The problem, afaik was caused because one Chinese team lost an earlier game which put them second in the group. If the other Chinese pair won their group they would have met in the next round. Not wanting that, they threw the game. The others saw this and also wanting to try and avoid meeting one of the Chinese pairs (1st & 2nd in world) then tried the same.
Straight elimination would have avoided this but so would apropriate sportsmanship.
