Mckayla Maroney is almost a lock to win Vault, and Aly Raisman is a contender for gold on floor. Aliyah Mustafina will probably win uneven bars, and I have no idea about beam.

As someone said before. It would have taken the best floor score of ANY girl so far this year for the Russian girl to win. While she was good she was not THAT good. The result was deserved imo.

Latin America has never had a strong showing in the medal table besides Brazil and Cuba. Mexico is actually already doing much better than we were at this time of the competition in Athens and Beijing --in fact, most pundits in the country only foresaw three medals tops for us at these Olympics.
They are consistent. I especially like the bball talk of banning US professionals or getting rid of Olympic ball all together because no country can compete in that lane with the States. Spain and Germany are the only threats to not lose by 30+.
That said, China is going to broom the competition today. At least three golds.

Guh, this is the second time today NBC has talked about Missy Franklin and Justin Bieber. Show me something else or talk about someone else for once, cripes, I don't fucking care. Allison Scmitt has had the better Olympics, too, and she barely gets mentioned.

Swimming is fine but there is just too damn much of it and too much overlap between the events. That's why you see the same people(like Phelps) over and over again. For example in track and field it would be pretty much impossible for someone to win 3 separate individual races.
As for swimming's popularity I'm sure a lot of that has to do with how dominant the US is in it. How much coverage does an event that US is historically shitty in, for example weightlifting, get?

Looks about right for a teenager, and pretty mild compared to some fencing women, (not talking about the Korean) the final between the two Italians had a lot of whining.
Solid routine. I would have been nervous if I wasn't watching a re-air. Those landings were rock solid aside from a tiny hop on the last pass.
They were bronze in 2004 in Athens, even with Lamar Odom on the team.
about to go to the club in a bit....but will leave early, maybe around 1:20am...just to make it home to see these women compete.

edit- damn shame I don't know much about the U.S. Women Representatives in the Heptathlon.
I came across Hazel from that Neymar commercial they keep showing a few weeks back. And Jessica is just a Doll. But fierce.

On of the best competitions in track and field in these games, the women's heptathalon is starting today. It should be a great battle between GB's Jessica Ennis and Russia's Tatiana Chernova.
For those who will be watching I suggest having this site handy as it will really help you follow along. Basically it tells you how well an athlete is really doing since all the athletes have their strong and weak events. For example if Chernova is losing to Ennis by less that 200 points at the end of the first day she is basically wining since she has her strongest events on the second day.

Ummm a lot do. At least almost all the high schools in my area have swim teams. Guys only though.

I don't know if any US stations will carry it live...so I'm just going to rely on NBC Sports' Olympics website live streams.

Most schools no but some do. I was actually surprised when talking with people in college that had swimming as a requirement in high school which just seemed really odd to me. One came from a high school with a pool that had an olympic swimmer at the time so it certainly would seem to help in that regard.
edit: I just looked her up, Tara and her sister Dana Kirk. Same high school that gold-medalist Nathan Adrian went to.
Because US' best ballers didn't actually go. Young as fuck Bron and Melo (neither of which had a dependable two way game or way to create their own buckets), prime Duncan and AI, and Boozer were the best players on that team.
Sounds like a bronze caliber team to me.

For such a big girl Chernova's pb in shot is really weak. I have a feeling she'll have a breakthrough and if she does it will put tons of pressure on Jessica.

She (Ennis) is one of the most celebrated athletes coming into the games for GB. It will definitely be on BBC 1. Its one of the biggest events for GB in the entire games.

Anyone have a site that compares medal counts for the two Olympics 2008 and 2012? Would be nice to have a chart that shows how each country would be doing if all the events were held in the same order. Not sure if such a thing exists.

Olympics generally go in the same order. This site might have what you're looking for but it's only for the big 6 countries.

Finn class rowing today will be interesting. The two leading boats got in a verbal fight yesterday and are almost neck and neck before the three remaining races.

Is Women's Gymnastics pretty much the only Olympic competition where it pretty much favors youth over experience? It was nice seeing Gabby win and all, but I can't help but wonder what it does to a lot of these girls mentally when they don't win since they're usually the ones who are most notably in tears.
