I like the guy on the far left who keeps plucking along, despite not being able to clear a single hurdle.

fake edit: And Missy May and Walsh are on NBC, holding hands the entire time.
Lesssssbianssssssss

I don't see why you should be much more skeptical of the guys in track and field than swimming or cycling.
Plus they're at sea level and keep talking about how blazing fast this track is. The tech in making these new tracks gives the runners an advantage over previous years, yet world records are not falling.

Other than the cannabis guy, has there been any doping infractions this olympics?

There might be new ways to cheat/mask testing and doping is probably never going to be eliminated, but considering that track records are not getting beaten, it seems like the IOC has a handle on the doping situation.

Again some people here are assumimg China doesn't have any more medals coming outside of their "vintage" disciplines. There are still the walking and hammer throw events where they have a shot at Gold in athletics. Everything is still open.

I still can't get over Yelena Sokolova's jaw. Does anyone know if she has some sort of official abnormality or what?

Really happy that Japan got some gold medals afterall, and in martial arts in that. Too bad I missed the fights cause of time difference.

Track and field world records are rarely broken at the Olympics. They're much harder to break in general than swimming world records.

To me it's not strictly about WR being broken.

It's about Bolt destroying the competition. It's about the entire Jamaican track team, men and women being SO strong. Have they always been so historically strong?

It's about 30+ year old woman suddenly posting personal bests, and competing with 20 something's.

Being at sea level is a disadvantage for track. Also it is too cold for the athletes to perform at their absolute best.

But would a country like Jamaica have means to come up with drugs able to beat all these sophisticated drug taste? I would level something like that on China or the USA before Jamaica.

Track & Field is like the national sport in Jamaica. When Usain Bolt won the 100m in 2008 people in Jamaica celebrated as if they had won the World Cup. So it's not a surprise that they are so good.

You should watch this doc: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UB_ZQfxXbTc

Jamaica have had a long history of producing excellent sprinters. You've never seen Cool Runnings?

Yes. Well, yes and no. A lot of great sprinters were born in Jamaica, Haiti, Trinidad, etc. and immigrated to other countries, such as Canada, where they found great success. IIRC, 3 of the 4 4x100 medly winners for Canada in Atlanta were born in Caribbean nations and immigrated to Canada. Donovan Bailey, for example, was born and lived in Jamaica before immigrating when he was 11 or 12. Further, Jamaicans largely descend from West African countries like Nigera and Ghana. So there's a genetic component, a sprinting culture, and a history of producing world class athletes that's made Jamaica an excellent sprinting team. Their current success is probably a bit of an anomaly, but they are a world class sprinting nation and have been for quite some time, even if they haven't been so dominant in the past.

The tests may be sophisticated, but if they are not frequent or the athlete has forewarning they are essentially useless as one could use primitive PEDs and never get caught.

There is a lot of speculation that Jamaicans are on SARMS, which have similar effects as steroids without the typical side effects: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selective_androgen_receptor_modulator.

Latest #NBCFail: After showing very brief highlights of today's events, they cut short Olympic coverage to subject us to the pilot of Matthew Perry's god awful show "Go On".

I thought my TV had demonically changed channels.

Being at sea level is a disadvantage for the sprints, but a huge advantage for distance runners. At altitude thinner air is easier to sprint through, but much harder to breathe. That said, sprinter's times at altitude are denoted as such, so any records have an asterisk and are not "true" records.

I think Jamaica's legacy in the sprints can be attributed to the track culture there. If you have the fastest man in the world running for you, you want to run with him and eventually try to beat him. There would be no Yohan Blake without Usain Bolt.

Usain Bolt is the last person I would suspect of doping. He has a natural and powerful stride that is unlike anything Ive seen from an Olympic runner before. I'm not going to say 100% that he doesn't. I'm just saying that I've never seen a sprinter before who looked more like someone who wouldn't need to juice.

I like Matthew Perry a lot, so I was fine with it. I enjoyed the episode.

Its alot easier to dodge drug testers in Jamaica than the US or Europe.

These guys trained for the bobsled team and bombed out, took up track to keep in shape and improve their bobsled starts.

I saw a Belorussian briefly that was pretty fine but I can't remember the name. Track cycling was a pleasant surprise in terms of the eye candy.

There's about 5-6 athletes in the track cycling for Belarus, it's on the BBC athlete database. But yeah seems sitting down, gives you that eye candy, who knew. ;)

Can someone explain to me why the USA media/team is so self-righteous about doping? As if one of their major sports didn't have a period where we can safely ignore pretty much every record because it's generally accepted everyone was doping?

I feel like you kinda answered your own question. Accusations of doping is known to get a reaction because of the history of it here, but was so common it's easy to just throw out there without thinking of the consequences or it being reflected negatively on the accuser much.

There are some people to be skeptical but only 2 Olympic records have been broken on the men's side (Usain bolt's 9.63 and Chen Ding's 20km racewalk). Same on the women's side - OR in the marathon and 100m hurdles. And I'm just talking about OR and not world records so I don't see why you should be much more skeptical of the guys in track and field than swimming or cycling.

Considerin over a 100 athletes were caught in the months prior to the olympics, you have to be pretty naive not to think that doping is relatively common in practically all sports. http://www.reuters.com/london-olymp...sters-nab-more-100-athletes-prior-london-wada

Why is there no replay yet for beach volleyball gold medal and Track and Field?

bullshit from NBC.

They already happened on the West Coast. Misty May and Walsh were great and adorable as expected :D

Now it's just been the new Mathew Perry show...It's been going on for a while now.

edit: Oh jeez Terrell Owens is even on this show. Still can't believe he signed with the Seahawks lol.
