"Is that a moorhen or a coot?". Looks like Adrian Moorhouse and Andy Jameson are from the Coulthard school of commentary.

Important update: Twitter has confirmed - and Adrian and Andy have reported - that it was a coot. I repeat, it was a coot.

The timing mechanism in the open water swim is brilliant. Each swimmer has a chip in a band on each wrist and as they pass under the timing mechanism, it automatically registers the time for each swimmer, so there are no boards to hit or anything like that. Wish they utilised that more in other events so that we could have the split times in the cycling, for example.

If you mean road cycling, then each rider did have GPS. It just didn't work because the massive amount of spectators using their mobiles jammed the signals... (or so they IOC said)

Any of Irish-GAF spot this on RTÉ last night?

In television terms lol means Live Online.

Anyone care to explain the story behind this?

The French participant was feeling a sense of disillusionment and ennui at the flamboyant theatrics displayed by the Spanish team and so took it upon himself to dish out a gallant display of poetic justice in showing the Spaniard how life can mimic art.

He got hit in the nuts lol

I'll never watch 'man getting hit by football' the same way again.

This marathon swim, bloody hell... 200 lengths and you can't even grab onto the sides of the pool. I would've drowned aaaages ago.

Not to bring back the debate about which sports should/shouldn't be in the olympics, and how many pool events there are. But if there was ever a swimming event that would be tailor-made for Team GB Gold, it'd be the 'Collecting the black brick from the bottom of the pool' challenge (could even have it at various depths). Also, the fastest person to take off their pyjama bottoms and turn them into a floatation device. (actually, do any other countries practice these life/brick saving skills in school, or is it just the brits?)

Say what you like about Rhythmic Gymnastics, but it's great TV. Very little down time between competitors. Beats heads bobbing in water for hours.

Trying to drink from a plastic cup in open-water swimming doesn't strike me as the most intelligent means of getting a feed.

They should put a fat OAP in the middle of the pool and make the swimmers circumnavigate him. The first person to do so wins. And if you forget a pound for the locker then you don't get to swim.

Our high school swimming carnivals finished with lifesaving events like throw rescues, towing relays and the survival stroke medley which had breaststroke, sidestroke, survival backstroke and freestyle.

(Australia)

Staying up this late gives me the chance to see gaffers I would normally never see. Can't yet decide if that's a good thing or not.

Bah!!!...after a few glorious days, looks like Team GB has settled back into the familiar 'plucky failure' comfort blanket.

Keri-Anne Payne was supposed to win this swim marathon, she's the world champ...send her to the fucking gulag, loser.

Maybe they could put one in each lane, moving slower than a dead body in a lake, then tutting when you take over them. Winners also get a vending machine cup of chicken soup and a dime bar to go with their medal.

But how good are you at rescuing bricks eh?

Aye, it's not looking likely.

It's a damn shame. The only long distance race where Team GB got the tactics right is the men's triathlon. Mo Farrah ran a great individual race but there wasn't much need for tactics, he is so far ahead of the field at 10k. We failed in the road race because of poor tactics, failed at the women's triathlon because of poor tactics, failing in this because of poor tactics. It seems like they need to rethink how they set up the races.

We've got 4 or 5 medals in the bag(I think) in the next couple of days, it's just whether they'll be Gold or Silver now. There's also less medals being handed out now.

And the British cycle of building up an tearing down continues ;)

Indeed. Saturday and Sunday were huge in terms of medals awarded, somewhere around a fifth of the total available for just 2 days of a 16 day tournament.
