Kind of sad that the US women's team dominated in the majority of events over men in this Olympics. Soccer, water polo, volleyball, gymnastics, tennis and even cycling. I wouldn't be surprised if most of the medals were won by female athletes.

It just seems tacky to me after the classy opening ceremony which I felt was let down by the arctic monkeys and Macca

Truly I'd prefer someone like Blur (for all I know they may be playing, I don't know any details) but I think making a ceremony that's meant to appeal to as broad an audience as possible isn't easy.

From memory we had Kylie Minogue wiggling around in something slinky when she was in her prime of hotness singing Celebration - corny as hell but I remember enjoying the closing ceremony in Sydney. As long as there's a good party vibe, it doesn't matter what music is playing.

Source?
But I believe, he has already those Olympic Records, so why not beat them when he can cash in some more? In 200m he clearly could beat the OR, maybe the WR but he chose to do the pose at finish line :)

The source is only something I heard on the radio. Something about runners getting bigger bonuses outside the Olympics. But I'm not 100% sure

Also, I heard he doesn't race in the UK a lot because of the 50% tax

More like 2 years...'96-'98, they were pretty much gone after that.

I guess it seemed like a decade, the amount of times I heard them on the radio. They're influence seemed to last a lot longer than that.

(edit) Anyway - does it seem like most of the good stuff is over?

Australia needs to beat GB to get gold, GB needs to beat Aus with a boat in between. GB in front after the start.

GB in front and Australia in 5th

Light winds. 20 odd metres in it

EDIT: GB first, Australia 2nd

EDIT: GB 1
Croatia 2
Australia 3.

tight race. still early

For sailing in the next olympics they need to bring in some graphical visual aids to show the winds and more in depth commentary about tactics.

It could be a really interesting sport to watch if we could better understand what is going on.

I don't get how we don't win more gold in sailing, you would of thought they would have training on the water everyday, but nope more defeat.

Considering it's their first Olympic games, the lads did very well getting a silver. Apparently they are the first people to medal in sailing in their first Olympic games.

Downwind they use their spinnakers (large sails), and they generally go in a straight line, but upwind they have to tack, or zig-zag, into the wind. A boat will have right of way depending on position and direction, so you can force another boat to turn and lose time if you're in the correct position. You can also position yourself near a boat and block the wind from their sails a bit, which will slow them down.

There's more to it, but that's the gist.

It's their first ever Olympics, the sea is different every day, the Australians have been the best in the world for the past 3 years etc. you should be happy we got a silver

I'm pretty sure the first people to medal in sailing in their first Olympic games were those that competed in the first Sailing competitions back in 1900.

Cheers for that!
It would be great though if they could use giant arrows like in weather forecasts to show the direction of the winds around and inbetween the boats. It would be easier to follow.
I'm not sure how hard it would be to do that though...

Yeah, I agree - especially in gold medal races, where a lot of sailing noobs would be watching.
