The handball final is going to be huge. Sweden will probably get demolished but if they manage to somehow win, they are going to be heroes. I cant imagine a gold medal that would make the people more excited/proud then the handball.

Meh, stupid broadcasters all the time.

To be fair, I'm sure the BBC would love to have more of a global outreach, but there's significant legal issues preventing them doing so.

It'd be wonderful if it was a subscription option internationally. I suspect that's the only way it'd be legally permissible.

i've been pretty avidly following the olympics but totally missed the opening ceremony due to timezone differences/work - is it worth downloading? prob would get bummed watching it knowing that the olympics are now over. :(

Provided you're not expecting a spectacle on the scale of Beijing, it's well worth downloading. Very much about people.

I still haven't seen the coverage of it myself, I might watch it as an opening ceremony to the Paralympics opening ceremony!

The first part was pretty neat.

It doesn't have the OH MY FUCKING GOD spectacularness of Beijing's (though it certainly has spectacular moments) but it is truely amazing and should be watched and overall its a better watch than Beijing's was as it delivers on so many different levels

I wonder if the closing ceremony will feature a mini-performance for the Rio games. I remember Beijing had something for London (giant Leona Lewis singing and Beckham kicking balls out of a double decker bus) and I think the Winter Olympics do the same thing.

I'm disappointed that the distance events aren't finishing in the stadium. It just doesn't have the impact and I think the runners miss out too. It's probably my only disappointment of the games but I find it little unsatisfying.

C'mon guys from Kenya, fall down somehow.

You can do this Marilson.

Yeah, it's shitty. The Men's Marathon in Athens was so goddamn epic (despite the bullshit).

It allows the complete marathon to be in the City of London.

Despite the events being on at terrible times living in Australia, I'm saddened to see the games coming to a close. Really enjoyed what I saw and I got that fire in my belly to get outside and get active again. Would have been a perfect time for me to take a holiday to the UK at the moment, but oh well

On to Rio

However, it's a bit unfair to compare winter olympics with summer ones)

Part of that's the fact that GAF's growing, but I think another part is the fact that this Olympics is in a reasonably convenient timezone for many and has an awful lot of interest for Brits who make up a reasonably large proportion of GAF's membership.

I would expect the next time the Olympics is in the US to beat that postcount. What I'm wondering is if Rio is 'near enough' to do so; it's a reasonable timezone for much of the US, but it's not actually within the US.

As an aside, it's amusing reading the scepticism in the closing pages of the Beijing thread:

In any case London could spend 10x less, like Greece did, and still have a great and artful ceremony, just like Greece did. However, what they had on show there at the closing, didn't seem promising. Looked more like an episode of "So you can dance", only with not as good dancing.

I'm at Hadleigh Farm for the mountain biking cross country. Lots of people here, great crowd, great atmosphere. The sun is blazing, we just walked the course and it looks great. Now sat in our spot for the race by the rock garden. Come on Liam Kileen!

Seeing the fact it's five hours earlier in Rio for me I won't be watching that much as I did this year. For example the hockey finals in the evening, that's gonna be an allnighter. Not to mention those sprint distances late at night :(

So, 24 HD channels and I cant see ANY of this event from what is my local Olympic event. Good job, BBC.
