I think every medal winner gets tested automatically so any other results should show up by the end of this week.

Yeah, they go straight to a drug test room after competing.

I guess there is lag because they have to test positive results a few times to ensure they're correct.

It really fucks me off, actually. That Kiwi woman was robbed of her rightful moment in the Olympic stadium in front of everyone and the Belarusian took that away from her, cynically. That's infuriatingly dickish, and I'm not even Kiwi.

I'm more upset for the Chinese shotputter in fourth, actually. They didn't even get to *participate in* the medal ceremony.

That said, I do have sympathy for those who doped *unknowingly*, the situations where it's the coach who gives them nutritional supplements that are, well, a bit too nutritional. They've been screwed over too.

It begins.

AP: Belarusian shot putter Nadzeya Ostapchuk stripped of gold medal for doping

Funny reading the BBC's story on her winning now:

Hmmm...

What a shocker. If there is one country with systematic douping it's Belarus. Pretty much after every olympics or WC at least one athele from belarus gets caught from using doping.

I don't know what kind of idiot still tries this dumbshit after seeing all of the famous cases of dopers throughout Olympic history shamed and reduced to nothing. That alone would be enough to convince me that it's not worth it.

Let's see now what's there on the TV besides the Olympics...

this. I want the Olympics back!

I'm listening to the radio in protest

edit: oh shit Trevor Nelson is on. I can't escape!

Because your not likely to get caught (if you're working with good people) and "everyone else is doing it". The former cycling pro and now sports director Jonathan Vaughters wrote a great opinion piece in the NYTimes about his excperience with doping

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/12/opinion/sunday/how-to-get-doping-out-of-sports.html?_r=1&smid=tw-nytopinion&seid=auto

That poor girl still had to use Metenolone/anabolic steroids....

There are probably dozens/hundreds of athletes at the Olympics that use much more fancy drugs.

Oooh, I need to find coverage of the Hyde Park concert. Apparently *that's* were Blur were... and they found a Phil Daniels to do Parklife *properly*.

I'm watching the closing ceremony now - shitty low fi feed but damn it looks amazing as the athletes come in. Amazing song choice too - I'm getting a bit teary at it.

After this comes the Olympics hangover and life returns slowly to normal. I kinda feel sorry for you Londoners - in a few years the beautiful dream will be over and the good feelings that fill the city will be a thing of the past.

But that's ahead - well done GB - great show, great times and great results. It was a games filled with soul and fun.

There was a big billboard on the way out of London with this.

I'm actually rather looking forward to the Paralympics from a *broadcasting* standpoint. Channel 4 seem to be pulling out all the stops for it, which I'm impressed by:

Channel 4 today outlined its plans for the most extensive coverage of the Paralympic Games that has ever been broadcast in the UK.

More than 150 hours of all-day everyday coverage will be broadcast during the twelve days of the London 2012 Paralympic Games. Multiple channels and platforms will broadcast live sport on Channel 4, More4 and online at Channel4.com.

In addition, Channel 4 will broadcast three further streams of uninterrupted live coverage of a range of sports at the Paralympic Games. These will be available as three dedicated channels on the Sky platform, in both standard and high definition, as well as online at Channel4.com - with the streams also expected to launch on Virgin Media.

By Channel 4's standards and budgets, this is *huge*. Oh, and one other thing:

Former Paralympian and Channel 4 regular, Ade Adepitan, joins leading broadcaster, Clare Balding, to host Channel 4's daily peak time coverage.

It's sometimes easy to forget that she's actually freelance!

Not sure that if you're talking about their first or second song, but if it's the second: "One Day Like This" was practically an unofficial anthem of the Beijing Olympics in the UK thanks to the BBC using it extensively in their roundup montages. It's part of the reason Elbow were asked to do the theme for the BBC's coverage this time around... of course, it helps that Guy Garvey also works on 6Music!

I hope to never see Michael Phelps again.

I think it was called "with open arms" or something. I skipped a bit of the feed - as it is I'll have to watch the ceremony in two sittings.

Up to the Ugandan getting gold - what an amazing feeling that must be, especially since he's never won a medal before.

For me the highlight of the closing ceremony was the Spice Girls surprise. To see these 5 talented girls united on stage to celebrate Britain, brought tears to my eyes and many others i bet. The wittiness of Gari combined with the powerhouse that is Mel B meant that no one was left untouched and when Spice Up Your Life started blasting all through the 80,000 stadium, the message to the world was clear: We are London2012 and we did the best olympics in the history of mankind.

Does anyone know how they go about getting a medal back? I'd love to be a fly in the wall for that happening.

They just tell her to, the IOC and the IAAF. I think this is the medal, certificate and a pin. If not, I'm assuming she'd be billed or charged with theft?

So does China.

Their tears must wreak havoc with the pool salinity.

In other news, an American Olympian was formerly stripped of his Gold from Athens on Friday.

Just days before the eight-year deadline expires, the IOC formally stripped American cyclist Tyler Hamilton of his 2004 gold for doping Friday and awarded the medal to a Russian rider who now becomes a three-time Olympic champion.
The International Olympic Committee executive board notified Hamilton — a former teammate of Lance Armstrong — that he has been disqualified from his victory in the road race time trial at the Athens Games.
The medal will now go to Viatcheslav Ekimov, another former Armstrong teammate who already has two Olympic golds. American Bobby Julich will be moved up from bronze to silver, and Michael Rogers of Australia from fourth to bronze.

I was listening to sports talk today and they made a pretty good point. If you are in a sport where the ultimate goal is not the Olympic medal, then your sport probably shouldn't be in the Olympics.

I know that will never happen. Because the amount of ratings/buzz that the Olympics gets from having the stars play is too great , but it should be that way.

Why?

Unless I'm forgetting something, Eric Idle was the highlight of the opening ceremony for me.

Yep your correct, I also thought the ode to Only Fools and Horses was pretty good as well.

And I never want to see Jessie J ever again in any major event in the UK. Where was Tom Jones though?

Shall be interesting to see if GB's strength and Australia's under performance these games translates into a reversal of recent results in the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

Obviously not competing as Great Britain would impact the result. Any GBers want to estimate how much England contributes toward the GB 2012 total?

It was a better performance than the shit served up by Liam.
But who was it?!

I think it was Lolo Jones but I'm not sure.

Between 50%-60% I reckon.

I think at one point, Greater Manchester alone would have been 10th on the medal table, but Scotland were a huge part of our success for sure.

I remember thinking that the woman was doping when I watched her throw.

Good for the Kiwi champion, she deserves the gold, I just wish there was a way to redo the medal ceremony!

She actually went thru hell just to compete in the shot put final after some clowns at the NZOC didn't fill out the paperwork correctly and her name was left off the entry list. It's such a big deal back home the Minister for Sport has gotten involved, but now Valerie Adams has the gold medal people will be able to relax a bit.

The Russian girl who now gets silver must be the prettiest shot putter I've ever seen. Happy for her, too, and whoever now gets the bronze.

So, are the Sydney games still the best ever or has the torch been passed to Britain?

Depends on who you ask, the Sydney Morning Herald seemed to think London was better (so I read on the BBC) but then we are talking 12 years difference and benchmarks will always change. Many will still say Beijing were.

For Brits they will be, cos we hosted, did far better at that than we assumed we would and had our best medal result in 100 years...

I'd like to say it's our best ever.

We'll never get as many golds as we did in 1908 as we had pretty much 1/3 of the athletes. Doesn't really hold up to this day very well.

It was the best for NZ, too, because six gold medals at a proper Olympics with every country competing beats getting eight golds in 1984.
