PS4 has 8 GB OF GDDR5 RAM

I thought 512 was crazy back in 2005 but this gen showed it was clearly a necessity, and the 360 still managed to come at 300/400. I kinda of expect a pathetic HD on $400 and an amazing one on $500, but that probably depends on how much the components will cost once manufacturing gets going, and how much of a lose they're willing to eat. I would be surprised at $500 or above as the minimum though, $500 and $600 stung pre-recession, and even if inflation and tablets make that more digestible that can only go so far, especially as most people's wages haven't exactly grown with inflation.

What could 8GB of GDDR5 mean in terms of games?

And this is just one of the first wave of games for the PS4.

Which means that they could be also wrong about Durango specs.

UMMM... expect every other single spec, down the second place decimal point of the TFLOP number was correct. everything else was exact.

Don't expect anything to be increased specs wise for MS platform beyond the released specs. We already found out from bg that the cpu is more powerful then we once thought.

My main point is, expect the worst, hope for the best. Setting yourself up for disappointment. With that said, I do want answers regarding this 8gb of gddr5 ram situation with PS4.

THIS.

They jumped from 2GB to perhaps 4GB and now they are going over it. The launch generation games will not be a good indication of the system is truly capable of. Heck, I do not see it happening before the twilight years. That said, given the easier architecture, the middle years (3rd year onwards) we should start to see what the learning maturation can bring to the table, especially first parties.

This is the most exciting part. Most of this stuff was created at much lower spec. Although, with games being multiplatform they will still have to target the lower platform (Durango).

My question is how much of this memory is for games? Is there separate memory for the OS and the Share stuff? I'd imagine that'd use up a lot of it.

bubububuBUBUBUBUBU it was impossible! the "experts" told me!

Really the most interesting news out of the meeting.

Welcome to our world. Led by the nose and told it was impossible. In a way, I think it was a good thing given my expectations were based around BF3 on high settings and 3.5GB GDDR5 available for games. Now it may be north of 5GB for game development.

And that is perhaps built around older spec (4GB RAM)

This was hugely surprising. It's the largest amount of GDDR5 memory in... anything really. That's one spec for PS4 that can undoubtedly be marked as high end.

And just like that the Wii U's chance for receiving next gen 3rd party ports just faded to nil. It was nice knowing you Nintendo.

8 times the available RAM in comparison... 176 GB/s unified memory bandwidth...

PC Gaf has got to be shaking in their boots lolz, this machine has a larger amount of GDDR5 RAM than all of their available singular non SLIed/crossfired graphics cards lol, although it may yet be slower than your garden variety GTX 680. Even the upcoming NVIDIA Titan won't have 8 GB GDDR5 RAM lol.

How the hell are they gonna port their games to PC? Will we be seeing 8 GB RAM minimum for system requirements for pc ports? Motherboards don't even support onboard DDR4 RAM yet and DDR5 is still being finalized by JEDEC lol.

Kudos to Sony, you've made PC GAF very very envious and jealous today lol.

Interesting... Looks like I could get this and then not have to upgrade the PC for quite a while.
Now we just need to wait to find out how many decibels it is.

I just don't see how there going to have both 8GB of GDDR5 and launch and launch a console at $399. One things for sure Sony will be switching to Stacked DDR4 ram as soon as they can. 8GB of DDR4 stacked, should get them to the same bandwidth at a lower cost.

The PS4 system architecture is distinguished by its high performance and ease of development. PS4 is centered around a powerful custom chip that contains eight x86-64 cores and a state of the art graphics processor.

The Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) has been enhanced in a number of ways, principally to allow for easier use of the GPU for general purpose computing (GPGPU) such as physics simulation. The GPU contains a unified array of 18 compute units, which collectively generate 1.84 Teraflops of processing power that can freely be applied to graphics, simulation tasks, or some mixture of the two.

PS4 is equipped with 8 GB of unified system memory, easing game creation and increasing the richness of content achievable on the platform. GDDR5 is used for this memory, giving the system 176 GB/second of bandwidth and providing a further boost to graphics performance.

Fuck me. I want one.

I'm super excited about 8GB of GDDR5. But I'm also very concerned about the console price. I was expecting $399, but there's no way it will happen now. I guess $499 is more realistic.

Looks like stacking is in. It is the only way they can have 8GB GDDR5

Thank you, but now I have another question; don't they have to dedicate some of the memory for the OS and system-level features, like the streaming and capture stuff? So is it really 8GB available for the devs, or is it 8GB minus whatever is dedicated to the "OS," which is, what, ~1.5 GBs?

I'm just trying to understand, as I too am blown away they went with 8GB, no matter what they need to use for OS.

some amount will be set asied but I don't think we know how much that is actually going to be.

You mean like those PS4 devkit specs with 4 GB RAM? All the 720 specs are from a document that is more than one year old. Of course thing's have changed since and it's no big deal to switch from 8 GB RAM to 12 or even 16. Actually going to 16 GB DDR3 would be much cheaper than going from 4 GB GDDR5 to 8.

He is saying it is too late for MS to react to this news and revise the hardware. If MS had already revised the hardware between the leak from last year and now, that would be different. But they can't get off their asses and start making changes without delaying the release.

''8GB OF DDR5 RAM US''

Seriously this shit is cray, PS4 it is for me. I never thought they would actually pull this stuff.

Lol, there is gonna have to be a lot of people eating their shit here. I think I remember someone saying they would give up their avatar if it had 8GB, and there were more than a few $100 bets.

Plus the Agnis Demo running really time. "Only on a PC, couldn't be possible on a console."

The anti-hype train is derailing.

Sony, thank you for blowing me away today. Let's make this coming E3 even crazier.

Nobody expected 8GB of GDDR5 on the PS4. The mst you can get on one consumer graphics card is 6GB.
Yeah, and it's a card that costs $1000.

Look at all that space you can't play in! KZ4 was the most boring presentation out of all of them.

Deep Down looked the best.
It's a launch game, and it looked absolutely incredible. They're not going to be able to make a brand new massive open world game ready for a launch of new console.

Deep Down looked incredible too. Caught glimpse of "fluid simulation" on their Panta Rei engine description screen too which was great to see.

There's completely no point in putting 16GB of RAM in a machine with the level of hardware spec these consoles will have. What are you going to do with it? Wait for half an hour for things to load into it from a disc?

Keep your second job. Get a third job. And maybe sell plasma.

lol, I'll probably be setting aside a third of my income from my summer job for this thing. Never before have I wanted a system so badly. God knows what I'll do if Microsoft matches Sony.

Seriously though, no plasma. My body wasn't ready for the awesomeness of the conference, and it still sure as hell isn't ready for the system itself.

also, seems like Vita is incomplete now...it's big brother isn't really here, which seems to be a big part of the design behind Vita. Gives me new hope that Sony is going to support the system heavily...

all in all a great conference, and MM was my personal highlight, while Capcom's working title was just stunning..

Can't be happy about this when thinking about what it will do to the price.

You'll buy it once....the ram will last forever :).

Seriously people will pay more for high tech stuff these days. Smartphones...tablets....laptops...etc. I'll chuck out a good amount for this.
