Microsoft Conference: Will they Bring It Like Sony Did?

if people think that Sony somehow has their new "Features" cornered, they are deluded

Of course 720 will have all of those dashboard conveniences and more

not only have they proven that the user experience is king and not only do they have the experience and engineers to make it happen, they pioneered MOST all of the dash features on consoles today.

so to think anything we saw at Sony conference will be exclusive to it is not reasonable

They very well could buy OnLive or unveil their own personal cloud gaming service, but most of the features Sony talked about (even if they don't all exist yet) are only possible because Gaikai was purchased. They already have the infrastructure for it already set up at least to some extent.

Streaming entire games worth of content takes a lot more effort, bandwidth and infrasturcture, though I'm sure MS could have assumed what Sony would do with it when it was announced they bought gaikai way back. I'm sure they will have something to counter it, but it isn't guaranteed they have the potential to do all those things on their own.

Just don't push any streaming bullshit. Gaiki sounds like one of the shittiest, scummest, most garbage intutives any gaming company has tried to push. Way worse than kinect.

Please explain how flailing your arms in front of your TV is better than being able to instantly play games with minimal effort.

Cloud Gaming needs to evolve to work well, but this is the best way to do it, with the backing of a major game console company at your back. It may not have lots of that shit day one, but getting the full PS1 and PS2 library in there is easily doable as they grow the brand. But I can see what you mean. Instant access to hundreds of awesome games isn't as cool as flailing your arms around in front of a camera.

I'm honestly interested to see what MS can do to make console gaming different from the High-end pc stuff that i've moved to. Better hardware just isn't going to cut it...they just aren't going to outdo the pc on that front. What's unique to console gaming that makes me want to play something on my TV?

i'm interested in the integration with media services...somehow seamlessly integrating LIVE with tv. I'm honestly interested in Kinect and how it might enhance TV, Media, the interface experience that i have with my overall TV and then games to a degree. I DO want my console to be more than a games machine, and I also want the experience to be unique to the medium and something that i can't get from maxing out my PC hardware.

Well going off the Yukon leak, Microsoft did consider buying OnLive, but decided to develop their own streaming service. However, that leak is almost 3 years old now.

LOL , too me it sounded like they wanted to show the next FF at E3 nothing to do with exclusivity. hopefully its not another corridor FF

Sounded to me like Sony rushed their unveiling. There wasn't much to show or say, not even a console to look at. And those guys from Square used it as an opportunity to get a free trip to New York. Can't blame them for that. NYC is a fun place.

Do elaborate.

Sorry. I'm talking more about having to pay a monthly or yearly fee so that I can play a selection of playstation games with input lag and video compression.

Everyone around here seems to be talking about how Sony is making a console for "gamers" yet all this feature says to me is that they don't give a shit about gamers, and really don't understand gamers if they think this feature is something to be proud of.

The lag and video compression is usually exaggerated. These are problems time and money will solve. I don't see how offering gamers instant access to large libraries of games from any device is telling anyone they don't give a shit about gamers

I'm definitely excited to see the conference but I feel Microsoft isn't after the hardcore gamer anymore. I believe they are capitalizing on the Wii's mistakes. Making an HD console with solid motion controls (Kinect 2.0) which will be able to provide entertainment in every aspect. They see the money that the Wii made by marketing the system for non hardcores (mostly) and they have dollar signs in their eyes. PS4 will be the power house gamers console this generation. Nextbox will be a family oriented console marketed towards getting everyone to have fun with it.

Ign saying battlefield 4 is pure sex and at the gamestop meeting last week it received a standing ovation. Also it will be revealed soon.

since EA skipped the ps4 reveal show, i am betting a ban bet that BF4 is revealing at the next xbox event. This alone should destroy that "media only and family gaming is for teh new xbox" bullshit gaf seem to keep trolling.

HYPE.

If EA is there, they can show off Next Gen sports games.

ohhhh fuuucckkkkk

nothings wrong with streaming(microsoft will have it as well) but sony is passing it off as an equivalent for BC that imo is the issue.

No one seemed super thrilled with Killzone either, because FPS games tend not to provide that kind of hype anymore. I'd hope to see some non-racer/shooter games from MS. Make use of RARE and Mistwalker, maybe Fable 4 returning to the series roots and being more like Fable 1.

Maybe Sony thought GDC would be cool for BF4... Two months is maybe a little bit too long for a "reveal soon"...

It sounds like you don't understand gamers considering everyone seems to disagree with you.

Also sounds like you're going out of your way to find something to hate on.

Other than the massive server infrastructure needed. To make streaming work, you need to have servers near population centers.

As far as bandwidth is concerned, that shouldn't be much harder than watching HD movies while they stream, and consoles can do that already.
"Streaming" a demo isn't like cloud gaming, you're still downloading the binaries and running them on your console, but you can start playing before the download is complete. The difficult part is in sending the "chunks" of data in the right order so that you get the ones you need first. That's what is done with playing while installing from a disk, doing it from a network would be very similar, maybe with a bit more buffering at the beginning.

I think we're making huge assumptions about what they will or won't do, as has been done every time they launched a console and I'm starting to think they might just defy expectations and turn the negatives around yet again.

this wave of negativity will just further fuel their hype if it turns out to be wrong.

What? If you played killzone 2 and three you know why that game isnt impressive to a lot of us. BF3 was better the both those games in every aspect.

Maybe Sony thought GDC would be cool for BF4... Two months is maybe a little bit too long a "reveal soon"...
So why did bf4 revealed behind closed doors at a gamestop meeting and not at sony coming out party? In fact, ea wasn't there at all. :/

If it is April 26th, then the timing is bad for MS IMO.

Sandwiched in between GDC and E3, there is a good chance that they spread themselves too thin between all 3.

Interesting to see though.

If I was MS I would have put all focus on E3, and avoid any other conference.

My key worries that can make or break the conference:

1. Don't focus too much on 3rd party. Even if you moneyhat timed exclusives, there's no point in showing off a bunch of games that are coming to PS4 as well. Sony did a great job of blending both.
2. Kinect 2.0. Specs wise Sony's cam is Kinect 1.5 and they spent about 10 seconds on it. If this is the reason to buy your next console you better have enough software to wow us. The rumored specs aren't all that impressive to be honest. So hopefully there's a bigger upgrade.
3. Answer all the crazy questions. Can it play used games? Is it always online? Is Kinect mandatory? Is installing mandatory? I do expect most of these to be dodged since it'll do nothing but gain negative attention.
4. DON'T BLOCK USED GAMES. I don't care how good your system is, how good the games look, how cheap the system might be. It's simple, if you block used games i'm not buying your system. Even if they treat used games like an "online pass" and require a pass to play you used game, i'm out. To be honest i think this rumor is full of shit but who knows.
5. I think a lot of people are getting sick of dat paywall. They won't do shit but it would be nice they smartened up a bit.

I am aware, and I played BF3 and dislike Killzone as well. I just don't think anyone is going to lose their shit over a multiplat FPS in a series of many entries. A new IP or some more original title is more likely to do it.

Yeah. But paying a monthly/yearly fee for absolutely zilch is a-okay, right?

I have no idea how someone's brain could work this way. Much less how there's any comparison (good or bad) whatsoever between streaming content and Kinect.

I enjoyed KZ2 SP far more than BF3's. DICE has yet to make a good single player campaign in their BF games.

I've heard some rumblings that MS is going to really surprise some people (in a good way).

Basically don't expect a cheap box...

I think you are wrong, especially if the rumors are true that it is moneyhatted. Yes, a new ip CAN be exciting, but BF4 can still blow us away more then any new ip.

Yeah. But paying a monthly/yearly fee for absolutely zilch is a-okay, right?

id pay 50 bucks a year for party chat, and cross game chat

hell Ill pay for the opportunity TO talk to one friend for extended periods of time.

playstation 3 online communication shouldnt be this bad

is the sony's cam really as sophisticated as Kinect in terms of using ir to carry out skeletal tracking? I must admit I got the impression it was still more rudimentary?

Gaikai also offered downloads, not just streaming. Preloading a game then continuing to download it while playing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRyx8dFooV0

I'm sure streaming will be an option (that I dislike, myself) - but there will be more than just streaming. Man-up by researching a bit, k?

...
So why did bf4 revealed behind closed doors at a gamestop meeting and not at sony coming out party? In fact, ea wasn't there at all. :/
Why because of MS exclusivity, of course! Let's take it a step further; all EA titles going forth will be MS exclusive because of no-used game policy that is implemented with always-online yes?

How exactly will money solve propagation delays? :)

OnT: Extrapolating from MS showings from the last couple of E3s I doubt they'll "bring it". It's gonna be Kinect, Halo, Forza,Gears, some Kinect again and some US only services on the side.

I can only hope so. I would really love to see two great next gen consoles. Kinect does not bug me like it does others on GAF. Just the speculation so far is leaving the Nextbox behind in my books. I will glady by both if the Nextbox justifies itself in the first year if not, I will buy it down the road. I know I don't know anything about systems specs or what not but GAF is really bringing the Nextbox down.

It sounds like you don't understand gamers considering everyone seems to disagree with you.

Also sounds like you're going out of your way to find something to hate on.

While I don't think most are as down on streaming games to that extent, I seriously doubt many people are excited about it. First and foremost it's no different than the always on requirement of Diablo III since you need to always be signed in and online to play anything. Then you have all the possible problems he mentioned. At best it is a better than nothing solution.

I'm fairly sure you're just joking here but it really does sound like something the evil, mustache twirling caricature of EA that people like to paint would actually do.

It'd never happen but if it by some miracle did, I'd laugh. I'd feel bad for people who care about EA games but since I personally don't, I laugh and laugh and laugh...

1) I think MS needs to show 3rd party, as well. They need to show that 3rd parties are behind the box and will support it.
2) I don't care for motion control. Don't care for Move, don't care for Kinect. Stick with core gamers since they are always the first adopters.
3) Agreed.
4) Agreed x9000
5) Not going to happen - MS knows they can get people to pay for what other companies offer for free. They have already hooked that fish. I do not expect a change, sadly.

is the sony's cam really as sophisticated as Kinect in terms of using ir to carry out skeletal tracking? I must admit I got the impression it was still more rudimentary?

Sony's cam is two regular cams taped together. It has a higher resolution and framerate than a kinect, but doesn't have the IR stuff, so depth measurement must be done by additional processing.

I think you are wrong, especially if the rumors are true that it is moneyhatted. Yes, a new ip CAN be exciting, but BF4 can still blow us away more then any new ip.

I'm sure it can be really impressive, but most people complained when graphics was the only difference with some games and preferred new experiences. The game may end up being awesome, but will it really be a showcase for a whole new generation of consoles?
