Microsoft Conference: Will they Bring It Like Sony Did?

Gran Turismo, Uncharted, and God of War.

After those, they have a variety of IPs and studios that can sell a couple million copies of their games.
If those series can be called blockbuster franchises, then so can Halo, Gears of War*, Fable and Forza be called that as well.

*I know that Gears isn't owned by MS, but they have an exclusive publishing agreement with Epic.

they didn't?

Until this moment, the system appears to be everything gamers wanted.

I mean... lol, you know what? There's no point talking to blind and deaf people.

Enjoy your kinect 2.

It really was pretty uneventful. I mean the specs are nice but the conference was a snoozer. All MS would have to do is show interesting games totally more than 1.

A) I wasn't impressed by Sony at all. And I don't think that casual gamers really were either. And by that I mean the average joe who bought a 360 this gen and just plays CoD, Madden and Halo on Live. Was the tech impressive? Yes it was. But its the games and services that will ultimately decide Sony's fate. I didn't see any system sellers at their conference. Remember, its Sony that has to win over 360 owners and attract a new audience.
B) Sony set the table. Microsoft knows what they have to do to upstage Sony now. So they are going to do just that. Sony would do the same thing had Microsoft gone first.

Gran Turismo, Uncharted, and God of War.

1. Halo sells around the same if not more than Gran Turismo, Fable Sells around 4-5 Million each time, same with forza. MS has more than just Halo as a blockbuster.

2. Microsoft has more studios than Sony.

Sad thing is what happened to those devs after they made those exclusives. Even the great David Jafee was reduced to iOS games.
If only they would jump ship to MS where they're given infinite financial support, time, and freedom to make whatever they desire...

Claiming that Sony didn't push Move very hard is ridiculous.

You must be forgetting about E3 2010 where they made a huge deal about their Coca-Cola partnership and called it "One of the biggest brand partnerships Sony has ever had". And 'blanketing the country' with Move kiosks. Or all of the commercials with Kevin Butler making fun of Wii and Kinect. The Move console bundles. All of the Sony first party titles that were either built specifiially for Move controls or were updated for Move like LBP2.

And then just last week where they announced Move controllers would work on the PS4, and showed a Move demo from Media Molecule, and revealed they will be bundling every PS4 with a camera (just like Microsoft is supposedly doing with Kinect). It certainly looks like it will be a big focus of the next Playstation.

I agree with you on the fact that Sony tried to push the Move to high heaven, but they did not say anything about the camera being bundled. They showed a picture of it and moved on. The press release after mentions a headset bundled with every console, but not the camera. I am sure they want to, but are not committing for either cost or competitive reasons. They probably should though for the same reasons Microsoft is probably going to bundle the Kinect 2.0.

More like his choice not to make God of War 14 or Twisted Metal 8. Hopefully E3 will show us that Sony isnt out of ideas just yet.

What revisionist stuff is this? Jaffe left after GOW1 cause of the toll it was taking on his family life. He spent 6 months of pre-production on a PSP game that he says he walked away from and took a break as lead designer and then came back with Calling All Cars a game born out of his own desire.

Did this really just get said in a MS thread of all places? :\

I think both Sony and Microsoft have done a good job with smaller titles like Journey or Mark of the Ninja, but what excites me to buy a shiny new console are new AAA (I hate that term) experiences I can't get elsewhere. Not the console exclusive version of Minecraft.

I completely agree with you on that. Doesn't change that fact that your completely wrong about your reference to Jaffe.

I actually agree with you 100% there. But sticking to that line of thinking what has MS been criticized for in the last few years? For only releasing the same 3 AAA IPs and then nothing else for core gamers. It just seemed silly to see a comment saying "god of war 14" and "maybe they'll have some new ideas at E3" when they have 2 new IPs coming this year and have had new ips in the last few years.

The specifics of his reasons may be so, but it doesnt change the fact he walked away from God of War at its height to make new experiences. Where's my Uncharted or even Resistance for this generation?

I'm not letting Microsoft off the hook yet either, but we havent seen what they've got up their sleeves. Sony decided to go first and they didnt have much to show at all.

When I bought my 360 I knew I was gonna get Gears of War, Mass Effect, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey and they all looked awesome.

I, for one, would love to see more giant enemy scarabs in the Halo series.

And more Fable games based on ancient British history.

They need to kill Fable off and move on from that garbage. Now more Scarabs....mmmhmm

Yeah I hope we get some reveals of promising new IP for sure

If it comes down to games, particularly exclusives, I don't like Microsoft's chances. Of the big three, MS has to rely on third parties the most by far. Halo is literally the only blockbuster IP they own.

I'm going to assume sarcasm. Or you gave yourself away too easily.

Overrated developer, not worth MS' money. Cliffy B on the other hand deserves his own studio.
Yup totally. MS' money needs to go to more studios like RARE and Lionhead who have provided them amazing first party titles this generation.

I think that Microsoft will have an easier time because outside of the spec situation whether or not it is more powerful, they have the opportunity to show a variety games. Doesn't matter the type; casual or hardcore.... these are really just marketing terms to pigeonhole a product. They do that and I think they are fine.

Lastly if they don't focus on a shooter that would be a welcome change. Killzone 4 looks great and I have Killzone 3 to play but there was no reason for that to be the main demo of the event.

Oh ok so you just meant the upcoming generation, I misunderstood you and I agree I'd like to see more new IPs. E3 should definitely be where the floodgates open for both of them since both will have unveiled already. It's part of the reason why I was more impressed with Knack (the amazing IQ and Mark Cerny being the rest) and Watch Dogs over most of the other stuff at the Sony event. Games that looked new and may be trying somewhat new things.

Just give Ballmer a bump of coke and shove him out onto the stage. That's all I really want in life.

Clearly this worked for the Qualcomm conference.

They will bring it....oh yes, they will bring it

They both have made games this generation that have scored higher than 77 meta and had over 1 million in sales.

I'm sure they'll bring it...ya know tons of ads and maybe shock the industry with a FF7 remake exclusive to Nextbox :O

Ok, now that we've lived dream, we'll just say more ads and more talking about XBL improvements.

Er, when you imply things happened for a particular reason it kinda does matter.

I'm really excited about Knack, and even if most don't see it now I think it's going to be big. Game looks really fun and unique and Cerny has a tremendous resume. It's very distinctly using new capabilities in its mechanics, that's what I want from launch games. Get those creative juices flowing and let's see how we can change certain genres and accumulate the more interesting mechanics.

Other than that, yeah I do want another new experience or two out of Sony for the launch window. I happen to like Killzone and inFamous a lot but I want new experiences to open a new generation, then the established franchises can come in and take cues from them so they feel fresh.

I think we'll see new stuff at E3 though. Something like Puppeteer on PS4 hardware could be phenomenal, but we need something we haven't 'felt' yet.

Microsoft really needs to let Rare do whatever the hell they want. There's probably so much potential for great games there, but we aren't really getting a chance to see it. Honestly, I think Rare on a real Fable title could end up being brilliant.

MS would also do well to get another Crackdown going. I think exclusives work best when they're experiences you couldn't otherwise get. I get the feeling MS may understand this, so their lack of effort hurts them less. Killzone is good but so is COD and BF. Sony needs more stuff like inFamous and the original Resistance (Halo style). God of War qualifies here too really. Any game that's worth attempting to emulate (GT -> Forza) means it's what an exclusive should be. MS just needs to do more period though. They need more big-budget games, not just bite-sized things on XBLA.

Gaf just keeps on delivering today.

Sony absolutely pushed Move as hard as they could. They wanted the casual audiences money.

Sony tried to make a better Wiimote and nobody cared.
Microsoft went a different route, and people bought it.
Thats all there is to it.

Even if Sony didnt push it hard enough like you say..is Sony wasting money on a fairly expensive peripheral really something to brag about? The goal is to be successful.
FYI Move is generating a profit for Sony. It's selling nowhere near as good as Kinect, but they made their money back easily. It wasn't a failure. Software sales are abysmal for both Kinect and Move. The only thing that sold well on Kinect is Dance Central.

forza isn't a blockbuster,far from it lol.

Just Dance, Dance Central series, Kinect Sports 1 & 2, Kinectimals, Kinect Star Wars, Disneyland Aventures all sold over 1 million. Hell I'd bet Kinect Sports sold more than all move games combined.

Selling 4 - 5 million on each version is not a blockbuster? So that would mean God of War is not a blockbuster either, same for Uncharted.

Not sure why your harping on it, replace "Karaoke" with "dance game" if its really that important.

Also, they have a Karaoke Kinect game, check the Marketplace.

It just came out and it was never on an E3 stage. Karaoke is 100% different from a Kinect Karaoke game and it deserved to be on that stage just like Ubisoft which people say won E3, has rappers and dancers to promote Just Dance.

Again, MS should never cater to average haters regardless. If they keep on target they will be more than fine when the Xbox is on sale.

Forza Motorsports actually sell pretty well, unfortunately Horizon-- which is an awesome game-- seems to be bombing.

i believe they don't sell that well depending what is well to you. they are 1 to 2 million sellers at best and the reason you see 4 million for some is due to heavy bundles. Fable is bigger and some seem to forget that.

like i said it sold that much due to heavy bundles. forza 3 and 4 sold poor in the us their first month and didn't have much legs.

Isn't "Cool story Bro"ing people bannable?

Respectfully, your analogy about eye pet misses my point.. I said Microsoft rubbed me the wrong with with their shift toward casual, kinect focused kinect enabled kinect centric kinect kinect. I felt they were stalling the next gen, frankly, under the pretense that this web cam peripheral was what I wanted/needed at this stage of the console life cycle... I didn't like the direction they were taking, which was basically 2 more years of focusing on reaching the clappers/dancers/steppers and sticking the graphics divas (read: me) with old tech and rehashed CODs.

Again, it wasn't that I had anything against making Xbox better, or more robust - but Kinect did neither of those things *for me*. I just made me bitter that because of this trash, I'd have to wait years longer for new console hardware. And it drove me back to the PC.

Because EA won't release NHL Hockey on PC, I still have to lean on my console for hockey. But I can't get past the long load times, unskippable screens of loading, reading, saving, loading loading. Kinect didn't make my games load any faster. It didn't make the framerates better, or the graphics. Or improve my satisfaction with the console in any way. If anything, the games were taking longer and longer to get into, from when you power on to when the puck finally drops.

Everything on PC is near instant. Consoles need to be more like this, and Sony has already said they've made this a huge priority in their press event. I find this very encouraging. I hope Microsoft pays attention.

8 years is a long time. I intend on giving Microsoft every opportunity to sell me on their new console. Just as I do with Sony. But the first words out their mouth had better not be "Kinect 2.0".

"Xbox 360 2.0" or "Xbox Live 2.0" sure. I want to hear about customizable dashboards, quantum leaps in graphics performance, solid state drive and expandable HD options..I want the focus to be on games, and on winning me back. Flailing my hands and yelling orders and swiping and clapping to a camera is all well and good, but I'm not willing to shell out $100 extra just so I can have that "immersion". If it can track 10,000 fingers or just 10, I could not care less. Does it make my console boot faster?

Anyways I digress. I want MS to wow me with their hardware, and impress me with their renewed focus on (I hate this term) core gaming, core gamers. XBL should be blowing us away by now, instead of leaving us wondering why we're still paying *extra* for it. There's lost Microsoft can do to make me care about Xbox 720/Inifnity. Kinect 2.0 is about as enticing to me as detachable faceplates.

First off you need to check your eyesight. Please find the 'broing' in your in your own quotes. So the old cry wolf routine doesnt work. I said Cool Story. Period

Again, an optional motion control device that every single console has that NEVER stalled one hardcore franchise you say you were a fan of. The new goalposts of load times etc. arent why you originally said you gave up your console and games. But again, I hope MS says Kinect 2.0 in the first line, because they are still going to promote the device as they absolutely should. MA delived the biggest core games as well as casual for the Kinect, because everybody in the family doesnt sit around playing Call of Duty and Elder Scrolls dirung the holidays.
