Kotaku Rumor: Microsoft 6 months behind in game production for X720 [Pastebin = Ban]

Just to say jstevenson is just saying they have a good relationship still; not that they actually have a PS4 kit (not that they could say this) but possibly thats where the rumours are from. They have afterall been working on Fuse for EA.

So, let's talk about the plausibility of a MS delay until early 2014.

Would they really launch ~6 months later, with weaker hardware, and miss out on a holiday season?

Sony launched much later with PS3 but they had more powerful hardware which helped offset the delay in the eyes of the early adopters (i.e. gamers).

I'm not really sure I could see MS doing it.

This is the second time this rumor has popped up, first time was about a year ago. I remember hearing something about heating issues back then too. I figured all this stuff would be sorted out by now though.

Third Console Curse.

These rumors are getting hilarious.

It's as real as the madden curse

I didn't hear a year ago, but I would have to agree on expecting the issue to be resolved(or at least dwindled the issue) within a year's time

First Xbox had heat issues along with its own power cord replacement program. YLOD is nowhere as widespread as the RROD was.

Lol, power cord was a lesser problem than DVD on PS2 or YLOD, and YLOD are not at the same level than RROD, true, but it is a real issue, but consoles suffer thanks to solder.

Well hopefully that information was old and somewhat exaggerated, so hardware issues with Durango will have been sufficiently sorted out for a late May reveal and a November release.

I have a hard time seeing Microsoft commit to a whole six months behind the PS4.

Major Nelson said on his podcast to be stoked for the reveal. What's another term for stoked? Fired up.

He's hinting at it, ladies and gentlemen.

It's pointless to make strawman arguments though.

For all you know they have them but haven't officially unveiled their new game/s. They aren't even officially on any next gen platform yet so who wants to start the Insomniac doesn't have new Xbox dev kits?

Probably some good reason but he also is a mouthpiece of Microsoft. He shouldn't be expected to say anything otherwise.

One thing I've gotten from this thread is that it seems that half (exaggeration) the god damn posters on this forum are supposed gaming industry insiders. Lol.

I wonder what other exclusive they'll get? I could see them get Fallout 4 or something along those lines. I'd doubt it'd be a launch (or launch window) title though. Would be really cool to see Fallout 4 use that Illumniroom tech though.

Did the DRE controversy cause any injuries? No.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/news/press/2005/feb05/02-17xboxconsolepr.aspx

"However, in 30 consoles worldwide, these failures are reported to have caused minor injury or minor property damage. In seven instances, customers reported sustaining a minor burn to their hand. In 23 instances, customers reported smoke damage, or minor damage to a carpet or entertainment center."

NDA should prevent him from saying anymore than what he said. It was reassuring for me at least.

I don't think they'd do it unless they absolutely had to. They have enough 3rd party support that they could rely on that until first party stuff was ready. If the hardware was having issues, they'd probably compromise on the power before delaying it.

the only chance i could realistically see ms missing this xmas is if they are confident sony wont get their system out either, a delay for both to 2014 could be beneficial as i'm sure neither want to repeat the wii u launch troubles but neither would want to let the other get the upper hand

another slight possibility is that both only release in one region this xmas, ms in the usa and sony in japan i'd guess

Isn't that his job though? To get fans of the company he works for "fired up"?

I noticed how he made a remark about "games" being shown in his latest podcast but with a defiant tone. The comment section on his blog can get heated to say the least especially about MS' focus with Xbox.

Very hypothetically? We had a lot of 'one console in 2013' rumours, everyone really oddly assumed Sony just because of the PS3. Now am not saying these rumours were true and it was actually MS, but it wasn't deaths door if Sony were later by 6 months or less. Everyone did just decide it wasn't true when Sony confirmed 2013.

Better to get it 'right'. 'Being first' means nothing in generations that last up to 7 years, its about being best every year and any year. We've seen this repeatedly.

I've never been a big believer in the being first thing - unless we're talking a very long time, upwards of a year can give your opponent 'the edge' but as we see with Nintendo, that doesn't mean there in a position to take advantage.

If its a software issue, I think they'll launch 2013 if the hardware is ready. Why not.
If its a hardware issue, I think they'll be forced into 2014. The battle will take place over that year with all three locking horns fully that holiday. No long term problem for MS.

So I could see MS doing it if they had no choice, however it does seem at least third parties are preparing for 2013. So I think they'll be out this year unless they have a timetable that makes the hardware perfected in early 2014.

Just personal thoughts.

I'd be super bummed if I had to wait until 2014 for the next Xbox, but if it showed enough cool stuff to keep me away from the PS4, I could wait.

Yeah, didn't someone at Acti say last year there would only be one console in 2013? I mean, that's something you don't take with a grain of salt.

GDDR5. And yes, MS should delay the next Xbox. It's behind schedule, and it's looking to be weak compared to its main competition. Get your shit together, Ballmer.

If this is the case then questions should be asked as to why. This has been the longest generation I can remember so there has been plenty of preparation time

It was Gamestop.

While Christmas 2013 releases for both consoles have been rumoured, the boss of the biggest specialist games retailer in the world told Polygon that the latest whispers he's heard suggest Microsoft and Sony will enter the next gen race at the different times.

"This week, I'm getting a lot of rumors that are very interesting about 2013," Raines said. "We have not been expecting two more consoles in 2013.

"We're expecting Wii U this holiday, another one next year, and another one in '14. These rumors change every week, but we're hearing more about next year."

Xbox 360 launched a full year before PS3, a factor many feel has greatly contributed to the success of Microsoft's console, and Sony has admitted it would be "undesirable" to let Xbox 720 get a significant head start on PS4.

However, SCE America CEO Jack Tretton said in June that quality is more important than getting to market first, stating: "We've never been first, we've never been cheapest, it's about being best."

EA Labels president Frank Gibeau suggested last week that Xbox 720 and PS4 are due to launch "in about a year's time". More recently, he labelled next gen consoles the company's currently making games for "spectacular".

And Oskari Hakkinen, head of franchise development at Remedy, said last month that the next gen consoles his studio's also developing for represent "a quantum leap" from those currently available.

Quick google:
But those next generation consoles? “We can’t really talk too much about next generation console plans,” said Kotick when asked by those on the investment conference call, “but I think it’s safe to say you have a Wii U coming out and there will be another new console coming and we expect that they’ll be very successful.”

This could however be "Oh you know more about new consoles than we do" shenanigans and he just doesn't want to be so bold in identifying the two obvious companies to release new consoles. I assume thats what it means anyway.

I was thinking more just murmurings we'd had on gaf and this I think, Gamespot CEO:
"The Wii U, we expect it at holiday," CEO Paul Raines told Polygon. "This week, I'm getting a lot of rumours that are very interesting about 2013.

“We have not been expecting two more consoles in 2013. We're expecting Wii U this holiday, another one next year, and another one in '14. These rumours change every week, but we're hearing more about next year.”
