Just got back from my action movie of the year and popcorn flick of the summer...

man o man they don't make them like that anymore. Pure unadulterated cheese fun on the same level of independence day.

so fucking awesome.

Convinced some co-workers to see it on Tuesday after paintball. Gonna see it in IMAX.

This is one of the most pretentious things I have ever read.
I was going to quote his avy after reading the first comment. It's exactly what I'd expect such a fanboy to say.

Just got out of an IMAX 3D showing, have to say Im not disappointed. Action scenes were amazing, im sure this has already been covered. Predictable and shallow, sure, but it's definitely a good time. I only wished it left some room for a possible sequel. I loved the kaiju designs, unfortunately my Regal cinema didnt get any of the Shinkawa posters, but I did get the regular and IMAX posters.

7.5/10, Pacific Rim delivers!

My higher faculties had a few complaints, most of them minor. The rest of my brain was transfixed by the giant robuts and monsters and I was wearing a mile-wide grin the entire time.

Amazing film, I can definitely imagine this being one I'll see in theaters multiple times.

Haha, that's interesting. Maybe it's because I have been playing the masterpiece that is The Last of Us for a few weeks now and am still riding the high of the incredible voice acting/story/script, but I just couldn't stand what I was watching. It was painful, especially because it crossed that border into being so stupid that it wasn't even funny.

I'll most likely end up seeing it again with a bit more rest and a better mindset, and will hopefully enjoy at least the ending action sequences everybody seems to be hyping up.

You are a human joke who wouldn't understand fun if it delivered a visceral, cinematic, emotionally gripping, Oscar-worthy punch to your face. Please don't spread such nonsense.

ALL of them? Dude's gonna make bank now. Unless they terminate him because of this.

I caved and bought the other poster from eBay. I might have one of the Yoji Shinkawa left over to give away if my friend was able to get the poster himself.

Considering they're selling from 20 - 40 bucks on ebay, there's not doubt they'll make at least a little coin.

That shouldn't even be allowed. If I were a fan enough and went there, I would have probably asked to speak with a manager about it.

I did and they apologized but that was about the extent of it. I think there's a few more Regals around me so I'll try and see if they have anything. Maybe I can just show a ticket stub and they'll hook me up.

Yes, that is Egoraptor and Jontron.

I'm seeing some Twitter friends saying pretty much the same things Rokker and Skiesofwonder are.

So what. They all count in the ticket sales anyway. Sorta like those Miami Heat "fans" who were clearing the building before the final buzzer sounded in game 6 of the Finals. Whoops just missed the best part, apparently. No movie has ever been liked by everyone. Different strokes and all. The movie scored well enough among mainstream reviewers. The response has been overwhelmingly positive here because frequenters of this forum are the target demographic. I just hope that it ultimately does well enough so that this genre can get more movies made.

Don't bother, you don't deserve to see the rest of it...

Seems I've stirred the shit enough. Apparantly I'm not allowed to not enjoy things.

Have a good one.

Peace be with you. May the forces of evil become confused on the way to your house.

Please return to give full impressions if you ever do go back to see the entire film.

I just think it's crazy that essentially we have a big budget live action anime film.

Still trying to process this information.

is "the last of us ruined pacific rim" the new "the last of us ruined video games"? ugh.

The Citizen Kane of videogames strikes again. Is there anything it won't ruin? I know that after playing it I can't ever have burgers again, only expensive and tasty steaks.

I do not take away your enjoyment, you give it willingly in exchange for one more cine-game in a pretentious little prison of your own design.

Just walked out after an hour. I've never walked out of a movie before.

Stupidest fucking thing ever. Maybe I was too tired to just shut my brain off and enjoy the monsters and killing, but the acting and story were just too embarrassing to watch.

lol apparently it's harder to turn off your brain and sit back when you're tired.

Cool guy though.

Wikipedia is not a good source for facts.
It doesn't say Man of Steel is a shit movie on wikipedia. :p

Even if you think Man of Steel is a good movie, there's no question that the trailer was much better than Pacific Rim's. It builds and feels like its own little submovie, with its own climax in the flying scene.

Pacific Rim's main theme isn't anywhere near the best theme of a movie I've watched, but it would have certainly made the trailer more distinctive and fun.

Well, you're allowed to not enjoy things, but just as you're free to post about how you didn't enjoy it, others are free to then comment upon your lack of enjoyment. Because, you know, public forum and all that.

Pacific Rim is many things, some of which you may strongly dislike. Convoluted is not one of them.

I strongly disagree. Pacific Rim is very hard follow. Just because the movie was mostly shit blowing up doesn't change the fact that it throws a ton of complex ideas at you with very little explanation.

they jump right into the two partner method of Jäger control without much explanation. They never really explan how the drift function works, and just assume that the audience will understand how it can negatively effect a pilot if used incorrectly. Outside of two pilots connecting brains and controlling a giant mech together, they have giant monsters coming from a rift (black hole?) in the ocean to colonize planet Earth, scientists drifting with monsters to read their mind, Giant fucking mechs controlled by your mind and movements (yet somehow damage to the mech equals damage to that part of your body?), etc. with very little explanation. On top of that, the basic plot has Mako jumping in and out of being the partner for the lead character, the scientists seeing something (that we don't see) that reveals the true method of the monsters, characters dying with barely even a mention of their death after, a second plan to stop the Monsters that is only mentioned in name yet is replacing the Jäger plan, multi-ton mechs being transported across sea by planes in the blink of an eye, etc.

I think in many ways it's good that the movie doesn't try to explain all that crazy shit but damn at least try to make some type of sensible way to introduce those concepts if you are going make them such a central part of your plot.

Oh hell yeah, total agreement here. I always rolled my eyes every time Pacific Rim's trailers would show up in the theater. Both MOS' trailer 2 and 3 are perfect.

Can You Imagine What SureAI Is Going To Do With Garfield?
I wonder what they were expecting about a movie with robots vs monsters?
Doesn't mean it can't have interesting characters.

I personally can't judge the movie until I see it. I'm just saying I see a lot of people mentioning that the issue seems to be dull characters and bad acting. For me, dull characters can sometimes break a movie even one with tons of good FX and action.

But I'll reserve judgement. I still really want to see it since it has themes similar to Cloverfield and The Mist, two movies I really enjoyed. I'd probably be one of the few nutballs rooting for the monsters.

In his defence, the story is not good and neither is the acting. Plenty of character stupidity, plot holes and logical issues with wooden performances and clichéd lines

I found it hard to look past when there's so much of it. I really did try, but there are some hefty gaps between action where nothing of interest happens.

How about them fake aussies
Fuck that was annoying

I understand Australians and everyone do US/British accents too in films but it was irksome it being the other way round. There's plenty of good, tough looking Aussie actors in Hollywood, why not go for the real deal and get a more realistic accent

Besides that distracting factor it was fun.

Pacific Rim is an above average movie that packs enough fun and action in it to be worth your money.

While the plot isn't anything to write home about (unless you're saying - damn.. this is the plot?), the movie makes it pretty clear very early on (like in the first 10 seconds) that it is about robots and giant monsters and that's it. The story telling has its moments but gets a bit tired mid movie as it tries to add some meat to a very simple story. You could have cut 1/3rd of the movie's running time and still have been just fine. The best part is that the movie doesn't try to take itself too seriously and is more of a fun adventure than anything more "realistic".

The movie sports some of the best visuals for a movie of this genre and doesn't try to get overly flashy with blinding lens flares or tons of explosions. The actual feel of scale works pretty well. Again, the look isn't one of super realistic as there is a bit of anime morning cartoon design feel to everything... and it works.

If you're taking little ones - there are some points where you will run across the occasional bitch or ass (it is PG-13). There is some light cursing here and there, but no hardcore sex (or anything nearing it). If your kids get particularly afraid of monsters there is limited cause for alarm, but even for my 5/6 year olds it was pretty okay.

5 year old daughter - loved it. She and I were in the neural bridge throughout the movie.
6 year old son - was partial to it. I think it exceeded his running time since it got very "wordy" during the mid movie when there was limited action.
Dad - enjoyed it. Wouldn't mind seeing it again with the right crew of adults.

Solid 7-8/10 material.

How was I supposed to feel about the giant robots, man? How was I supposed to feel at all? I can't feel without QTEs, artificial tragedy, gut-wrenching contrivances, and SERIOUS APOCALYPTIC MAGNITUDE OF SERIOUS SERIOUSNESS. Sure, The Last of Us was no less ridiculous than Pacific Rim, but tragedy is FOR ADULTS and action/adventure is for fucking children. You should be ashamed of yourself if you felt any enjoyment at something so juvenile.

0/10, shit movie, would not watch again, would not compare to Citizen Kane.

Where was the "bitch"? I only remembered two swears in the movie: The
"kick his ass"
in the dining room and
"Where's my Goddamn shoe?" after the credits
.

Stupid trivia but they Ron Perlman's hideout/set was used in last years, Total Recall.
No wonder nobody but you recognized it. :p

Reusing sets is generally a good idea, IMO. It saves money in the long run if you build a good, reusable set.

When the walls opened up slowly to reveal Charlie Day after meeting the monster, he shouts,

The five minute explanation was like "hey lets explain all this crazy shit so we can get it out of the way and smash shit without all this really mattering" yet it wasn't that way at all
Drifting was a major part of the plot and it was hardly explained at all

well not really...yet
The whole opening montage was fucking terrible. Complete bush league stuff. Stilted dialog by the main character and terribad pacing.

The movie was legit awful until the Hong Kong stuff started

All of that is EXACTLY why this movie worked. They didn't waste time to explain things that were just going to end up being shitty. They didn't waste time trying to give shitty characters depth. This is where movies like Transformers falls down. No one fucking cares about the wheres and whys, and you trying to explain it to us just makes it even worse. Pacific Rim shows you the pieces, then turns em loose.

Mostly because an explanation is largely irrelevant and unnecessary for the progression of the story and about as useful as explaining how warp drive works in Star Trek or explaining that the Force is microscopic bacteria. Its a fantasy world and they tell you the rules of that world and never violate it. Its about as useful as trying to explain why they are running on diesel engines, why there is a big twirling blade beneath the pilots, why no other units run on nuclear reactors - and if they don't what powers them, why Pentecost would die from piloting a jaeger if all of the newer ones have radiation shielding, etc.

There is absolutely nothing convoluted about Pacific Rim whatsoever unless you absolutely need to get an explanation of all of the rules and mechanics of their fantasy world in order to be able to follow the story.

I thought the explanation to all those things was very simple:

It is established that the neural link with the robot is too much for one person to handle, so 2 people do it best in a right/left hemisphere way. They meld memories to create a bond and synchronize their movements, and obviously, they are both inside each others head, so emotional states affect their control.
They say explicitly the rift is a portal between 2 dimensions, ours and the kaiju's.
The damage on the body is due to the rigs used to control them. The rigs simulate the physicality of the outside world, so the pilots can feel the ground beneath the mecha's feet, or the feedback on a punch. They pull the pilots around, so of course brisk movements are going to fuck them up.
Characters dying are mentioned, but the kaijus will keep coming, so like Elba's character says: we lost them, but there is no time to grieve. This is actual dialogue acknowledging their deaths.
The plan changes when the scientists drift again and realize through watching the kaijus memories about the DNA code thing needed to open the portal. I don't understand how you miss these details. The only "memory" we see up close is Mako's when she was a child, but the mind-melding process visually shows a lot of things being transmitted between the connected parties, so we are expected to understand a lot of information exchanged heads by only showing a few seconds of random images popping up-

A lot of the things you talk about are conveyed visually and in a fast way. I think the point you are trying to make is that they don't go out and inform you about them explicitly through expository dialogue, which would've been a terrible decision and boring as fuck. I didn't find any of those things hard to follow, in fact they were very simple and basic, even cliched, and I think that is precisely why so many have complained about the story. /Shrugs,

Just saying, I've noticed some pretty insane hyperbole over this movie in some reviews and in forums.
I agree that the talky bits could get kinda dull and the battles could have been a bit longer and more complex. Also, seeing this movie in IMAX 3D really greatly amplifies the experience.
