Having second thoughts about getting a PS4 during the launch

Gamers are so strange sometimes. After bitching an crying that this gen was too long and we are getting tired of it, finally next gen are on horizon and ...guess what?

I have huge backlog, I don't see reason to upgrade....and other reasons.

The industry is gonna die by its enthusiasts, if we don't buy the new hardware as it arrives..no body will.

If we don't take risks, again...nobody will.

I will be there DAY 1 for next gen, I don't care about anything else....its not like PS4 or X1 are priced at $10000 or more, PS4 is just a mere 399 for gods sake, even if it breaks the next day...go buy another one.....so cheap its unbelievable.

WiiU is suffering the same way....wait for the games to come and because of that an entire company is about to collapse....strange world indeed.

I'm not willing to wait 2 years for a $50 price cut. There isn't much I'm dying to play but I'll probably rent a lot of stuff.

Well given that its supposedly "about the games" I'm amazed there's many people at all pre ordering the PS4.

Ordering doesn't cost anything. I ordered both X1 and PS4 when they were still known as Durango and Orbis (around November 2012) and there wasn't any real information about the actual machine, games or anything really. Since then it has been just waiting, following news and evaluating the need for such order. Anyway, for me, it's definitely about the games after I got my PC upgraded on April. And when you have good PC then there aren't a reason to get PS4 before there are some interesting exclusives available.

Yes, because tha's the problem :/ Nothing to do with the console being underpowered, not particularly catered for online gaming, on top of there being no software, it's all our fault. Why didn't we see this sooner?

Haha exactly, this is precisely why I'm waiting outside of Best Buy all day/night (if necessary) to get mine on day one. I was so jealous when I saw the huge line outside of my local Best Buy for the PS3 launch. It was like someone kicked me in the stomach, I wanted to be a part of that. Not going to miss it this time around.

i figure that infamous is early 2014

the console will still be full price

I might as well go ahead and get it at launch to not have to deal with set up or anything when infamous comes out and just buy it and start playing it

Glad you are taking the risk for us. And... I don't know how to put this, I mean no offence, but you sound a little bit ridiculous talking about $400 being so cheap it is inconsequential. It is not.

Some people don't see the need to upgrade right now. I know I don't. I rather spend my $400 in beer and in games for the systems I already own right now. That is all. If the PS4 falls under it wont be because I did not buy it, I'm sure of it.

I believe you mean my comments about WiiU, if so then....I believe there is a lot of Nintendo fanboys out there, they particularly don't care much about graphics or online much...and yet a lot of them are holding back on buying WiiU for the time being...that caused a lot of problems fo Nintendo and it might lead to their demise forever.

but we gamers are so melodramatic and we usually don't value thing untill we lose it fotever ( DC for example), So when we lose WiiU or PS4 we will start crying about how great those system were....and ..bla....bla

My point is....show your support, buy the damn hardware.

I personally wouldn't wait until the PS4 has a decent catalog of games available.
If I get mine on day one I can enjoy the good games as they steadily release. If I hold out for a year or so I would probably be overwhelmed by the amount of choice I have.
It's like jumping into a new console with a huge potential backlog waiting for you.
Why would I do that to myself? :P

I'll buy the PS4 when a game I'm interested in comes out for it. I loved the old InFamous games, but this one I'm not too fond of so far. I have no doubt I'll play it, just not in a "Holy-God-I-Need-This-In-My-Veins" kind of way.

Plus GTAV in like a month. That should keep me occupied.

Personally I'll be getting an Xbox One first for both gaming and reviewing, and eventually a PlayStation 4 afterwards, but if I didn't require these for work, I don't think I'd be getting them for some time. Almost all the multi-platform games coming out at the end of this year have a PC date, and will most likely offer the most polished version on that platform.

I don't see any reason to upgrade if the games aren't there, even for the "shiny" hardware that it will offer. If you are buying just for hardware, that is perfectly fine and honestly good for you, but in the end won't it just sit there, waiting for a game that you want to play? Why bother now when you know that the system will still be there by the time you've got the game you want.

If I was in your shoes OP, I would wait. If nothing on either launch lineup is interesting to you, then why bother? Why let it collect dust until something comes out, when you can enjoy your backlog or the multi-platform games coming out this year on something else?

Interestingly, as a side note, I have a feeling a percentage (most likely a small one at that) of gamers will hold off on initial purchases because most games coming out within the first year are multi-platform third party titles. All the big games will be coming out everywhere while companies move into the bigger budgets of next-gen, so unless its something as significant as BF4 with 64 players on PC and next-gen, I wouldn't really see the motive to move over to next-gen until we see true next-gen focused titles. Ones built from the ground up on next-gen hardware like Naughty Dog or CD Projekt.

If that's how you feel OP, then just don't get one until there are games you need to play. Simple as that.

I'll be there day one. The current gen feels so old and tired and I'm hungry for new hardware.

Just wait until next year. Sony and Microsoft both had lots of hardware issues with launch consoles last Gen anyways. Best to wait it out for better software

I agree with the post that many of the ps4 launch games will be on pc, and look and run better on PC. Wait until there are a handful of exclusives

I understand that some people might need the money for something else, or might prefer to spend it somewhere else....but I just really hate the idea that after see dozens of threads or articles about how long this gen was...someone would post something like this!

I'm just a guy who loves this industry, seeing people preaching and promoting the idea of holding back and "wait" for a price drop ....or whatever reason just irritate me....OK if you are gonna hold back on your purchase then stop preaching this....the industry is in its weakest state as of now.

This is gaming forums..and a big one, we should be excited for next gen, not the opposite.

I feel the opposite. I'm just putting the finishing touches on the last of us now and I think that will be the perfect way to send off this gen. I'm positive that I won't play a better game on ps3, and I'm ready to see what the next gen has in store for us. Super hyped for infamous and bf4/FIFA will keep me entertained until then even if the next gen launch lineup is devoid of any really enticing exclusives

Not being excited for something is also part of being a gaming forum, too.

OP, you've made an intelligent purchasing decision, nothing that you should feel weird about. There's no games that are exciting yet. It would be weird to want to buy it now if you're not interested in the software.

Yet again, the internet making people feel weird for actually being logical.

I have the cash and love playing with new tech, plus I love the KZ series so its a no brainer for me. That said, if you're not that taken with the launch line up then wait, it will only get cheaper.

Kinda feel the same. I may cancel my PS4 pre-order before launch if no new launch games are announced at Gamesom/TGS and get a Wii U instead and wait until next year for a PS4.

I swear we'll see once again boring threads about consoles collecting dusts and new "no gamez" memes from the same people buying at launch.
Getting a 400€+ new toy is all there is to it for a lot of people, unfortunately.

if you have a pre order, then do not cancel it. by the time the system about to be released you will get all hyped again. right now its almost dead for both xbox one and PS4 since there are new news. and everything we have seen are from early builds.

cancel your pre order and you will regret it.

wait till the last month/couple of weeks then decide then.

^This.

This is how I look at it

--> Am I mostly sick and tired of this generation? Yes
--> Is the PS4 at a price that I feel comfortable buying at launch? Yes
--> Is that price at a point that waiting for a price drop would be too long? Yes

Yes to all 3. What's the point of waiting if I have the money right now? I know the games will come, and I'd rather not wait and spend more up front later on when I want the console + 5 games instead of buying the console and getting games as they release.

ive been thinking about using the money for a hoilday instead. Basically gamescom and tgs will dictate if i keep my preorder or not. To be fair with PS+ I know there will always be something to play.

I'm not buying a product if it's a bad product, simple as. If you want to take out graphics and online, question why arn't these so called fanboys picking up the console yet? The right software is not being produced. I can tell you why I haven't bought a Wii-U (beisdes the points I mentioned) Nintendo are not making the software I want them to make. I want F-Zero, I want Metroid, I want Wave Race, I want Earthbound. What are we getting? Donkey Kong (while good, the timing is not right for it), an uninspired Mario (no one asked for more 3D Mario Land on home consoles, no one).Even titles I love like Wario they ballsed up too. I'm voting with my wallet, if they want my money they need to start selling to people like me.

As for Sega, the reasons they went under was much more than people not buying software, management issues became a huge factor into their downfall.

I think this is an interesting comment. If enough people decide to wait and see, which is what could be happening for the Wii U, the system will fail.

As someone who has bought a Wii U, though, I think that it doesn't exactly deserve success.

PS3 has such an awesome amount of games hitting, coupled with cross gen titles and free online that it's probably smarter to wait on a next gen system.

But, in my case my PS4 is paid off, as is Battlefield 4, PS+ (haven't activated it yet), and half of Ghosts. Might as well jump in on next gen, and since I now have a U I'll be finished with system purchases and can just wait for the games to start rolling in.

We're still a few months away from launch, but I'm starting to get really excited. Actually I'm trying not to buy anymore games until PS4 shows up, and instead am looking to clear my backlog as muc as possible.

I have the money, I don't want to have to deal with shortages, I'm tired of the current consoles, I want the next gen version of BF and Infamous SS is a must buy.

No brain-er for me, the low entry price helps a ton.

Earlier this year I really got into board gaming which opened up a wealth of new experiences that I'd never had before, I've already put a lot of my new consoles/games budget towards board games and with Oculus Rift on the horizon I wouldn't be surprised if I leave console gaming for a year or two; board games and OR give me something truly fresh and exciting.

I am getting one at day one, why?
To be honest pure desire to get finally a next gen console, even if Sony is stronlgy supporting the ps3, i am fed up of the kind of fidelty that box can offer.
Second i can get the best versions of cross gen games.

Well given that its supposedly "about the games" I'm amazed there's many people at all pre ordering the PS4.
You know, opinions and all. For instance there's absolutely no exclusives on the XBOne that I give a toss about. But I'm psyched for Killzone and super-psyched for Infamous.

My top two favorite franchises, Battlefield and FIFA, are launch titles with major visual upgrades over the previous console generation. In addition, I can't wait to play Killzone and Drive Club. Easiest launch console decision I have ever made.

I never buy consoles at launch. "Earliest" console I ever got was a 3DS a month after its price drop. Usually those first year droughts are killer, and you never really know what can happen down the road, such as price drops and remodels and such. No point in not waiting a year when the thing can be on sale for cheap and has a few more good games out for it. Plus, I have a mild distrust of Sony after how they handled the Vita pre-launch. It wouldn't surprise me if they are sitting on some very disappointing PS4 announcements to be revealed in a couple months.

I'm buying it for NBA 2K14, and the desire to see it in a new console generation!

And I'm really excited about ACIV, and inFamous when it does come out.

OP I think you will have a change of heart when you see the games up and running. If you're saving money then fine but come the last fe weeks before launch with people actually playing the games you will start to feel that gamers twinge.

This is kind of how I'm feeling right now. I'm actually considering building myself a gaming PC in the interim, which should be able to get me through the next few years of multiplats, and then picking up a PS4 basically whenever the next Naughty Dog game is released.

The benefit of having a PC too is that the multiplats will probably look better, and I'll be able to play Titanfall, which I wouldn't be able to play if I only owned a PS4.

Still have my pre order in place but will most likely drop it if I manage to make a $500 Steambox.
I don't need it to be as powerful as the ps4 but want to ensure it is quiet and viable to run games for many years.

Might need the only way I actually tackle the massive backlog I have.

I agree with the op that the launch titles are very underwhelming. When I made my order I actually thought infamous was a launch title

I think the best time to jump in is when Destiny and inFamous come out. That's when I am getting mine so around middle of next year. Will also pick up some launch games too if they got good reviews. Hopefully there will also be a few PSN+ games and F2P games as well by the time I get mine. In the meantime I am going to continue my backlog on PS3.

I need to get in on the free PSN+ games from day one.

I also don't think we'll see a price change anytime within the next couple years.

I've got a PS4 preordered, and I too am not interested in any of the games announced so far, so PSN+ stuff is all I'm looking forward to.

EDIT: I agree with Dr. Katz in the post after this.
