Having second thoughts about getting a PS4 during the launch

If you have PS+, are already planning on getting a PS4 at some point, and are not cash starved, I don't see much reason to wait. Driveclub as a tech demo will be free, lots of f2p games available to download, indie titles for cheap, etc. Then maybe the reviews and forum praise of one of the games will catch your eye enough.

It's not like buying it means it must immediately replace your current gen system in the entertainment center.
 
ive got one on order, and fully planned on getiing one day one. But am now considering waiting till around april 2014 so that i can finish GTAV kingdom hearts 1.5, beyond, FFX/X-2 HD, and (whisper it) lightining returns, as all these interest me more than the launch titles apart from watch dogs, which can wait.....though knowing me il probably cave in and grab it day one still lol
 
PS4 is going to be the first console I will be getting Day One.

I'm ready for a new console, new hardware, new menu and better looking games in a console. I already have PS + which means I will be getting Drive Club and some indies (despite already owning Don't Starve on Steam).

I can see myselft getting a Multiplayer FPS (BF4/COD) simply because I know it will last me a long time. Then I can always buy another title but at least Drive Club will be there for my racing needs.

My Backlog is decent. Still have a great selection of game to finish/start atleast on Steam and the Vita.

I sold many PS3 & 360 games I no longer care/finished/won't replay etc. With this I got:

- More space since I love a clean minimalistic setup and I don't want many consoles in my space.
- Less clutter such plastic cases.
- More store credit for the PS4. It's not that I can't buy one Day one, but if I can get rid of stuff I don't want and get money towards a brand new console, why not? It's the best deal for me.

Gamescom is coming and I'm curious for more stuff, let's hope for the best, but either way I'm ready and happy for this new gen that is about to start for me with the PS4 fellow GAFfer.
 
I'm wrestling with a lot of what you're saying too. I have an enormous backlog of titles that I could never finish in a lifetime. I have stopped buying lots of games that I normally would have (Pikmin 3 being a prime example) due to the size of my backlog.

Not sure that I can stay away from the release hype though.

Hell, I may even end up with a PS4 and an Xbox One lol.
 
Gamescom's coming soon, I'm sure hype levels will rise again for many. Personally I can't wait for launch day to come around, had my pre order in since May 29th.
 
I'm certainly not gonna wait for shit.

I buy all my games at launch as its the only way I can feasibly play all the great games I wanna play for any given platform.

As a gen progresses, the rapidity of game releases increases and I find I cannot keep up and start building a backlog. That's fine 4-5 years in, but not when I first buy a console.

I wanna be able to participate in the gaming discussions about the newly released games as and when they come out. I don't wanna have to buy my console and have 2-3 years worth of games to catch up on when everyone else is busy talking about the newest stuff.

I wanna be out on the fringes, a pioneer, ready to test first hand the Hazes from the Uncharteds.

So yeah OP, sucks to be you. I see enough games that appeal to me already, even just in the 3rd party stuff, thats before you even start talking about KZ:SF and InFamous:SS. Good times ahead for me.
 
I have a huge backlog of games I've yet to play. There's also no launch games I need to play. I'm pretty happy with current gen games graphics. Give me my favorite games in 1080p60fps and that's the next gen console I'm buying when the time comes.

I actually agree with this, and your previous posts in this thread. The games follow the hardware sales, and the sooner the next gen consoles get a decent install base, the sooner we will stop getting up-rezzed version of last gen games, and actually start to see games that are made for the PS4/Xbox One.

And a point I think isn't being stressed enough is that for once, the consoles are quite affordable. Cheap even. So I'm not sure waiting for the price drop, which might take a while anyway, is worthwhile.

Us hardcore gamers should vote with our wallets! If you are planning to buy the machine anyway, I don't think you should bother waiting so long.

Personally I'm facing a bigger issue than most people in this thread. I'm also doubting my preorder, but that's because I'm increasingly becoming convinced that PC gaming only is the right path for me.

My Xbox and PS3 have both been dusting lately, while my awesome gaming PC, hooked up wirelessly to my living room and rocking Steam big picture mode, has been in almost constant use.

For me it's not a factor of cost. But I hate to buy something that will just be hooked up to my TV without being used, dusting down. My Xbox 360 has gone from being my go to device for nearly every game, to not being used at all. (Which kind of sucks, because I re-bought the 360 after my second red ring of death. A waste.)

But I really don't want to be one of those PC-only boring guys. Would someone please re-convince me to buy a PS3? :P

I will be casually assessing other consumers

-actively engaging in pre judgement (predicting what games other folk will purchase. ..and then finding out how wrong I was)

-Looking at the faces and listen to the talk of unbridled hype and plans that folks will implement to skip work or school.

-Trying to stay cool while wishing that I could teleport to my couch the second I pick up the bag handles.

-The giddy and jeally feeling of watching other folk get to their car screaming "F@$k YEAH!"

-Getting home ..and doing my best to open the box extra carefully - justifying my age and paying homage to patience...gritting my teeth.

-Going through initial configuration; knowing that millions are doing the same thing ...at the same time.

-And picking the game that I will experience first:
KZ? I have around 15 psn friends that will be playing it on the night of purchase.
Knack? Awesome isolation and the wonderment of original platforming in 2013. Or
Watch Dogs? The E3 hype still has me shook.

This is what next gen DAY ONE is guys (if you can afford it). It's like going to Disney World for the first time every 6-7 years.

The hardware will be fine. I'm picking up a PS4; Sony releases great day one consoles so no worries here.
The games will be available (with much more to come/be announced). I'll have more than enough to play in addition to PSN Plus.


I can't wait!
 
Ya I canceled my pre orders for both PS4 and Xbox One. I like many got caught up in the hype train, but the more info that comes out about both the more I realize I would rather wait and just play multi-platform games on my new pc.
 
I feel the same way as the OP. Not getting an XONE for the games but rather to replace my Win8 HTPC.

Console launches are nothing but safe .5 upgrades that are held back by current gen ports. These consoles are too expensive to drop a minimum of $400 for upgraded ports.

I'd agree with this. Wait for Gamescom, then decide. Leaving your preorder there isn't hurting anyone, so I'd wait until the last second possible to cancel personally.
 
I'm sure that there will be great exclusives in the first two years after the launch and because of that - why wait? It won't get a price cut before 2015 and a redesign before 2017 probably. I'm there day one'ish - probably closer to Second Son release date.
 
I don't have a preorder and don't plan to. Maybe my hype is through the roof when it releases and then I'll see if I can buy one. If I can't then tough luck, but I factored it in. Like those postcode lotteries where the entire town wins millions and you are the only one who didn't participate. It's okay and no regrets, because I purposefully chose not to do it.

The release games are simply shaping up to be less good than the backlog I can get for cheap. The only thing that would make me bite unconditionally is if Naughty Dog announces that they're going to port over The Last of Us for launch. Otherwise I might as well sooner get a Wii U for W101, Pikmin and Mario 3D World.

For the PS4 I'll likely wait until The Witness arrives.

It's a day one for me, no question !

I want a PS4 so bad !

Can't miss Killzone SF and eventually Infamous in 2014. + the better version of multiplatform games like COD Ghost and Battlefield 4.

I'm tired of this gen, i just want to play the new consoles asap !
 
I`m also thinking about my pre order, if I should cancel it or not...

I had to import my ps4 from amazon, which costs me 430$ just for taxes fees...

Though, when the console launches in my country, it will be around 1000$ -.-

I`m really thinking if I should cancel the pre order or not =/
 
There is absolutely nothing I want at launch. I'm waiting.
PS3 is still going strong enough for me to care, honestly
 
I canceled my launch pre-order. GTA V and Batman Arkham Origins not on next gen consoles sealed the deal for me. I will purchase a PS4 when Sucker Punch says so. Till then I have the aforementioned games to look forward to along with TWD season 2 and Hotline Miami sequel.
 
Day 1 preordered. I've never bought a console at launch for it's stellar lineup. I buy them at launch because I am excited for the new tech, I want to play with the UI, the controller, and be able to add to the discussion. I realize it's a bit of a gamble, but I don't give a shit, I'm still using my launch PS3.
 
If I could afford it and NOT get murdered by the wife I'd definately get one, day 1, but it looks like I'll be getting it three months later during tax return time... I mean Killzone Day 1... Hell yeah

Be careful with FIFA. People that already saw the game (not play) are not really impressed with the game. (Apparently Madden for next-gen is even worse...). Still early though so they have time to fix it.
 
ps4 ALMOST had me for my first day one console...just can't pull the trigger knowing how the business operates and whats to come down the line.


also i enjoy staying 6-12 months behind the software calender as it keeps my backlog down ( not buying up any and every game) and substantially cheaper games/ included DLC editions
 
crap launch lineup and more exclusive content for cod/bf4 on the xbone have me also debating to ebay the ps4 and wait it out a few months or to simply roll the dice and get killzone and watchdogs and wait it out
 
I remember camping overnight at my local best buy parking lot in 20 degree weather to get a launch 360. It was insane and I ended up getting sick as a dog the next day. This time will be much easier. I have the PS4 launch edition preordered on Amazon. So excited!
 
At this point in time, I'll definitely be keeping my X1 pre-order and give up the PS4 one. I'll pick one up when a game I truly can't ignore comes out, something by Naughty Dog most likely.

With the backlog I have on 360/PC/PS3, I don't need either the X1/PS4 right of the bat tbh.

Rule of thumb with EA sports games. Avoid the next gen versions for 3-4 years while they figure out the new consoles. Madden 06, 07, and 08 were all terrible on 360/PS3.
 
I have similar thoughts, but about the XBox One actually.

I have both consoles already preordered, PS4 is already paid off with gift cards on Amazon, I just feel like do I really need both? So I am contemplating cancelling my XBox One preorder, but I will probably just keep both.

Thing is I am almost 40 years old. I make a good decent living. Gaming is my preferred hobby. So money is not really the issue (fortunately).

And for those who say if you already own a PC there is no real point in owning any of the consoles, I say nonsense.

There are several (what I believe to be very legit and practical) reasons why I now prefer console gaming to PC gaming (and I also have a very capable gaming PC), and they are as follows...
  • I work on a computer all day. Coming home and sitting in front of one after working is extremely hard for me to motivate myself to do.
  • I do not have a low profile gaming PC. I have a huge nice Thermaltake case. My wife is not having me keep my case in our TV Room with what she already believes is a cluttered mess just because I have all my consoles setup.
  • Speaking of setups, my TV room setup is much nicer than my office. 55" HDTV. 7.1 Surround Sound. I took upwards of a year and purchased individual components as I could, and it formed into one hell of an entertainment experience. Sitting on my couch and playing a game as compared to sitting on a chair in my office, no real comparision.
  • As already mentioned in my above point. The couch. It is now my own personal island getaway for gaming. After a long day at work, nothing beats the couch. Well maybe my bed, but the WiiU GamePad did not reach upstairs to my bedroom.
  • Last but not least. I am actually on Doctors orders to lean towards consoles. Not kidding. I have DeQuarvain's tendonitis, it is wrist issues is the short story, have had it for over 8 years now, and fortunately for myself, using a controller only aggravates it slightly. Using a mouse, well the pain can become unbearable at times.

So all of the above are why someone may prefer gaming on a console compared to gaming on the PC. And believe me, I absolutely know PC gaming is superior to console gaming in all regards, anyone who tries to argue it is not I know is either clearly biased and/or has never actually gamed on a PC.
 
I'm somewhat in the same boat. So far, the only reason I have a PS4 preordered is for one game only: Battlefield 4. I'm not really interested in any of the other games (or at least, not $60 interested) so I find it hard to justify a very expensive purchase for one game =/
 
Can't really blame you. As excited as I am about the PS4 and the next-gen in general, I'm far more excited about it's potential than any of the actual launch titles. Having just one fighter confirmed in the first year between the PS4 and the Xone makes it hard to get super excited.

Beyond that, there's always the potential for early manufacturing problems causing hardware issues. I've gotten burned on that in several generations. Plus Gaikai isn't going to be up and running until next year, and a lot of the most exciting titles are either current or cross-gen.

Sony is right that this is the best launch line-up they've had on a console yet...but having gotten all of their game platforms that's really not saying much. :p
 
If you are looking at multi-platform games then its not bad at launch, but if you have pc and/ or only want platform exclusives then you should consider waiting till the library becomes more appealing.
 
I'm buying a £350 console, I'm buying it for proper games, not cheap indie games where most suck except in a rare case. I may well wait till after Christmas and beyond, GT6 and GTA V will satiate me until KH3, FFXV, and Titanfall port come out.
 
I'm not buying at launch and for me it's an easy decision, my most anticipated games for the next 8 months are current gen only and I have a PC for multiplats anyway.

I'm stoked can't wait, watch dogs gonna look sick on ps4. I could get it for pc, but I do like to trade in my games when I'm done with them. I'll just rebuy watchdogs during a steam sale with all the DLC.

Yea, to me right now it's a nobrainer.
 
With the money I would have to spend on the PS4 alone I can buy 8 - 10 games for my Wii U (more if I count cheaper eShop games) that will last until next year. If I take into account that there is not a single game (from the launch lineup) that interests me, I will not buy a PS4 at launch. Actually, I haven't bought a launch console since the Gamecube and it's the best choice I ever made.

Personally I can't wait, fantastic upgrade and a few exclusives thrown in to boot...I mean, looking at games like BF4, AC & watchdogs - I can't be bothered with all that PC messing about.

Yep, I find these kinds of threads semi redundant. Everyone in the history of makind goes through some form of self questioning about things like this. I am more than confident in PS4 and it's ability to deliver on the games. Much more than PS3.

We could argue this for Xbone as well.

If you feel like there isn't enough for you there then you shouldn't waste your money. If I were you, I would ditch buying current gen versions of these games though as they will be better on next gen. For me, most of those will be bought on PC anyways but if I had the choice between the PS3 or PS4 version, I think you know which way I would lean.

I'm tired of this gen as well even though there has been some stellar games (particularly on PS3) this last year.

Bring on the PS4. The world is ready for another great Playstation platform.
