Just bought a Wii U. Surprisingly, there were no shortages.

Which controller is the best for MH Wii U? Can you play with the gamepad?

Gamepad is amazing, you get the same second screen from the 3ds version that allows you to put stuff there like the hp bar or the map, so the main screen can be hudless or have everything. Also offscreen is supported after patching the game and you can send the music to the gamepad instead of the tv (to use earphone in both off screen and normal mode) which is amazing.

If you want to play over 3.5 hours seasons every time you may want to get a pro controler as the battery is not that good, and you can mix and match, having the hud on the pad while playing with the pro controler.

You can get a refurbished Remote Plus and matching Nunchuk for ~$20 on their site. They work perfectly for me.

Yeah I bought one of those too. Thing is, I already have four Wiimotes so I don't want any more Wiimotes in the house.

Do those Club Nintendo club have expiration dates? And what can one get from them?

I have had Club Nintendo codes lying around since I bought my Wii U in August and with some games but I never thought of redeeming them.

Here in Scandinavia we pay $130 for a Remote Plus + nunchuck =/

Personally I use the Classic Controller Pro 90% of the time, but the Gamepad is pretty good and surprisingly comfy, and the touch functions are nice shortcuts.

EDIT: beaten like a rented mule, and by fellow CC Pro lovers no less.

Just a reminder, cheapo 'chucks are probably fine and all but you do NOT want to fuck with third-party wiimotes. You'll just end up spending more when you have to order official ones eventually anyways.

Fuckin' trust me, Nintenbros.

Never, ever going third party on controllers or memory cards is one of the unwritten rules of gaming. Any who stray from it will inevitably suffer tears.

Ooooohweeeeee that Pro C controller is comfy as fuck.

I dont know what game to break it in with though. Thinkin I might just wait til Cranky Kongs arrival in February.

W101 again.

Gamepad, wii remote and they patched in also the Wii U Pro Controller lately.

Edit: damn it, D-e-f-

This cannot be stressed enough. 3rd party remotes (and even worse, Chinese knockoff remotes from amazon or ebay) are GARBAGE.

Chucks, I have a couple Chinese knockoffs and I never had an issue. $4 each on ebay.

So I'm looking to buy a couple of Wiimote + for Wii U and, bizarrely, it seems that my cheapest option is to buy multiple copies of Wii Party U?!? Or am I missing something?

That's what I got.

I have heard pretty bad things about 3rd party wiimotes, so I don't even wanna know how bad the Chinese knockoffs are :/

If you have to get a Wii Remote Plus, picking up Wii Party U is one of your best options. I think there is also a NintendoLand and a Mario & Sonic Olympics remote bundle.

Should have mentioned - I'm in the UK but will check to see if they do anything similar over here - thanks!

In that case then Wii Party U is your best bet. Unless you don't have Skyward Sword and don't mind paying a hefty(ish) price for the Zelda Wii Remote on eBay.

People saying the gamepad battery sucks... Can't you just have it connected to the machine while playing for INFINITE POWEEEER?

I picked up wii party u, but needed some more (family gaming Christmas).
The best I found was new ones for 26.95 on the argos outlet shop on eBay. They are blue though. Work fine.

No means yes?

For all intents and purposes anyway. The gamepad charges and plays when plugged in with an AC adapter, so just plug it in near your couch and you're golden. I sometimes do it out of habit just because it unlocks a brighter setting otherwise not available.

You can't plug it into the machine, which is what he asked.

Yes, you can plug it into a wall outlet when it's hooked up to its own AC adapter and power brick, but it's not exactly convenient unless you sit right by a wall.

I interpret the point of his question differently. "For all intents and purposes" you can do the same thing that plugging a rechargeable controller into console would accomplish. You gave him a literal one word answer, despite a more convenient solution being there.

And yes, I said more convenient than plugging directly into the console. The AC adapter cord is long and you could put it right next to the console if you want to. But I doubt my setup is terribly unique in that I have access to an outlet not far from where I game (and I don't have to have some cord bouncing back and forth on my coffee table that way either).

so you sit right next to your consoles but not to a wall? where are you gaming? in a cathedral?
propbably 95% of gamers have an outlet behind their couch they are sitting on while gaming.

The way my family room entertainment center(it's not my gaming entertainment center) is set up, if I had the U set up there and wanted to keep my gamepad plugged, I'd be confined to some pretty bad viewing angles.

Offtv while charging is DA WAY! ;p

So you don't have it where the TV is wall mounted in the center? Is the TV or couch in a corner?

Battery life is bad yes (with the highest brightness), but like everything for the Wii U, is blown out of proportion. I just have and extension cable and most of the time play with the gamepad plugged.

So you don't have it where the TV is wall mounted in the center? Is the TV or couch in a corner?

It's more because of the layout of the room(It's a really big 'room' so to speak), the room is connected to the kitchen(there is no wall separating the two) and the TV is facing the kitchen, so there is no wall behind the couches. I'd draw a pic if I wasn't at work :P

Needless to say, playing with the gamepad connected wouldn't work in my family room, so the point is that having the gamepad always connected isn't an option for everyone :P

What are the top 5 must-have titles on Wii U eShop for someone who has never even had a Wii? Probably going to throw £50 at it on christmas day.

What type of thing do you like? You could probably get like 10 different answers to this question. Personally, if you're talking about pure e-Shop only (i.e. not available at retail and not VC) I'd recommend:

Trine 2
Toki Tori 2+
Little Inferno
EDGE
BIT Trip Presents: Runner 2
Mighty Switch Force: Hyper Drive Edition

Toki Tori 2+
Earthbound
ZombiU (unless you find a better deal for the disc version)

Be aware of:
Special Offer

Toki Tori 2 + €7.49 (£6.49) until 02/01/14, 23:59 UTC - If bought one of either Toki Tori, RUSH or EDGE
Toki Tori 2 + €5.99 (£5.19) until 02/01/14, 23:59 UTC - If bought two of either Toki Tori, RUSH or EDGE
Toki Tori 2 + €4.49 (£3.89) until 02/01/14, 23:59 UTC - If bought all of the following: Toki Tori, RUSH and EDGE
Those three games are currently all available for €1.99 | £1.79 and are very much worth getting. So take advantage of that offer at your discretion. I know these are all available on Steam already but for my liking, the Off-TV Play support and added functionality make these the definitive versions to play.

Your Wii ownership has no bearing on any recommendations other than Virtual Console games. And there we don't know if you have played those on the NES/SNES already or not.

There are demos for a few other recommendable games out there (Nano Assault Neo, Trine 2 <- this you probably already have on steam)

edit: oh and I would also recommend Little Inferno still unless you own a tablet where it only costs a penny or something.

I'm mostly looking for things that work especially well on Wii U or are exclusive to it. I have already played or had an opportunity to buy most of your recommendations on PC. I would include VC, but I guess that library is so big that it's hard to narrow it down. I'm basically looking for experiences I wouldn't get on my PC.
