2025 | Donkey Kong Bananza Direct (18th June) (2pm UK // 6am PT // 9am ET)

The game looks AMAZING (gameplay), but yeah that detail is keeping me from deciding... I'm gonna wait until we're close to or after release for deciding
That was before this Direct. Thought it looked awesome today, I'm sold.

Just a bit of a wonky frame rate but other than that looked like pure Nintendo goodness.

Smashing through the terrian is a new feature but what's the problem?

Don't we want games with new features and try different things?

Yes, but it's not that it's a new feature, it's that this is now the entire core of the gameplay, rather than platforming.

This Direct convinced me, this is a Must-play banger! Nintendo does it again.

Hoping it looks and plays great on the 8in 1080p HDR screen. 🙏

Oh you're just being dense now

Go troll somewhere else

I'm just watching the gameplay they're showing us. There is very little actual platforming there. That's just a fact.

That doesn't mean this won't be a good game, but it's nothing like any previous DK game. I guess I just wanted a modern take on what DK64 tried to do, and this is very far from that.

This looks like tons of fun, can't wait

Incredible, this game looks massive... 100 hour timesink incoming.

Maybe Nintendo were sly and knew what they were doing separating Mario Kart World and Bananza - because this looks like the real higher value game and an actual premium launch title.

Can't wait!
You can tell there's a TON of stuff in the game they didn't go over in the direct. Nintendo was genius to set expectations low, with people thinking it looked like little more than a tech demo, only to show its actually a FULLY Featured/content packed game. Under promise/Over deliver was their strategy here.

You don't have to be into this game at all, of course, but I think that mixing itu p a little biut from a straight platformer is a good thing, especially when they feel they have the technology to do so.

I mean, when I have to say something like "destruction in vidya is so cool, see these games that came out 15 years ago like BFBC2 and RFG" it's just kind of sad.

There also seemed to be a fair bit of platforming, but they showed it off after the destruction.

People are really bad at reading trailers. The 1st trailer was the system seller for me.

I agree with your first paragraph, but the Direct showed very little actual platforming (I've watched it twice now). Almost all of it is DK running, smashing and pounding his way through. What little platforming is shown is mostly in some of the challenge levels, and those also look the most fun gameplay-wise.

Looks like this game is going to be a Salt generator 😂😂 Nintendo based.

Imagine seeing all this and as a gamer not be hyped.

I guess they "graduated" :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Not really my thing. I wasn't overly keen when it was first shown, still not and I really really don't like the lurid colour scheme.

I'll wait for the next Nintendo platformer.

And some people here always fall in that trap… BTW… The Prime 4 direct is going to be INSANE.

Was watching the 4k stream but to me didn't seem that jump out look at me, u deffo can feel this started as a switch 1 game then transferred over to switch 2, some textures look shit but others look great, but for me there's nothing else switch 2 only to play at min so will be a purchase

Now hopefully they do the same for Metroid Prime 4.

New Donk City boxes can be seen in the video, so it's already a place.

Not sure why but I seem to be the only one to assume Pauline got transformed into a kid when she got sealed in the rock and will get her age and memories back when she gets to the core.
Pauline talked to DK about a dream they can make come true when they go back to the surface. That dream could be building New Donk City!

We will see! 😆

I LOVE fun, but I also want QUALITY. This looks more like a bad tech demo of some sort. Zero art direction, just a super weird color scheme. I hope for a miracle in the end though. Will still wait for Metroid instead. Mario Kart and this does not do it for me.
I understand what you mean.

DK Country had a very distinct style and atmosphere that set it apart from other Nintendo-made games.
But now this new game vibe is just Donkey Kong Odyssey of the Wild.

(Tho it still gonna be a great video game)

Uh, this looks awesome. They really are leaning into the heart/storytelling aspect a lot more than expected here so it's nice to actually have a Nintendo game with full voice acting. The whole DK as a goofy big bro to a young girl is a winning combo although it makes me feel like someone on the team was a huge fan of Wreck-It Ralph.

I'm hoping we get answers as to why DK kidnapped Pauline in the "future" though. Forget the Kremlings, I'm all in on this arcade DK lore now.
That's probably because Miyamoto is basically out of their way AND Koizumi replaced him... You know, the guy that studied for film production or something like that and wanted to make great stories for games even hiding Mario Galaxy Rosalina storytelling section from Miyamoto lol.

I also assume that something isn't quite right with her.

either she was transformed by that rock, or the rock became a clone of her somehow by getting into contact with her.

edit: actually, yeah, her being shrunken down makes sense given her clothes.
she is wearing pants that are way too big for her, and her top seems like it was her dress which was torn off at the bottom so that she isn't tripping over it while walking.
and she's barefoot because her shoes were too big to wear after being shrunken down

Nintendo has baited peoples with initial trailers and then dropping a whooping megabomb of a trailer afterwards since 3D Mario, BOTW, Odyssey, TOTK and I'm probably forgetting a couple.

The strategy works

Prime 4 direct is going to blow some minds.

Eehhh I have my doubts. I mean what have we seen, you shoot things? Will wear off fast. /s

Imagine being Tokyo EPD one year ago while everyone was slinging them shit when Astro Bot dropped and they were just smirking and sculpting this.
Who's everyone? The same kind of frauds who shilled Astrobot last year will still pretend it's better than Bananza.

What I like most about Nintendo's games is I can play them and get a flash back to what it was like playing games in my pre-teen/teen years. Grabbing the wooden sword (after dying 5 times) in LoZ, the curtain opening of SMB3, the thunder storm in LTTP, Ridley snatching up the baby Metroid; these are solid points in time for me...getting to be able to glimpse/have the feeling again, however fleeting, is invaluable to me.

Some people say Nintendo games are for kids...for me Nintendo games let me BE a kid again.

MSRP: incalculable
Lol And this is why Nintendo games, especially Mario games sometimes have inflated scores. It's that nostalgia and that memory of being a Nintendo kid.

really dude really a bad tech demo wow just wow.

Constantly just smash through things and throwing rocks doesn't sound like fun for a 30+ hour 3D platformer. I'd prefer more platforming and less destruction mechanics, is my problem. Hmmm. I might be a pass on this one, honestly. Might wait for the true follow-up to Odyssey.

I'm going to be let down if the Pauline thing ended up just being some sort of magical de-aging or time-travel/parallel universe stuff. A big reason why the premise of them being buds is so compelling is because we know how these characters interact in the "future" with DK arcade. Would be kinda lame if they just hand-wave it away with some sort of deus ex doodad.

That was great. The core gameplay hook was always interesting, but the expanded moveset and all the different levels have me 100% sold.

This has got to be an "origin story" for the New Donk City situation in Odyssey, right?

That presentation was stellar, flipped my opinion on the game completely.
I still have my reservations about how one not punching everything can be, but it seems to be quite a bit more to it so I'm much more optimistic now. I'll be getting it for sure now.

It clearly targets 60fps I wonder about the resolution and DLSS.

Maybe in Odysseys lore, Pauline and DK are always friends but the city folk perceive DK coming to see her as a threat and it turns into a whole misconceived ordeal? That's the easiest basic explanation.

in Donkey Kong (arcade) the antagonist is Cranky Kong.
this Donkey Kong only comes into the series with Donkey Kong Jr.,
and the character we're playing here is Donkey Kong Jr.

so this character never really interacted with Pauline in any game. he interacted with Mario when he tried to free Cranky Kong after Mario captured him.

Pauline's clothes in this game point towards the fact that she was turned into a kid. her top looks like it's her typical dress, but cut off at the bottom to make it fit after being shrunken.
her pants are way too big and probably not hers.
and she's barefoot because her adult shoes wouldn't fit anymore.

so I am kinda convinced now that she's been shrunken down somehow
