2025 | Donkey Kong Bananza Direct (18th June) (2pm UK // 6am PT // 9am ET)

Lol This game won't get half the GOTY awards that Astro got.

as if that matters lol.
Astrobot getting all those accolades while being the most derivative and basic platformer imaginable is a clear indicator that these kinds of awards don't really mean anything.

it wasn't even the best 3D platformer of the year lol

Don't care for the singing but the rest is %100 my jam.

This is what I bought a Switch 2 for and it really looks like I won't be disappointed.

You should watch their acceptance speech for that award...

Oh...never mind. I understand now.

Why can't people enjoy the game instead of doing this fucking fanboy BS and insult both games that I like.

Don't like this game then don't fucking buy it…..end of story…..you can go in the corner and cry rivers about it.

in Donkey Kong (arcade) the antagonist is Cranky Kong.
this Donkey Kong only comes into the series with Donkey Kong Jr.,
and the character we're playing here is Donkey Kong Jr.

so this character never really interacted with Pauline in any game. he interacted with Mario when he tried to free Cranky Kong after Mario captured him.

Pauline's clothes in this game point towards the fact that she was turned into a kid. her top looks like it's her typical dress, but cut off at the bottom to make it fit after being shrunken.
her pants are way too big and probably not hers.
and she's barefoot because her adult shoes wouldn't fit anymore.

so I am kinda convinced now that she's been shrunken down somehow
The DK Jr thing would make sense except that Cranky Kong here still looks like Cranky (so shouldn't he look even older when Pauline is an adult?).

I think kid Pauline's ripped dress is just a reference to the classic Pauline torn-clothes-King-Kong look:

Anyway, usual malding clowns aside they've shown something interesting in the japanese direct:

There seems to be two more animal transformations.

(oh there's 2 threads, should really be merged... )

Their pairing gives me Ralph + Vanellope vibes but it definitely adds a needed extra layer of weirdness that it felt lacking before. What's the deal with this not showing up at their previous demos... late-development retooling of the story to add her, or did they just remove her from all the previous things as a planned reveal?

I also assume that something isn't quite right with her.

either she was transformed by that rock, or the rock became a clone of her somehow by getting into contact with her.

edit: actually, yeah, her being shrunken down makes sense given her clothes.
she is wearing pants that are way too big for her, and her top seems like it was her dress which was torn off at the bottom so that she isn't tripping over it while walking.
and she's barefoot because her shoes were too big to wear after being shrunken down

I'm not seeing this... I think it's a reboot. And indeed breaks the prior lore of Cranky Kong, if so.

Yo there's a world where both Donkey Kong and Astro Bot win GOTYs. They're literally a year apart lol.

Get the fuck out of here with that zero-sum thinking.

once again showing how meaningless all this is.

imagine thinking a platformer that is as dumbed down as this deserves all this praise

it deserves a baby's first platfomer award tho
Keep crying bruh. 😂 Also the irony of you calling Astro "dumbed down" and a "a baby platformer" When Mario Odyssey was dumbed down with its multiple lives and infinite lives. 🤣 Idk why ya'll Nintendo fanboys are so salty about Astro. Ya'll should be happy. That someone tackled the genre that ya'll love and made it a success. But I guess that's tribalism. I'm going to stop now. Because I don't want ya'll Nintendo fanboys to keep crying and I don't want to get banned.

it is also worth noting that the girl from DK1 isn't necessarily Pauline either.
it's not clear if Nintendo reconned that with Odyssey, but before Odyssey the girl in DK1 is called Lady, and Pauline only comes into the series with Donke Kong on GameBoy.

but I am not sure which Donkey Kong is in that game... if it's DK or DK Jr.

I'm super surprised by animal transformation, they look super fun.

The best part is you can swap between them insanely.

This was always the plan, it kind of slipped under the radar but the key art with Pauline on it was briefly posted on Nintendo of Korea right after the initial reveal in April before being taken down. Made the rounds on the Nintendo hardcore sites but most people missed it or forgot about it.

But Cranky's dialogue already references the original arcade Donkey Kong and past Donkey Kong games like DK64. I think there is some time and memory altering shenanigans going on with Pauline. This could all take place before Odyssey but certainly well after Donkey Kong and DKC1,2,3 and 64.

Keep talking about Astrobot in an Donkey Kong thread to see how is going to end for you 🤣🤣

Steamworld dig was basically crack. Digging, smashing, building. How is this not the best fucking thing to happen to a 3D world platformer.
It's GAF, they complain about bizarre shit, they just can't help themselves.

Dumbed down as in has no depth.
Astrobot has zero skill expression due to its incredibly simple moveset that doesn't allow for any creativity in tackling obstacles or enemies.

watch a Mario Odyssey speedrun, and then watch an Astrobot speedrun.
in both cases you'll see the highest level of play possible... in Mario you'll see tons of movement options being used in precise and creative ways.
in Astrbot you'll see the most basic of moves, with the only difference from a normal playthough being the use of wonky collision boxes to skip some corners here and there.

Constantly just smash through things and throwing rocks doesn't sound like fun for a 30+ hour 3D platformer. I'd prefer more platforming and less destruction mechanics, is my problem. Hmmm. I might be a pass on this one, honestly. Might wait for the true follow-up to Odyssey.
30+? its probably 10-12 hour long, not for 100% ofc

Astrobot 3M

Mario Odyssey 30M

Thanks I guess 🤡

You're an alt account, go all for it

TLOU 2 is the most GOTY awarded game and it says it all. GOTY awards have long stopped being meaningful 🤷‍♂️
Nobody has quite the pocket that Sony does to buy their way to awards. So many obscure sites voted for this shit that its almost like a shell company operation they have going on.

The speedruns are going to be crazy. I think that might be the richest moveset a 3D platformer character has ever had, and there's probably a bunch of hidden mechanics we still have no idea about.

I liked Astro Bot and rated it pretty high. It's a spectacle platformer. The primary draw is the visuals and spectacle, like audio and rumble. It has some really good bosses. But it is incredibly simple. He has literally 1 jump and 1 attack. Some of the powerups are really cool like the time freeze in particular, but this is what people talk about in terms of dumbed down. The move list is incredibly simplistic. Reminds me of Knack honestly. Same dev team too. Just a straight forward 1 jump, 1 attack. Kind of old school.

Astrobot?

I mean I understand Clair obscur will likely win because it's a feel good story, indie dev against all odds, little teary moment at game awards etc, and likely to remain my GOTY too,

But who gives a shit? This can also be platformer of the gen without GOTY committee Doritos pope approval
dk will win for fam game

I have nothing against Astro, but "made it a success" is a bit of a stretch, no?

Idk why Nintendo fanboys here are angry. I like Nintendo games. I have a Switch 2 and I'm going to get DK. I just don't subscribe to the Nintendo cult.

Not saying it's him for sure.. but he did use Nintendo Cult a lot. 🤷‍♂️

Just watched the Direct and this looks WAY better than I expected!! Holy crap it looks so fun!

First we get Astro Bot last year, now we get DK Bananza. Us 3D platformer fans are eating damn good lately!

Looks unreal, way better than what was previously shown.

Most definitely the Mario Odyssey of the Switch 2's launch which is nothing but a good thing.

wow.....you know......this is the type of game where I really wish Nintendo had achievements/trophies. Any word on if more games will have app medals like Zelda?

I'm a Nintendo zealot and also liked Astro Bot -- easily my favorite PS5 game of the gen.

But this whole 'most GOTY awards ever' thing is a farce and everyone knows it. It's just because there's more and more random sites being counted than ever before. Like if there was 400 sites doing GOTY awards in 1996 I'm pretty sure we all know what the 'most awarded 3D platformer ever' would be.
