A Tour of Sonic Lost World - IGN

I like that Sonic looks like he moves around really zippy and tight. I don't like how jumps have no momentum. You can just drag him around in the air mid-jump. Parkour system looks fun.

The 2D section was awful. Awkward platforming. It looked just like colors and that's not a good thing.

The third section, "Mach Speed", looked stupid. Why force it? Why not leave it up to the player with the new movement system you implemented? What's the damn point of giving better control if you're going to take it away for an entire level?

Are we going to see more levels like the first one? Those are the only ones I care about.

I'm not feeling any hate for the other two levels, but I agree with the basic sentiment that the vast majority of the game should be more like level 1. That seems like the ideal gameplay, and all the new game mechanics from the run toggle to the parkour seem geared for it. Hopefully someone will ask a developer at E3 and we can get a better sense for the structure of the game.

I don't mind if there are other levels with different styles here and there, as long as they're fun and not a major focus. Mario Galaxy, for example, had quite a few themed levels that almost felt like bonus stages... They broke up the gameplay, provided a change of pace, but they weren't that frequent.

The other two stages looked pretty fun to me, but I agree they weren't as cool as the first stage.

THIS LOOKS GOOD. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO THINK BECAUSE THIS ACTUALLY LOOKS GOOD. ...IS THE SONIC CYCLE ACTUALLY SERIOUSLY 100% BROKEN NOW?!?!?!?! HOORAYYYYY

I hope they handle the constant running levels well. When he said he had no contol over Sonic I had a horrible flashback of 2006. Also, please let this game be longer than Colors and Generations!

*nods head*

Seems like a good exclusive snag. Looks pretty fun, and it sounded like they understood where to take this game. Doesn't look gimmicky at all.

I don't think 2D levels are a problem, it's the way that level is constructed and the clunkiness of the Colors platforming physics. The playable part of the level is very boringly designed; very little interesting platforming, most of it is constructed out of licorice rails. I don't like Sonic has no momentum. If you hold down the run button he goes max speed and stops on a dime.

This looks damn solid. Not as fast as Generations, which is good, because I want to be able to actually control Sonic.

Actually that candy level looked like shit, such boring level design.

Getting my realistic views back...since the 3DS version is made by Dimps, I'm a little hesitant about it thinking of their track record. Gonna have to see some really good impressions for that version.

I have confidence in the Colors team for the Wii U version being solid.

I think it looks like a much better realisation of 3D Sonic than any of the other past games. You have that (slightly slower) sense of speed, but precision platforming and alternate routes as well.

Actually quite surprised how good it looks! (from a gameplay perspective). Also seems quite far along. Hopefully an eShop demo sometime soon.

Wow. So.. which version do I get? If only Nintendo had crossbuy.

WiiU if anything. Take a little while to get impressions from the 3DS version since it is by Dimps. Something could take the fun out of it mid game.

EDIT: That E3 demo should be on the Eshop for the Nintendo Direct...doesnt seem too big or anything that might be broken with it. And honestly, the "thank you for playing screen" makes it look like a home demo.

And how do you know they're part of the development process? All that's been announced is that Nintendo's publishing the next three Sonic games themselves, not SEGA. This could be Yasuhara's work for all we know.

Rumors and the very same article on IGN seems to point that this game didnt start on WiiU, so its unlikely that Yasuhara or Nintendo worked on this unless the game changed a lot.

It kinda reminds more of Super Monkey Ball more than Mario Galaxy.

I don't get what people mean with the physics being weird in the 3DS version?
I mean doesn't it make sense that the two games share the same engine?

Edit: And DIMPS or not, didn't they make Sonic Rush? That's good enough for me, loved that game.

Edit #2: Hey, quick edit is fixed! Thank you resident GAF coder.

Either that or you missed out on Colors and Generations. :P
Yeah, while Sonic was already on a path of getting better games, this really looks like a departure from what we've seen before with design decisions made in service of good platforming.

As somebody who usually hates modern Sonic games, this looks kind of
fun
.

I'm most pleased at the comments in the video in regards to giving the player more control.

It's funny that pretty much the first full-blown handheld 3d Sonic can't beat Sonic Adventure in graphics... The gameplay seems to be better than SA though (which isn't to difficult to achieve).

This looks great, can't wait to play it.

I wonder how much input Nintendo have had, it definitely has shades of Super Mario Galaxy in there. I like the visual style too.

When is the last time you've played Sonic Adventure?

Compare the gameplay sections of the trailer with the demo gameplay and you'll notice the demo gameplay looks blurry for some reason.

As for 3DS vs Wii U. The 3DS' 3D gameplay looks a bit weird. The jumps/physics look a bit odd and the level design didn't look good compared to the Wii U version.

Maybe they were capturing from the Wii U pad instead of the televisioN?

This is the first time in .. I don't know how many years, that I'm excited for a Sonic game. The last two Sonic games I've played were Sonic and the Secret Rings (which I really didn't like) and Sonic Generations (which I also didn't like much) but the multiple-paths idea seems to make more sense in Lost World and there seems to be some decent platforming involved too.
