adults, why do you 'console war'?

Listening to old 1up podcasts, and it seems like the argument for console wars is because kids can only afford one console and gotta feel defensive about their purchase?

I know gaf audience is mostly of the older crowd who has jobs who probably can afford all the consoles and maybe even a pc too (layoff italian meals), so what motivates you to war? exclusives? suckered into marketing? bored at work and need to vent on something?

I mean sony and ms are about the same 'evil', one just has a better marketing strategy today. this can easily change.

It's less of a console war and more people arguing about their opinions at this level. Owning all doesn't mean you're free of preference, and people argue about their preferences all the time, in everything.

Look into my eyes.

They saw shit you can never comprehend.

I think it's a case of this regardless of income. Maybe not necessarily "defending" but more so why you think your reasons for purchase X are valid.

I feel it would be selfish not to try and persuade the gaming world to get into the awesomeness of playing game on a PC. People need to know. I guess I'm just a nice guy.

Anonymity is a huge factor. I think people are more courteous in person, and they don't give a shit about which console you like/own. The internet gives us the ability to be complete dicks with zero repercussions. This is all anecdotal. Take it with a grain of salt.

Same reason why people create ingroups and outgroups in anything. Human nature.

Owned both but have my preferences. I usually only respond to BS, other than that I don't feel the need to get involved tbh.

I don't have a preference, but I find pointing out hypocrisy and misinformation to be amusing in console war threads.

I don't have a very exciting life.

Just because you can afford both consoles doesn't mean its a financially responsible decision to buy both. The majority of games are multiplatform, meaning owning one system gets you the *vast* majority of good games available once you include the first party titles as well. Spending half a thousand dollars(plus the cost of games) on the other console only gets you the exclusive games for that system and that's it. The initial console purchase is far, far, far greater value than the 2nd.

Some people are enthusiast enough to want both still and can stomach that diminished value and good for them, but one thing you should also learn as an adult is that just because you can afford something doesn't mean you should buy it.

So I do think there's still a large element of justification going on, even with adults.

Reacting to reactions describes a lot of what socializing really is. I think a hobby that entails technology, competition, storytelling *and* art just has a lot of room for that sort of thing.

If a platform is powerful? Represents the cutting edge. You're seeing the state of the art play out with every compelling release. Platform is weak? You're seeing the underdog fight the good fight, and art overcoming technical limitations. I feel like there's a compelling narrative for most opinions. I don't think having multiple platforms necessarily makes you unbiased.

I generally don't console war so much as explain why I get Nintendo's systems. I make plenty of snide remarks about the dudebro content that is found in particular excess on other systems, but the PS3/4 are good systems, and I can see why the 360 did so well.
Now the One, that's a different story, but alas I don't worry myself on it too much.

I never cared until this generation. I'll buy an xbone eventually during a big price drop or good sale but MS does not deserve my money after entertaining that horrible DRM ploy for so long.

It's fun having the ability to drop a word here and an inflection there to get someone all riled up. All while having a pretty legit conversation about the merits of one company or another.

I don't, really. I like Nintendo a lot and Sony too. Not a fan of Microsoft ( mainly because they took Rare from Nintendo and I haven't forgiven them since and because I have no need for another console since I have PS4 :P ) but outside of that... yeah.

I do find myself defending Nintendo a fair bit though because for whatever reason there's a been a lot of negativity from GAF and both on my Twitter regarding that. Gets REALLY freaking annoying.

"My console's better than all consoles!"
"No, my console's better!"
"Mine has green lights!"
"Mine has blue so it's better!"
"But the experience is better on mine!"
"The graphix look betr n mine"
"Boner boner boner boner boner"

It's like sports to many gamers.
You pick a team and argue until the end of time.

Interest in tech discussions which tend to degenerate into console war.

Also, the drama and lulz are stupidly entertaining. Take it like a sport.

Because I'm passionate about the industry and in the end it's all fun and games. Seeing stuff like Bayonetta 2 being Wii U exclusive is just hilarious and the meltdowns even more so.

On the whole though, the "My console is better than yours!" mentality is dumb.

I feel like adults are less likely to, "console war" due to them having money to afford any game they want...i'd expect it more to be kids, mid to late teens, who seem to do that sort of thing.

Gotta do something in between releases!

Some people take things way too far. I've been done with console war garbage for a long time now. I'd rather just focus on the games I like.

I find it so dumb. And it's baffling to me that a box will rile people up so much , I don't buy the sports team analogy.

I agree with this. I had both 360 and ps3 and wouldn't hesitate to say I liked ps3 more. At the same time i would tell you that I thought 360 was the best console earlier in the lives of the 2.

Petty tribalism. The Infamous 3 has gone gold thread is pretty odd, as it's a mixture of fanaticisms blended with obvious shills and a sprinkling of just plain weird.
