What's interesting is that a lot of that isn't true. A UI aimed at pushing adds? Where are these ads, in the store? Ahahahah.I was past console warring, I was a participant in many previous wars over the years but I'd settled, I feel old and tired, I was happy with both my 360 and PS3.
Then Microsoft tried to destroy everything at E3, with an anti-consumer product with a terrible and uniformly hated UI aimed at pushing adverts, designed by people in corporate marketing and pandering to the worst desires of more nefarious publishers.
It was enough to get me to want to fight the battle again, their vision cannot come to pass, and they need to be punished sufficiently enough that nobody else tries it again, at least for a while. I expect a lot of other old warriors came out of retirement due to the stakes.
Really dude? "Fight the battle"? "They need to be punished sufficiently"?
Wtf kind of talk is that? I didn't realise we were talking about the War of Independence.
I can't help but imagine most of the enjoyment one can bring out of sports would be gone if they were neither actively participating or had a favorite team to root for. I suppose similar actually can apply for games, but there's a hell of a lot more weight on actual participation so rooting for them while not actually playing games seems sort of insane.This.
Why don't we all support every football team or hockey team?
Yeah, for the most part any company I wanted knocked down was a company doing things I didn't really like. Sony being pains in the ass about game approval meant I wanted them knocked down or at least made less desirable for Japanese games to be made on so there were better odds of some of them actually getting localized, and likewise Microsoft's planned DRM made me want to see them completely and utterly fail, and even with that dropped I still want to see them knocked down several pegs as a reminder to not pull that shit again. Otherwise I'd just like to see the stuff I like do well enough, IE the handhelds or even the Wii U. Don't need to be king of the hill (pretty much impossible in raw numbers relative to mobile anyway) just well enough for developers and publishers to actually support rather than ostracize. When a company makes decisions that are bad for the hobby, they engender hatred.
even as a kid, i never gave a shit
At the end of the day, putting which console you like to the side, if you're wishing that either company goes out of business, you're an asshole. You should hope that they're all successful!
Me either, but console wars didn't exist when I was a kid. That I'm aware of, anyway.
personally I enjoy fucking about, even during the spectrum/commodore war.
What's interesting is that a lot of that isn't true. A UI aimed at pushing adds?
I'm a huge sports fan. I think that there is deep tribalism embedded in iur programming- see politics, sports, religion, whatever. But I understand allegiances to sports teams. I don't get fighting over a box.
You're not American. I read this over and over and could not understand what fucking has to do with the console wars.
Seeing that some responses here are rather "strong", can somebody define "console war" and distinguish it from normal discussions about facts and opinions on platforms, games and companies?
Because saying something like "The Wii U is a bad product and I don't really understand why anyone would want to buy it" or "this game performs better on PC than on PS4" is not console war, but many people here take it for that.
It's not just 'console' wars. Take phones, cars, anything - people argue about a lot of things
Listening to old 1up podcasts, and it seems like the argument for console wars is because kids can only afford one console and gotta feel defensive about their purchase?
I know gaf audience is mostly of the older crowd who has jobs who probably can afford all the consoles and maybe even a pc too (layoff italian meals), so what motivates you to war? exclusives? suckered into marketing? bored at work and need to vent on something?
Me either, but console wars didn't exist when I was a kid. That I'm aware of, anyway.
I randomly ran into a forum once where people were arguing over toasters. It was awesome.
personally I enjoy fucking about, even during the spectrum/commodore war.
That was serious business.

Console/arcade/game wars have been around since the 70s/80s.
Unless you were a kid well before then![]()
That's what it turns into for a certain creepy group of every fanbase, yeah.
That crazy thread where some guy was trying to claim the PS4 was more "versatile" than the PC was really sad. The OP was fairly reasonable, but this other dude just went nuts trying to claim that remote play is such a massive boon to the platform that all else pales in comparison, including any other forms of remote play that aren't Sony branded. At that point you have Sony fans kind of nudging their seats away from the dude.
I'm not sure if being able to afford every console makes you suddenly immune to console war though.
I know gaf audience is mostly of the older crowd who has jobs who probably can afford all the consoles and maybe even a pc too (layoff italian meals), so what motivates you to war?
The "Sports Too" thing is so odd to me.
excellent, did they use gifs?
Why do you think MS went with a tiled UI? We saw the ads arrive on the 360 of course, so really it's a continuation.
Petty tribalism. The Infamous 3 has gone gold thread is pretty odd, as it's a mixture of fanaticisms blended with obvious shills and a sprinkling of just plain weird.
It's not "War of Independence". But any company pulling that kind of bullshit shouldn't be rewarded in any way, and it should not be forgotten just because they went back on it. If they suffer backlash from the market then so be it and it's all the better if others take notice and adapt.Really dude? "Fight the battle"? "They need to be punished sufficiently"?
Wtf kind of talk is that? I didn't realise we were talking about the War of Independence.
What? People are having fun in a thread and making avatars. Mind pointing out the obvious shills?Petty tribalism. The Infamous 3 has gone gold thread is pretty odd, as it's a mixture of fanaticisms blended with obvious shills and a sprinkling of just plain weird.
This.Yeah, the sports comparisons are meaningless. They are competitions designed around spectator involvement. If you or others have created a similar aura around electronics corporations then that's entirely artificial, and pretty fucking sad.
