After 7 years, Rising Storm 2: Vietnam just got an update

Reality marches on. Games rise and fall. Today’s darlings are tomorrow’s footnotes. The number of truly timeless PC games is extremely small. Doom will never die. Civilization is here to stay. Counter-Strike, Battlefield, and Escape From Tarkov aren’t going anywhere. But even great games may unceremoniously fall into the ravine of history – that is, unless they’re Rising Storm 2 Vietnam, which somehow, seven years after it was first released, has just gotten a new update. Published by Tripwire, the label behind Chivalry 2 and the Killing Floor series, Rising Storm 2 is a brutal, bloody shooter that makes Hell Let Loose look like Splatoon. If you never played it before, or you’ve not picked it up for years, now is the time to go back.

64 players, 20 maps, more than 50 weapons, and multiple vehicles including tanks and helicopters – Rising Storm 2 Vietnam is a big FPS game, similar in spirit to Battlefield. But there’s a twist. Each different army in Rising Storm 2 (there are six) has different abilities and weapons. Albeit at an enormous scale, this is an asymmetrical multiplayer game where fastidious balance is less important than chaos and spectacle. Compared to a lot of contemporary shooters, where every single component seemingly has to be smoothed down, made completely ‘fair,’ and tweaked and patched and re-tweaked to death (cough, Helldivers 2), Rising Storm knows the fun is in the friction.

And now, seven years after its 2017 release, it has a new update. The last time developer Antimatter Games posted on the Rising Storm 2 Steam page was October 2023, and even then, it was only to announce a double XP event – before that, the most recent post was from 2021.

Somehow, though, Rising Storm 2 Vietnam is suddenly getting some love. A fresh update boosts server security and stability. It also fixes issues with the in-game voice chat – if you’re a Rising Storm 2 regular and you were having problems with muting other players, or hearing people in your team, those should now be resolved.

The entire VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) system has been overhauled, in fact, with six separate fixes designed to make it work more smoothly than ever. Given the pace of videogame culture and how quickly great games can sometimes get left behind, it’s great to see Rising Storm 2 still being looked after, even seven years on. If you want to try it for yourself, just head here.

Otherwise, try some of the other best multiplayer games, or maybe the best war games ever made.

Here's the info from the article since OP failed to include it:

Love this game and go back to it regularly. I absolutely love the weapon handling and kill feedback. Definitely the best middle ground between something like Battlefield and Hell Let Loose.

I'm glad they've kept the game going and I really hope they can manage to release '83 in a good state.

Edit: Just seen that Antimatter sold the rights to '83 to a different studio after they closed last year.

Used to play on the regular, primarily as a commander. I found egging up my British accent seemed to give people the air that I knew what I was doing.

At least they seemed to listen when I called out the coordinates I was barraging vs charging in head first into and dying on mass when I just called it out like a normal person.

Might give it a go, it's much more stream lined than hell let loose, so the action is much faster to get too. I always did enjoy the Pacific Japs vs Yanks of the original Rising Storm though over Vietnam, I kinda wish they had just stuck to that theatre and added tanks and stuff for the sequel.
