After announcing the co-production of the Ghost of Tsushima Legends anime adaptation with SMEJ's Aniplex, and producing a very animu-looking Marvel fighting game developed by ArcSys, yeah, they're actually supporting their words with actions here.

Given the stark contrast between their Western Studio's penchant for atrocious character designs and actual Anime character design, I look forward to watching the convulsions of the tortured messes they cough out.

If only they had a Japanese studio internally. But who could have foreseen such a need?
Thank god they have two of them instead.

A publisher doesn't need its internal workforce for everything they want to approach, but you knew that already.

It's probably a safer and cheaper strategy than trying to chase western trends. Let's them access the mobile market at the same time too.

Maybe they should speak to their friends over at Sony Music/Aniplex since they released one of the highest grossing gatcha mobile game ever in Fate/Grand Order. It baffles me that SIE wants to get into the mobile space but won't leverage the expertise that another Sony division already has.

Yes.

Remember that as part of their deal Sony will also make anime adaptations of Kadokawa made IPs. Meaning, they may also working in Demon's Souls, Bloodborne, Elden Ring or Sekiro anime adaptations.

SIE has Team Asobi, Polyphony and XDEV Japan, who handles games developed by people like Kojipro, Team Ninja, Arc System Works or Kadokawa (plus teams from other Asian countries like Shift Up). Under other branch they also have Aniplex and subsidiaries like Lasengle.

Plus SIE also signed mobile gaming focused deals with people Kadokawa+CyGames, Koei Tecmo+Akatsuki and people from other Asian countries like Netease, NC Soft or Tencent.

But in any case, what Hermen mentioned is that they are making anime adaptations of their (and maybe some 3rd party PS game) IPs, I assume via PlayStation Productions. Not games with anime aesthetics like Marvel Tokon.

They're talking about turning their franchises into anime, not about making anime games like WuWa or Genshin.
"We continue to drive engagement with the PlayStation ecosystem and brand by bringing our franchises to new formats, film, television, and anime," he said. "Anime in particular is appealing to key younger audiences, so that's going to be very helpful for us."

The corporation that nearly monopolizes anime didn't inform their console gaming branch that anime is wildly popular amongst prime gaming buying audiences?

who the fuck is lining up for Sony woke trash gone anime? cant wait for lesbian of war and ghost of watever
Anime "lesbian of war" is a million times better than Woke "lesbian of war"... I mean... let's be real.

i mean i guess well see, dont most adaptations of even popular ip that make sense (nier) are like mild success? i would much rather they realize why anime is popular (mature themes, unique stories, hot chars, cool action) and take that into their games. but this initiative will prolly be a wash or worse and instead of blaming california it will be the kids who are wrong.

I still think including a subscription to Crunchyroll in the PS+ Premium tier would be a great perk. I would probably go from essential back to Premium if that were the case.

Nintendo feels more anime to me than Sony though, what with stuff like the Xenoblade games.
I also don't really see stuff like Astro Bot bringing in a younger audience. Probably just PR speak though, so whatever.

Same here mate. Looks like Sony doesn't know what its userbase wants nowadays while trying to diversify its contents as much as they can. Other companies did the same before..
You don't know shit about SIE if you think that making anime games or making anime based on games is anything new for them.
Yeah, that's why they are doing such great things with their most profitable IP , FGO....

My bad, they aren't doing shit.

Fuck this clown.
Why would Hermen Hulst do anything with a game controlled by SMEJ? Why do you still assume Sony controls the Fate IP itself?
You're the only clown here, mate.

What an asinine comment. And anime/manga has been on the rise for awhile. There's so many anime being produced yearly because of how profitable the business is becoming and how it's expanding, so it makes sense to tap into that market and design games around anime looking women/men.

i think Sony owns solo leveling which is one of the most popular anime of this year, which also happens to be Korean too
Sony doesn't own Solo Leveling, their subsidiary produced the anime though and Sony through its subsidiaries probably does a lot of the distribution etc.

FGO is not a Sony IP either.

So you are telling me that in seven years Sony couldn't develop a JRPG from an IP exploited by Sony Music? They can't talk to each other and say, "hey, lets do a truly high quality anime game, like Mihoyo's?"

The fanbase is there. This is the same bullshit as not doing anything with Bloodborne. They know it would sell a lot but they just dont care. This is all posturing.

And please, not this "stellar blade" again. Hermen did NOTHING with it. Not a single pic with the prophet Kim. He must be butthurt they didnt include an Aloy skin.

I don't know how much it still makes, but SMEJ was already making absolute bank from FGO for years.
Why would they spend a bunch of money and years of dev to make another Fate gacha game like Mihoyo's to compete with it?
And because they don't own the IP, they would have to get the ok from TM, which becomes more complicated. TM already has other companies make games for them, like Fate Remnant a couple years ago or Fate/Extra Record being developed by their own studio. They also license their IP out to other gacha games. So it's not like a Sony dev'd Fate game would be the only Fate JRPG on the block, and they would have to be giving money to TM (which may be a bigger cut than whatever the deal was with FGO because of how popular it is now). It's not really that simple.

It's like you have absolutely no idea how any of that shit works. Why do you even assume Aniplex or even Type-Moon would be on board with that? Why exactly would Aniplex NOT do that itself when it DOES have the production infrastructure to support such product? Why do you even think any game director at SIEJ would want to make it?
You're looking hard for things to seethe about, and the comparison with Bloodborne is extremely stupid, btw.

Wow, you're so smart, the general manager of the game production division not taking any pictures with the head of that external-development company surely means that he had no involvement in the creation of a product from the fucking game production division. The funniest part is that I didn't even mention Hulst in my Stellar Blade comment.

It seriously looks like the fact that Hermen Hulst greenlit the SIE-produced Stellar Blade is making you VERY uncomfortable. But sorry, you can't change reality. :)

What is the age target for 'younger audience'? My kids haven't touched a nintendo console in years and my son is only 11. Minecraft, Roblox and Fortnite is where it's at for his generation.

Avatar TLA (Aang is the main character) was made by an American studio (Nickelodeon) it looks kinda "anime" in style but it really ain't

Anime in general has amazing character designs you'll never see replicated by some woke western studio, cause the amount of triggering would make them self-combust in anger 🤣

I said anime was bottom of the barrel at this Summer Game Fest. The most repetitive and derivative designs shown in gaming this year.

Sony: yes

Dont accuse me of being a Sony hater. I said this shit before they did. I dont know what else to say. Hopefully they make something good.
