Ant-Man |Spoiler Thread| I Think Our First Move Should Be Calling The Avengers

I had a thought: since the quantum realm is a tie-in to Dr. Strange, and you can see Janet during the subatomic shrinking sequence, what if Rachel McAdams' role in that movie is actually Janet rescued by Strange?

Probably not, but I imagine Strange will be the link to bringing Janet back.
Yup, sounds like it is an intentional reference to Phase 3 (and Dr. strange) according to Feige: http://screenrant.com/ant-man-spoilers-quantum-realm/

On another note it's also something that wasn't in Wright's original draft.

My takeaway from that it was literally just a scene from Civil War lifted out of context and dropped into here, rather than its own one-off scene shot specifically for Ant-Man. I don't think Civil War will begin with the search for Bucky all wrapped up.
They've done that before with Iron Man 2 and Thor, so it's probably what happened.

EDIT: Reed confirmed it: http://www.digitalspy.com/movies/in...-douglas-and-peyton-reed.html#~piFaKmsK8Z9sHK

Pros
  • The humor. I laughed out loud more than I did for even Guardians. I guess that's what happens when you keep Edgar Wright's trademark humor.
  • Tying into the humor, Luis was a much better character than I expected him to be. The ads made him come off as annoying, but his character works exceptionally well in the actual movie.
  • I really got a kick out of the flashbacks, but I wish we got to see more of Janet (loved her old outfit, as well as the new one despite it being unfinished). The CGI on Michael Douglas as a middle-aged man was amazing, I couldn't even tell it was CGI. Plus it was nice to see Peggy & Older Howard again.
  • They actually got me to care about the ants, I actually shouted "NO!" when Anthony got shot.
  • The Falcon bit was actually well-done, & it served as a great trial by fire for Scott.
  • I honestly got a major kick out of the Spider-Man reference.
  • The dramatic moments were pretty well-done overall, though it didn't hit as hard as the humor (nor did I expect it to, but the dramatic scenes got the job done).

Cons
  • Yellowjacket seemed a bit two-dimensional. Then again, Marvel isn't generally the best when it comes to villains (with a few exceptions). Though I'm usually a bit more forgiving about first movie villains since the first movie is normally more about establishing the hero.
  • There were a few pacing issues early on in the movie, but they leveled out in the second half of the film. This will likely be more apparent in my second viewing.
  • I wish Hope was given more to do (since she did great in what she did do), though the mid-credits scene is pretty much gonna grant my wish in future films.
  • Not necessarily a con, but while I did like the dramatic moments overall, I felt like they were better balanced in Guardians.

Overall, I'd give Ant-Man an 8/10 for now. Maybe after a second viewing & giving the film a month to set in my mind that could change, but for now I enjoyed it. As for my MCU Ranking....

Cream of the Crop: Guardians, Winter Soldier (both are tied), Iron Man 1, Avengers 1, Ant-Man
Pretty Damn Good: Age of Ultron, Captain America 1, Iron Man 3, Thor 1
Could Be Better: The Incredible Hulk, Thor 2, Iron Man 2.

For what it's worth, my theater was packed, so the positive word-of-mouth actually got out there in time.

Just got back. Loved it. Went in with relatively low expectations and was pleasantly surprised.

I smiled big time at the Spidey reference, though I was hoping we'd get something Spidey related during the post credits stuff. I guess there wasn't enough time to shoot anything. Now the long, long wait begins for Civil War.

Also...

Anthony ; _ ;

Are the ants friendly or are there some "scary" scenes. I have a kid, you know.

I would have thought one scene involving a cute, cuddly lamb
being turned into goo during a failed experiment
would be distressing to young kids but the few in our audience didn't seem to react to that. It's way less that anything in a PG13 Nolan film.

I suppose the ants would be scary if you have a specific phobia towards ants since there are rather a lot of them.
one becomes a pet to Paul Rudd's kid at the end

they also say the word
shit- as in "I need you to steal some shit"
a few times if that's an issue for you.

My daughter just recently turned six. We were in my car at a drive-in, so I didn't go through the normal routine of stressing how important it is to be quiet so as to not disturb other people and if she is scared to not look and so on. She didn't have any issues with any of the ants or anything being 'scary' and laughed quite a bit. The ants aren't super-grotesque or anything, they just look like ants. And most of the scenes where they are fucking someone up, they are seen as just small insects. YMMV, of course, but without knowing your child's age or temperament, I would still think your child would probably be fine.

I liked pretty much everything about it. I liked that Yellowjacket was a bit (a lot) unhinged also, it makes him going after Scott's daughter make more sense. The early ant-man stuff was awesome and I'm shocked they showed us the original Wasp.

My two biggest surprises: Michael Pena was actually legitimately pretty funny in this and the score had some really cool moments that heightened the heist scenes.

End credit scene isn't completely obvious as I had to explain to my MCU movie buddy that the guy on the floor was actually Bucky. I did love the Ant-Man will return thing, though.

The macrovision stuff was really cool. I love that stuff.

Falcon fight was the best thing about this movie. Really liked how the universe worked its way into this movie.

My theory on the second ending scene:

Cap and Falcon weren't wearing their super suits so they weren't chasing Bucky. Bucky was in a vice thus I think he was trying to get rid of his arm.
I'd say Falcon is going to get Ant Man in to attempt to remove his arm.

Cross posting from the other Ant-Man thread.

I loved it. I didn't expect the villain to be great because Ant-Man doesn't have any great villains besides Ultron anyway. The back story and interactions between Pym/Lang/Hope were all great.

Ant-Man was one of the first super heroes I started reading when I got into comics so I just wanted a movie that did right by the character, and I think they really did.

Douglas did a great job with Pym, Rudd was a perfect Lang. They made the ants not seem completely goofy and actually useful. The sense of scale was great. The humor was great. The side characters were great. I loved how they even shrank so small they went to a different dimension.

Honestly it was everything I could have hoped for in an Ant-Man movie. I really hope it does well so that it gets a sequel, but it seems like there isn't very much buzz around it. Which sucks, because it was better then a bunch of the other Marvel movies.

If you don't count Guardians, this is probably Marvel's best origin movie to date. At the very least the best since Iron Man.

I wasn't clear on Cross' motivation

Why was he so mad at Hank? Just because he hid the suit?

They also referenced the particles affecting his brain. Is that supposed to be what drove him crazy?

Didn't they mention a guy who can climb walls AND a guy who can swing? Seems kinda weird, like wouldn't you just have one guy (that obviously being Spider-Man)? Glad to read here the final scene was from Civil War outright, it did feel like it was just plopped in there. Also cool that the quantum dimension is a tease for future stuff, I'm sure Dr Strange will be full of stuff like that.

I'd love a link to that final scene or a perfect transcription of what's said (same for the sorta Spidey tease). "The Accords" that Cap mentions I guess is the MCU registration act?

Seems like Pym and Cross had a father son relationship and he was still hurt about him lying to him and pushing him away. Then the particles made him start going insane which didn't help things.

To be fair, I WAS almost expecting him to use the love for his daughter to get back to the real world. The actual resolution came as a surprise of sorts.

Lol I was expecting something along the lines of "only love can save you" as well. The actual result was a sigh of relief

Heh, I just noticed that the trailers censor things. Like in the trailer they: "Need to steal some stuff." but in the movie they say: "Need to steal some shit."

They cut him saying, "that makes sense". I liked that joke from the trailer.

Man I thought this was gonna be total trash but I was pleasantly surprised. It was a really fun and funny ride. I was pretty surprised to see Edgar Wright's name all over the credits.

It did have some really awkward, forced pacing and exposition in parts but overall it was good. I love Paul Rudd.

Man I hope civil war doesnt suck as bad as the comics.

There was so much cool/fun scenes with shrinking.

Definitely seems like there is a ton of potential for a sequel.

I'd be more interested in a Ant-Man sequel than Hulk sequel at this point.

The night club scene was pretty impressive, good sense of scale and nice use of sound mixing there

The way Scott came back from the quantum world though was kinda bullshit, he just replaces the stabiliser or something like that with an anti-shrinking weapon (I think) and poof it works.. I don't know. Quantum world and especially going there was well done though. Was hoping a post credit scene about him going super big or mastering going in and out of the quantum world. New wasp was cool enough but a bit too obvious.

So erm, they could de-age Michael Douglas, age-up Haley Atwell, but they didn't bother to age-up Dominic Cooper and recast Howard Stark instead? Was he just unavailable for that cameo?

yeah that was weird
"oh hey that's roger sterling, cool cameo. Wait, where's stark ? Oh, that's him. ok."
I didn't remember it was also roger sterling playing papa stark in iron man movies

John Slattery played Howard Stark first, in Iron Man 2, at approximately that age.

Well Scott has been shown as being very resourceful, and we also see him tweaking the suit on his own. Wouldn't be surpised if he made some preparation after he hear Pym story.

Btw, anyone got villainous vibe from Hope when she start summoning ants and covering the lamp etc. And just a little bit qhen she said it's about damn time in the mid credit scene

Wait that was supposed to be Stark?

Yeah the opening scene is Pym leaving SHIELD. That's Carter and Stark, and the defense department guy who shows up later in the film.

One plot thing that bugged me, how did cops get tipped off when Cross invaded the house?

He probably went through the front door? He wasn't making it a secret. He wanted to draw Scott back out for revenge at that point.

The movie was fucking amazing. My favorite Marvel movie by far. The subatomic scene was very psychedelic.

Wait that was supposed to be Stark?

yup
a real playa

Movie was better than I had anticipated, up there with the top marvel movies. Despite treating it's villains the same way as usual, it was refreshing in comparison to Age of Ultron. Falcon fight was pretty cool, going subatomic was pretty neat. The civil war scene at the end was pretty stupid, but the new Wasp costume looked badass. The people sitting behind me were driving me to murder, but I was able to hold out.
