Anyone looking closely at the situation of COVID-19 in India? It's absolutely devastating

Official numbers say ~3,000 deaths per day but I'm pretty sure it's MUCH higher.

But I have people on Facebook telling me its all a conspiracy........
Must we do this in every covid related thread? We get it. You’re smart and some people are dumb. Congratulations. Let’s move on please.

What’s going on in India is sad but not at all surprising if you know anything about India. The only surprising thing is that it took this long to get like this.

Well it’s good you were here then. Otherwise who knows what would’ve happened. It’s like there is a wheelchair basketball game going on somewhere else and you need to tell us all how you dunked on them.

You saying the basketball team can actually walk? I'll get on it now

I’m wondering the same thing. Considering the living conditions and sheer number of people, it’s amazing this didn’t happen a year ago.

Yeah, possibly more transmissible variant:
‘Double mutant’ variant

The discovery of a new variant of Covid-19 in India has caused widespread concern and has been blamed as one of the main factors driving the wave of cases. The variant is known as B.1.617 and has two unusual mutations: E484Q and L425R. This so-called “double mutant” variant is believed to be more transmissible than previous strains. Although scientists are still not certain exactly how dangerous it is, the rapid spread of the variant through Maharashtra and then the rest of the country is key reason why the UK has banned travel from India.

This, with their general culture and housing situations over there I am very surprised they weren't neck and neck with us this whole time.

Current numbers in India. FWIW the problem isn't the raw numbers, it's how fast it's increasing. (That site makes it easier to see. I'd expect them to have a lot of cases with 1.3 billion people. The way it's growing is the problem.)

i dont know what to make of it, really defies all reason. I watched a video saying like 80% of indians are Vit D deficient due to their diet, usually being indoors, and skin pigmentation. But why is it happening now? The variants arent much more contagious. Maybe a problem with their vaccines? IIRC they have AZ and local one.

India did a good job shutting down for the first wave, but declared victory, went back to normal, and didn’t have a plan for the second and third waves.

Is it possible with many Western countries shutting down that traffic between India and the countries suffering the most back then was reduced to a level where a massive peak was delayed?

Also with a life expectancy of 69 years it's very possible that the main demographics who would have died from COVID are not around in large numbers. Could be that a new variant is killing younger people?

Regarding vaccines, it seems they have only vaccinated 1.7% of the country. A very, very, long way to go until the vaccine would have an impact.
I think India has more than 4 times the population of the USA?

Whatever way you look at it, it's worrying.

Well the help is pouring from other countries and many I know has got to 2nd vaccine (including my old folks).

No expert here but it should be get contained by August or something. They opened portal for 18+ vaccine registration, hotels are being repurposed as hospitals, but Private hospitals are only fixating on 45+ yo vaccinations as of right now.

Tech support age group got covid, recovered and now has gotten again. They'll be fine.

There's dark humour and then there's just being a dick...

If the vaccines are not helping with this new mutation, we're all fucked.

I'm allowed to make that joke, cause I'm living in a country that's following suit.

Plus I think we're like, responsible for one of the new mutations that's worrying everyone. Bonus points!

We must all the time people continue to insist covid isn't all that bad, and are engaged in denial of what is a clear, obvious and horrific reality.

Feels like History is repeating itself. The Flu killed around 15 million before, and I was hoping they would have learned from that Pandemic to protect themselves.

I think NATO should try and get involved and provide some additional support for the Hospitals.

I have some friends in India. Pretty much everyone has lost someone close to Covid already. Parents, cousins, friends. They say that the official death toll is bs, they are severely undercounting deaths.

They were also blaming Biden for not helping out with the vaccines. Clearly falling for the media narrative trying to shift blame from Modi. As if Biden is responsible for Indians.

The new mutation is apparently really bad. It cannot be detected by covid tests and while you do get symptoms, it kills people faster than the OG virus. At least according to anecdotal evidence ive heard from my friends. We better lockdown travel from India and any country that still hasnt banned travel from india. This thing is likely resistant to the vaccines.

This was bound to happen.
When you have an awful social system, nasty living conditions, incompetent leadership, and over 1B people living relatively close to each other, you tend to get more devastating disasters.

Lockdown and masks probably won't have as much of an effect. India needs to change it's ways of living.

How about we see some science regarding any of these Indian variants ability to resist the vaccines before we shit all over ourselves. I get that things are bad in India, but let’s follow the science, not get out in front of it.

The head of the German laboratory BioNTech said on Wednesday however that he is "confident" their COVID vaccine developed in collaboration with Pfizer is effective against the Indian variant.

Ugur Sahin told a virtual press conference that tests are underway but that "the Indian variant has mutations that we have already studied and against which our vaccine works, which makes us confident."
