I got the iPhone 12, but had to transition to iPhone 12 Pro Max (for the significantly better battery life).... Might go naked this time around.

Indeed, these things are $1,000 machines that everyone just pretends are reasonable because you accept shitty subsidized plans from carriers.
The whole ecosystem is a joke... and I'm an iPhone user (although my phone is about 5 years old now and I never upgrade until it completely fails, screw this forced obsolescence when Apple hasn't shown a clever feature idea in a decade).

I'm going the opposite way, each new phone I get seems to be getting cheaper and cheaper as I realise I only really use my phone for phone calls, messaging, YouTube and some photos.

One reason I'm torn about my next upgrade is that I generally prefer iOS over Android, but I find it hard to support Apple now. Face-unlock was the feature that put me over the edge into no-buy territory. I'm on a SE model that still uses the thumb, and the only one I'll even consider upgrading to is the latest SE, face-unlocks are a no-go for me. They turned a perfect feature (thumb unlock you can do even without looking down) into a shitty one.

idk, gaming on ipad is kinda cumbersome, at $1100 (if no hike) + a controller, it doesn't sound that appealing to get for gaming only, but if you were gonna get an ipad pro regardless...

iPads have always been awful for gaming, and we tried over and over. No matter how many times another shiny iPad comes into our house for work, and the kids jump onto the app store thinking the power will lead to gaming experiences, the reality of the App Store rears its head again and you realize it's all trash all the way down.

Pretty much everyone is locked into the world where iMessage is the only way anyone communicates. I can't tell you how many times I've heard people get irritated that someone is using an Android and wants to join a group message, people will do anything to avoid it.
