As a consumer, I like Nintendo's policy to maintain games' prices

sure it is

Sure and because of this I don't usually by indie games. They're usually terrible. You ever notice that most indie games are sub 60. I wonder why.

Whether or not I choose to pay 60$ for a game or not, depends solely on my perception of, and desire for, the title. Retailers will lower the price eventually.

Nintendo fans are crazy. Like say what you will about Xbox and sony fans being children over console wars. Nintendo fans take crazy to a whole new level

Good job on generalizing all three segments.

I'm somewhat cynical. Please produce a list of all Nintendo games that increased in value after purchase

I'm sure someone will build you a small list because it is true for some games.
That list of course would be dwarfed by the Nintendo titles, that like most mass-produced goods, dropped in value.

I don't want to jump in the rabbit hole of this thread, but some of Nintendo's pricing is...weird. My target still has a small selection of new DS games, including Super Mario 64 DS, sold for the same price I bought it for on the day the DS came out 12 years ago. Other games get clearance rack'd at target, but this 12 year old DS launch title costs more than some xb1/PS4 titles that they stock.

Although someone is gonna post one of those Nintendo annual sale things showing that people are still buying that game.

Also HGSS eBay price inflation is weird. Why does Nintendo still have SM64DS on shelves but not a Pokémon game from 2010 though?

Also also I'm disappointed that no one in here is bringing up the "Nintendo games have legs" argument lol

I absolutely dislike Nintendo price policy, and this includes eshop. Any physical game is cheaper through amazon than its digital counterpart most of time. For me, Nintendo price policy is a part of the whole "we live in our bubble" Nintendo issue.

Solid example: pokémon sun bought for 32 euros on Amazon vs 45 on eshop.

How am I trolling? This is how I operate when I make my purchases. Am I not allowed to have an opinion without it being deemed as trolling? This is a discussion forum.

It's not as funny when it's not subtle.
But you did last a while. ::tips hat::

With Nintendo's pricing structure and artificial product scarcity I am more likely to purchase their system and software at retail day 1 as opposed to the other two console manufacturers. Honestly it's smart of them to keep their prices like this as it retains the value of the brand. I know that when I invest into the Nintendo ecosystem I can resell my items at later date and make back most of my money.

This became a honeypot for other Nintendo fans as well.

At least this troll topic brought some humor.

It's not trolling. It's srs bsns. MUch like how I buy one game to play and game sealed in the hopes that this random Zelda:Twilight Princess Wii U edition will become worth something. Srs bsns

Eh, I don't mind pay at full price (or almost) Nintendo physical games, at least them are the only ones I can play it without download patchs (*) or installing them to a hard drive. Still, I recognize there is a problem in the eShop, unless the game is limited or impossible to find I only buy VC games, indies or games with fantastic deals.

(*) Sure some exceptional case happened, but I don't remember any at the moment.

But if Nintendo games went on sale and dropped in price like other games, you wouldn't need to sell 3 games to afford 2 new ones.

It's fine to just say you don't mind paying a higher price down the line. You don't need to try and spin it to justify it.
Don't bother with him, dude.

Game prices lower to increase demand. Unless it's Smash or Mario Kart, you're telling me every Nintendo game has enough legs to not ever lower the price?

I love how games will become out of print before they ever drop in price. Like Lego City Undercover before it was actually reissued or Bravely Default.

Man when i saw that Federation Force and Starfox Zero were 50-60 dollars! It just made me forever cement my feeling on how behind the times Nintendo is at pricing games. Other things as well but the pricing is such a big F YOU to the consumers. Now we are actually having people defending this!?

More pubs and retailers should try to keep games at a premium price like Nintendo does. That's how I know the games are good

Awww shit! These games I bought during the Steam sale for so cheap...it's because they're all junk!! Wish I dropped $60 on Star Fox Zero instead.

It's nice being able to buy a game you're looking forward to day 1 without worrying that it might see a significant price drop in the near future.

The opposite of wanting a game badly but deciding to hold off purely for economical reasons (aka wait for Steam sale) is a much worse situation to be in and I know this from experience.

You basically pay extra for the privilege of playing the game early and with Nintendo that extra 'fee' is either zero or small.

It just dawned on me that Nintendo has to keep their prices high to give all of the other publishers a chance to sell their games.

I don't understand how they are behind the times on this issue. Maybe they see value in their games. Nintendo as a company sees themselves occupying a certain niche and that affords them the opportunity to price their products at a premium versus the other two where their software are far more homogenized

well yes that's kind of my point. How would one go about choosing certain Nintendo games for an investment? if its like 1/100 or less that's pretty bad odds unless they all have something in common that an investor could look for.

I mean OP did say investment didn't he?

I do like that the games retain more of their market value compared to the games that costs like 1/6th of their initial pricing a year after release.
However I don't like their agressive high pricing for consoles, the pricecuts just a few months on the 2 recent ones makes sure the Switch is not a day1 purchase for sure. Better have a decent entrypoint with the consoles early instead of milking the sales looong after the release.

Well you see it's like this. 3rd Parties are pretty much non-existant on nintendo platforms so they can get away with keeping the price high due to the lack of competition. Plain and simple economics son.

I agree with OP. There are obviously exceptions - but I've bought quite a few first party Nintendo titles at launch that I was on the fence about, played a few hours decided they weren't for me and sold them a few weeks later for a $5-$10 loss. I wouldn't normally risk the purchase if I think there is a chance of it being 50% off shortly after launch date.

If you think about Federation Force retailing for $40 at 7 years of development...that's like $5.71 for every year of development!

As much as I love Nintendo games, they are the most ANTI-CONSUMER company out of the Big Three in gaming.

This is not even a good investment.

GBA games can be sold at higher prices because many people did not take care of their cardboard boxes, sadly. This is why you often have deals selling cardboard boxes alone:(

If you try to get LTTP on GBA with a cardboard box, price will be three times higher than for Spirit Tracks with a DS Box.

i sold a sealed copy of Fire emblem path of radiance for $250 earlier this year and a copy of radiant dawn for $120 :)

But it was random right? right?

Of course not every game is going to be worth a lot but it's hardly random when it comes to Nintendo and a franchise with a dedicated following like FE. Some games are just no-brainers to buy but I guess it's stupid to think like that :/

You're deluding yourself into thinking higher prices are better for you and calling video games an investment (they aren't), possibly due to an irrational love of Nintendo.

The prices are only higher on used games.

He buys games new. Hes not "deluding" himself in any way. He enjoys that they retain their value better

All yall can get out of here with the point above its fucking nonsense. Posts like this make me hate gaf

Good lord I thought the defenders of paying online was the worst Stockholm syndrome case I would see in gamers.

On man OP proved how wrong I was.

You know what's better OP? Waiting a couple of months after release and buying games for, sometimes, more than 50% off.

You do realise why this is? Because Nintendo ship limited amounts of copies of their games to begin with creating a fake scarcity, plus the fact it's for the Gamecube that was technically a failure. But yeh obviously Nintendo are doing something right some idiot is paying that much for a game.

Or, more accurately, with Nintendo you are always charged the extra fee to play early, with no option to wait. You're basically arguing that you'd rather pay more always to assuage your fear/guilt over missing out on some future discount.

Probably best just to make peace with the idea that sometimes you pay more to get things sooner, and that's fine. A lot of things work that way.

60 dollar games are good for industry. What's good for Nintendo is good for industry. However OP wants to rationalize that is his choice but I don't think premium priced games are a bad thing for this industry at all. More pubs and retailers should try to keep games at a premium price like Nintendo does. That's how I know the games are good

I don't even know where to start with something like this.

How is that a fake scarcity? The game is long out of print, what is out there is what's out there.
