Asian-GAF: We're all the same, like Stormtroopers |OT| |AT|

What I find disconcerting is that people talk about cutting in lines rude, but they completely ignore the other fact about driving in Asia (i.e. not exclusive to any country).

2 lanes turn into 3 lanes.

Traffic signals ignored especially during early mornings or late nights.

Cars cutting in and out.

Cars going in the other direct despite signs saying one-way only.

Double standards?

I'm going to bitch about the hypocrisy of GAF OT for one moment here.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=156646915&postcount=29

Just replace race with language.

That whole thread is full of people (I think rightfully upset).

But, compared to the "2 girls 1 boyfriend river" thread recently?

Holy shit.

The double standard annoys me almost as much as the actual racism.

k I'm over it. I swear. I promise. For the next week anyhow. To be fair, I have a really good life since that's probably the worst thing to happen to me all week, hahaha :p

How is everyone else doing?

Bat- I'm jealous. I can't stand roller coasters.. no Six Flags for me. But when I go to Disney I'll post a picture :D

As I was telling one of my asian (half caucasian half japanese) friends like 20 minutes ago; it's "OK" to be racist towards Asians for some screwed up reason. It feels like because we are (generally speaking) well off; it's ok to be racist. :(

I feel so bad for you bunny. The missus and I went to Cedar Point last summer...and it was amazing. So many roller coasters. I'm terrified of heights, sooo I was losing it but it was aaawesome.

I swing by here every once in a while to look at the food porn, but this caught my eye.

Let me ask you a question: how are you accusing OT as a whole of hypocrisy on racism when you've been talking about "PC SJWs" lately, and after your behavior in the Tamir Rice thread last year where you refused to watch the evidence footage for yourself but still felt like you had to talk about the situation?

Were the people in that river thread who were chuckling at the terrible translation of the original article also the people active in other race threads? All of them?

You go hard for your own people, which you should especially on Gaf where people do like to cut on Asians with seeming impunity, but you also need to think about how you look in other threads. When we had the thread about "oriental" as a descriptor for people a while back, a lot of us were going hard trying to get across why it's messed up to others. We try to get other people's backs.

I wish a lot of the other posters in here would be more vocal about things affecting the various Asian communities too, because you're generally more calm than we tend to be which makes it easier to reach more people.

I apologize for the disturbance.

I'm about to head to my cousins house just to game all night. xP Other than that, nothing but a great week!

Aww, well that sucks. I always feel for those who can't take the thrill. :c I actually got my friend on rollercoasters for the first time that day.

Ooooh, I can't wait for that picture! :) Always wanted to go!!

I mean, can I get anybody who is lurking in this thread who is not Chinese to tell me that Chinese people are generally really nice people, is it really that hard?

I can. I spent 14 days in China in 2012 and had a wonderful time. Stayed in a small town outside of Guangzhou and got to see Shenzen, Guilin, and Foshan. We were supposed to go to Hainan but ran out of time. I'm white canadian and went with a coworker to visit her family. Everyone was super nice and there were many party invitations and free drinks. Would go back in a heartbeat.

I'm more of a lurker here on GAF, but still pretty pleased to have stumbled upon this community thread. :)

My Chinese girlfriend calls me a "banana"...yellow on the outside, white on the inside. Fair enough, given that I grew up in white suburbia. Didn't even have any Asian friends until I was in college, lol.

Apparently, my parents were fairly atypical, culture-wise, in raising me...they could not have been more chill (also helps that I'm the youngest of their 3 kids, with 6 and 8 year age gap from my older siblings). I was a bit of a hellspawn, too...caused a ton of trouble and constantly got detentions at school. Still raked in the A's though, so I guess that got me off the hook. :p

Anyway, after college, I've been having a lot more exposure to Asian folk, and it's been a pretty eye-opening experience just how little of that culture I'm actually familiar with. My gf constantly teases me about not knowing common Chinese dishes, Chinese New Year traditions, Asian pop culture, etc. I watch football, love American food, and my favorite holiday is the 4th of July...most can tell I'm very much American-ized within a minute of conversing, lol. Still much for me to learn it seems...

Don't worry too much about trying to be more Chinese or anything... Learn, and be okay with that. Everyone deals with reconciling two different cultures differently, so I don't think you're as atypical as you think.

Oh yeah, I agree. Didn't mean to come off as having a sudden identity crisis or anything. I'm pretty comfortable in my own skin...it's just been an interesting experience lately learning more about the culture. I live near Chinatown and Flushing now, and those places are a real trip. That's a whole-lotta Chinese people, holy moly. I've been having a blast trying out the different dim sum restaurants and diving around northern chinese breakfast joints. It's just very obvious I'm more of an outsider there than a native like my Chinese and Chinese-American friends.

If you like Italian food - hit up the Hill. If you want a dessert; hit up Ted Drewe's (Ice Cream). Ted Drewe's is the quintessential STL thing, along with STL Pizza and The Hill (italian)

Hi AsianGAF... I'm feeling rather down right now because a driver I rear-ended two years ago filed a claim against me. What happened was I had left work late afternoon and was feeling tired, and didn't notice that the car in front had stopped shortly after passing a greenlit intersection. I rear-ended his company car and we both reported it to the collision centre, since it wasn't his. I did not see any visible scratches on the car, though mine had a scratch on the bumper. The claim says that he has sustained shoulder and spinal injuries, that he suffered emotional damage and he can't perform household work as well as before. It also says he suffered a loss of income because of his injuries.

The problem is that he was perfectly fine when he stepped out of his car at the time and did not call for an ambulance. He had a family in his car though they were also fine. I don't have witnesses for myself. I'm sure these injuries are either unrelated to the incident or grossly exaggerated, but I don't know what I can really do. I've contacted my insurance company about this, and now I'm just waiting to see what happens next.

I'm just frustrated a minor case that, while undeniably my fault, is turning into a huge inconvenience. Really upset that my first time in court is because of a rear-ending that didn't even leave a scratch on his own car. Has anyone had any experience for something like this?

I have a friend that's a lawyer do I'll ask him about it. I am pretty down myself. Just broke up with the gf but I'll post more details later on. Meeting a friend at a bar.

Hey, yeah, sorry to hear that. I experienced pretty much the same exact thing when I first started driving actually. The guy came back with similar claims...emotional distress, inability to go back to work, etc., despite it being a minor incident. He also tried dumping other damages to his car that happened later on me as well. I lawyered up and basically my guy took care of it and got all that BS tossed out. My insurance went up a bit for awhile for bumping into the guy, but that was the end of it, fortunately.

If his claims are bogus, then don't worry...I think your lawyer will have it covered. They seem to deal with this nonsense quite a bit. It's just pretty annoying and inconvenient to deal with, but hey, just consider it a lesson to be more careful on the road next time. I guess it's better for the guy to pretend being injured than actually turn out to be really injured.

(I laughed a little at your no Asian friends til college. I was totally opposite... no nonAsian friends til college.)

Haha, yeah...that seems to be the case for most Asians I know. Outside of my family, I barely even saw other Asian people around in my community as a kid.

lol, but her parents did call me the twinkie version though. :p

Utilize your insurance company--that's what they're there for.

Sometimes it's even against your agreement to pursue things in court.

^ Thanks, I definitely will...Hopefully it's not too much trouble.

Thanks for the reassurance... Was standing in court hard for you? I have slight anxiety issues and this is really shaking me up. I haven't stopped thinking about it the past few hours and feel really down. Ugh I feel bad because my dad has to go through trouble too since it's his car...

I'm just a bit of a mess right now.

I'm just a bit of a mess right now.

Never even had to physically go to court. I went to a deposition and that was it.

I know it's kind of a shock to the system right now and you're feeling down in the dumps...sorry you're going through this. It's a pain in the butt, but it'll eventually ride itself out.

However, if the insurance company refuses to back you up and cover you, I would get a lawyer. I wouldn't recommend not getting one if they are really going all out on you, but you could also request documentations (doctor's visits/notes, psychologist's evaluation, basically, proof that it's this severe.)

Someone rear ended my car once in traffic because he wasn't paying attention (his words), and yes, I was kinda sore the next day even though it was such a little hit at the time, so it's not unlikely that the pains came the day after, but it does sound like they're just trying to get money.

Sorry you had to meet such a greedy motherfucker. We all make mistakes, but his reaction isn't proportionate to the crime.

Thanks for your concern. I know it must have sucked for him, and I really was sorry I wasn't more awake that day. I think my insurance company will back me up (I'd be bummed if they didn't since we're paying for insurance for protection, after all...). I will most definitely take your advice to heart in case they don't.

Yeah everything is ok. I'm a little disappointed by the breakup but not distraught over it. Basically, after 6 months of dating, I wanted something more serious but she didn't, so I called it quits. I'll hopefully bounce back soon.

morning aznGAF!

why is it monday already ;___;

mushroomy, welcome :D

missD, aww that sux!!! man i hate when people are scummy like that >:O a mom rearended my car recently and she was so flustered with the kids in her car throwing the worst tantrum and trying to apologise to me and everything. but i saw my car was not even scratched so i didnt even grab her details off her. i hope it wont drag on for too long, MissD. That must be so stressful for you. Im glad to hear your insurance company will back you up. Let us know how things go or if you'd like to vent further or whatever

y2, breakups are hard. :< but sounds like you parted just before it gets too deep so hope you will bounce back soon <3

ugh you guys, i had sesame balls as dessert after dim sum on the weekend, and gosh that taste of warm gooey bean paste inside the sesame ball *_____*

Maybe this is the wrong place but anyone have green tea recommendations? I want something loose that uses the actual leaves but other than that I'm all ears.

If your local Costco sells the Kirkland Ito En green tea packs, then get those.

Otherwise, you can always buy Ito En from the bottle at Asian marts although it's kind of expensive

Bagless green tea? Maybe someone here will have suggestions. There are a ton in Taiwan, but I don't know how to order them.

lol, nice. My favorite dim sum dessert is that bun with the warm gooey egg yolk inside. Not sure what it's called...had my first one just a couple years ago. I remember burning my tongue that time because I just bit into it, not expecting there to be scalding-hot lava inside. :)

I went to this Japanese marketplace over the weekend called Mitsuwa. They had some Kyoto festival event, where they imported artisans, crafts, baked goods, etc. I ate a green tea dango (dough balls on a stick, covered in green tea syrup)...it was kinda gross. I ended up enjoying the regular, non-festival related stuff much more...black sesame softserve ice cream, taiyaki (fish-shaped pastries filled with red bean), and ramen (which had a super long line, yikes).

The store was pretty neat...had a bunch of sake, Japanese beers, treats, etc. Picked up some red bean ice cream mochi, which is as fantastic as it sounds.

So Asian gaf. Its that time of the year where us Chinese visit the cemetery to pay our respects. I went last year with my family.

One of the Chinese families at the cemetery forgot to make sure their bucket of burnt paper was out of embers before dumping the contents in the trash bin. There's one or two trash bins on fire every year. I feel bad for the people who work at the cemetery.

I got into a minor disagreement with my mom since she wants me to learn how do this every year since my elders are getting too old. I told her I don't really care to pay respects to someone who died 26 years before I was born.

All good, I only attend for the roast pig and food anyway.

I just went yesterday. There was still a bunch of snow on the ground so it made getting to some of the graves a little annoying.

Have to go to NY for this next weekend.

We'll oh, and Cali-GAF, I'll be in LA Tuesday Morning and leaving Thursday Morning if we don't stop by vegas, If we do probably Monday night to Thursday morn?

I guess I've been lucky that my parents never really pushed their culture and traditions on me. Even still, I try to be respectful when I choose not to partake in certain things. I'm not big on the grave-honoring tradition, so I basically let them know that I honor them in my own way...I show my appreciation by not taking what I have for granted, to know that my successes are built on the sacrifices and hard-work of previous generations. Even those I haven't even met before, I believe I honor them by being a good person, somebody they'd be proud of, and maximizing the opportunities made possible by their efforts.

Ooh I love that stuff. Nai Wong Bao (milk yolk bun).
Yep! That's the ticket! I only had the top version...will keep an eye out for the other one. :D

I LOVE THAT STUFF. It's sweet, right? I had some from this place in SF once and I will never forget it, it was like eating ambrosia.
Sweet, but not overpoweringly so...it's definitely got an "egg-yolk-y" taste to it. That's been my dim sum go-to for dessert ever since!

I'm not a big green tea drinker myself, but my girlfriend and her parents are all about the jasmine pearl green tea. It's pretty awesome. They come as they little leaf balls that unravel into leaves once you pour hot water on it.

I think there's a Tea OT. I just drink whatever my parents buy for me.. it comes in pearls/rolled form. I can't read the labels. D:

the crazy asian landlord stereotype. is that a thing?

i saw it in action. live, in front of me. he was yelling into his phone, telling his tenant or somebody who needs to move her car because it's garbage day. his command of the english language is, of course, barely serviceable. but it was loud and kept reiterating on the same point over and over. hey, it's his place and he needs things done.

i was at a dinner with the guy. and of course, lots of food and hella leftovers.

c'mon, who here _isn't_ connected to a family member or family friend that isn't renting out property on the side to make money?

My mom got screwed as a landlord. Her tenants turned her house into a marijuana grow op. The whole house had to be gutted, and the interior had to be almost completely rebuilt. Homeowner's insurance was a massive bitch for her to deal with, too; they tried to low ball her with a $75k payout for a $1+ million house.

I understand why some people have an interest or want to visit it once (even though I don't), but the "well all these other countries do awful crap too" will always annoy me in the same way "there are children starving in Africa" replies do.

Yeah...

TBH North Korea and Mexico are two countries I probably won't visit anytime soon, as well as most of the Middle East and Africa, especially upper and middle.

Canada seems like a nice place. Safe :p. I'm a LITTLE wary of some part of Europe, but mostly for the people that prey on tourists, and not so much the danger of the living zones.

Canada is pretty cool. I've been there once, but I've been to Niagara Falls a few times.

I actually think it would be incredibly interesting to visit North Korea as it is right now. Not for any chance at seeing the horrors the state inflicts upon its citizens -- that would never be allowed to happen -- but because the entire experience would be state-controlled propaganda. A pantomime of modern society so far removed from reality that it satirizes itself.

I'm sure one could get the same experience visiting another dictatorial regime that also happened to want to show the outside world that everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here now, thank you. How are you? But I don't know of any tour groups organizing trips through Gaddafi's Syria or Mugabe's Zimbabwe, and North Korea's particular brand of eagerness to be important shows through in its theater.

All that said, I'd really rather not contribute money directly to the government for the week-long show, surreal it may be.

maybe return to Hong Kong. This time, as an adult and not with my parents lol
