Assassin’s Creed IV on PS4/XB1/PC: Ubisoft details the next-gen differences

I don't even care if the story is rubbish. It looks like an awesome pirate simulator and I will pay for that alone.

Next gen! Excite!

Conflicted on what version I'm going to go for. Got a PC that could run it well plus it'll be the cheaper version, but after how dodgy the AC3 port was, not sure if I should just grab it with my PS4. Really need some comparison articles to come out.

AC III is likely the worst AAA game I have ever played. It has turned me off of this franchise and ubisoft in general. And I am usually not that harsh.

Damn, i was actually impressed with that video.

But then again its ubisoft......"don't believe their lies."

(I would of photoshoped the photo from memento but im on my phone)

I'm planning ahead for SLI Maxwells and hopefully ASUS' new 31.5" 4K monitor will drop at least $500 by then. The damn thing is $3500... which is still pretty cheap for a 4K monitor that does 60HZ, but still a tad bit too pricey for me. Ideally I'd want it to be $2500.

On another note. Are most higher end multiplats coming with 4K assets even though consoles can't run it at that resolution or is this like a rare one-off thing that NVIDIA money hatted for PCs?
I'm not sure why "4k assets" would be reserved for those resolutions. The quality of the assets is completely independent from the resolution and one would experience benefits regardless.

The only thing that could be considered a waste would be higher resolution HUD elements.

Holy shit that looks amazing. If they can fix the shitty campaign then this game really has potential

You've played the campaign???

30 fps is a huge step up over AC3 on PS3 if it's constant. I said I wasn't going to pay full price for an Assassin's Creed game again, but damn.

Could someone who knows tell me if they completely ditched the real-world pretense like in the Vita game, just barely making mention to the fact that you're in a program? Don't think I can stomach another terrible Desmond type slog.

I bought AC1 used and played through like 2 assassinations before getting bored and never touching it again. I played a little of Assassin's Creed 2 and it was a little better but it still couldn't hold my attention. I skipped all the other games until AC3 which I got for free with a graphics card purchase. I played through the first part until they introduced chasing Ben Franklin or somebody's lost diary pages and I stopped playing that crap. I had officially swore of AC games but the pirate theme had me intrigued and some of the gameplay videos made me really wish they would have just made a straight up pirate game.

This last video just made me buy this game. With the pirate theme, open world, and sweet ass vegetation and weather tech, it's like Ubisoft are tickling all my gaming spots. I'll most likely ignore the Assassins/Templar story bullshit because honestly I don't even know what the story is about at this point and just play this as a pirate simulator in my mind. My GTX 680 is a saucy wench and awaits plundering booty and sailing around the Caribbean even if all the other surrounding stuff is crap I'll have a great time doing just that.

You can see more detail the higher the rendering resolution, thus the texture resolution should be higher. They go hand in hand.

Gah, I've bought every AC game (afaik!) but never got more than, say, 20% in. But, I'm doing it again. This one looks fantastic and the only reason I hadn't paid it any attention was because I didn't realise it was launching so soon.

Off to research a little more.

I loved Ass Creed 2 but I still have to play Brotherhood. I will probably play this after Brotherhood so I have a long time to wait and see if it will be acceptable to play on PS3. I am assuming it probably will be.

Didn't really like the direction the series took with revelations and brotherhood. Training assassins etc. I thought these were going to be interlude spinoffs with a return to form with III.

Not to be the case. AC is dead to me now. I don't like the whole pirate assassin thing either. Whoever heard of a stealthy pirate?

Watch dogs is more appealable to me than this.

I originally was going to let this one pass me buy since it is 60% sea and after not necessarily a bad game, but a disappointing AC3 for me, given that its era was my favorite. After the hype though, pending reviews it looks like this is a day 1 purchase for me, looks technically v good. Look forward to seeing their full-Next Gen AC4

I think you got that mixed around, the missions are 60% land, 40% ocean.

This! Do you want to walk around some trashed city listening to people curse at each other or do you want to explore the depths of the oceans and lush jungles looking for treasure and lost cities!
leaning towards AC4 cause I might get burned out by a city setting after GTAV.

I really liked AC3 and never really got the hate it gets on gaf, and only gaf, Anybody I've talked to in real life thought it was a refreshing and unique experience being able to play as a Native American during colonial America, and that running through trees was fucking awesome, as well as being in colonial Boston and New York. Little issues like not being able to 100% sync every mission, or the fact that a small bug will pop up every now and then doesn't effect their experience very much at all. Is it perfect? Of course not, but the way gaf describes AC3 you would think it personally bitch slapped their mother and slept with their girlfriend. Some people just let the smallest things ruin their enjoyment in a game. "Ahh WTF can't I 100% sync this mission" or "goddammint how the fuck am I supposed to craft", or worse of all "gahh why am I 5 hours in and still not able to play the guy on the box" and so on and so forth.

I just don't know if it's just short attention span or ADD but people seem to just want everything at a blazingly fast paced. I enjoyed the 30+ minute boat ride to America that really does a good job to put in perspective how crazy and dreadful a journey like that really was. I loved spending time with Haytham and having that flesh out the characters and motives. Playing as Connor as a child was awesome and seeing character progression from a child to an adult is something we don't get enough of in games. I loved AC3 for just it's attention to detail for recreating such an impressive setting and really making you feel like a part of that history. Walking through colonial Boston and New York is a surreal experience and embodies what I love about this series, the authenticity and attention to detail that many people on gaf just either don't care about or not recognize.

I also never understood the criticism of Connor not being developed enough. He most definitely had an arc and by the end of that game is very much a different character with a new perspective and set of ideals. And ya, Connor can come off as being a bit of a dick, but so are the people who are around him. His conversation with Sam Adams where he calls him out for being a hypocrite by owning slaves, yet fighting for freedom and liberty says all about the people he's in contact with. Their greedy, privileged, and rich people who could give two shits about what happens to Native Americans, or common people. It would have been easy to just paint this romanticized and glorified picture of America during the revolutionary war that's common in fiction and culture, but they centered it on a Native American and made it a more personal and believable story which I respected. I think people just wanted another happy go lucky, flamboyant, and loveable personality that is Ezio, but Connor is a character that grew up in a completely different environment than that of Ezio so it's natural he's not going to be that guy. Ezio embodies an archetype of an idolized Renaissance lifestyle, while Connor is a much more believable character. I love them both, but Connor doesn't have to be the super loveable likeable guy that is Ezio to still be just as great a character.

So ya I guess I just have a different outlook on AC3. I never gave a fuck about the modern day stuff so that part of the game's storyline never bothered me, and I never ran into any major bugs that so many people claim ruined their experience.

It's one of the worst games I've ever played in my 20+ years of gaming. It's really that god awful on every level if you play it on 360/ps3.
Nonsense. You probably only played awesome games to put AC3 in this level.

Of course I respect your opinion but AC3 is far from that. It's a great game with lots of flaws (pacing, some bugs, worst main character of the series), but still an enjoyable ride especially if you are a fan of the series.

stealth sucked, 100% stuff sucked as mentioned. none of the extra systems mattered because well... i beat the game with the starting weapons, so i didn't really spend money on anything.

They give you a lot of stuff to do, issue is i found barely any of it fun.

But i come to AC mostly for climbing shit, which is barely in 3. The new combat system also wasn't as fun as brotherhood/revelation imo.

It's criminal that AC still hasn't got even the most basic stealth moves implemented. I mean of all the games out there how does a game about a goddamn assassin not have this shit?

I have no clue. I honestly thought after ACII and the spin-off games they would implement a full cover/prone system in a mainline yet all they did was put in a broken "lean" mechanic. If I could email a Ubi game director about this, I would. Prone, crouch and snap-on cover NEED to be in future games, Ubi can go on about how next-gen was the focus but they should take some serious looks at the mechanics if upgrading is their thing. Stuff like moving bodies, non-lethal takedowns and more varied enemy pursuits would all be welcome additions.

I plan on getting AC4 at some point despite AC3 being a huge let-down, especially in the Connor department. I mean no offense to his voice actor, but to put it plainly, he was monotone as hell. It'll have the token Ubi open-world formula but at the right deal I'll pick it up.
